Maddolis All you can ask of any chess champ is that he be dominant in his era. That's all. Was Fischer dominant in his era? Yes, as was Morphy, Capa, Lasker, Alekhine. As for comparing across generations, I look for hunger for and devotion to chess. I rate Fischer higher on those than Carlsen, who was border line autistic looking for a mental distraction, basically, I sense.
@Maddolis
@Maddolis 9 жыл бұрын
Perhaps for now, but only because Carlsen will have to remain dominant for another few years to prove to others he can stay up at that level. Fischer wasn't around for ages anyway (like Morphy). No doubt one of the greatest, but I think Fischer has a lot of of nationalist supporters, and wouldn't be quite as highly regarded if he wasn't American. Still one of the very greatest, but people would be less vocal about it.

Do Norwegians usually speak English that well at 13? In France, kids start taking English classes around 10 or so, but they can't carry on a conversation until well into high school.
@Brukernavnn
@Brukernavnn 9 жыл бұрын
dookdawg214 Yeah, my nephew is 10 and he already speaks okay basic conversational English. The internet probably helps a lot because we're exposed to English all the time here.
@kimaboe
@kimaboe 9 жыл бұрын
dookdawg214 Yes, it is perfectly normal. In Norway kids start learning English in the second or third grade (age 7-8) and have a *lot* of classes for the first few years, and while gradually you have fewer dedicated English classes they do continue throughout upper secondary-school (until the age of 18 or 19). And since we don't dub television show besides those for toddlers, kids these days develop a very solid vocabulary early on. Magnus had an extra advantage since his family lived abroad for a while when he was a kid and also travelled a lot when he was working toward his grandmaster title. Still, I'd say that in spite of his international lifestyle and social circle, today he has a heavier accent than most Norwegians his age.

@@JavierGarcia-sd9tj It is very important to actually use the language, not just "learn" it. In Norway, we have German classes (some also offer French or Spanish) in school from grade 8 through 10, but almost no one could carry on a basic conversation a few years later. Basically, unless you get to use it regularly, it disappears quickly again, and there is almost no reason for the average 15-16 year old to speak German in Norway, so it is lost completely within a couple of years.
