Rules exist and he violated a rule. Fines exist for rules violation. He was fined. He agreed to the fine and agreed to wear proper attire the next day. What more do you want?
@AnoNymous-mv4mjКүн бұрын
Magnus is neither right nor wrong, he's free. A personal choice isn't a falsifiable statement that can be proven or disproven, it's not a chess move that can be evaluated by an engine. When a couple divorces, their friends don't necessarily have to take one side.
@AnoNymous-mv4mjКүн бұрын
@@hairtoss7975 The rules did mention that the player needs to change after the fine. They also enforced it for Nepo on the same day, they would have looked silly if they didn't enforce if for Magnus.
@sylvariatzakaКүн бұрын
I think everyone knew the rules beforehand and Magnus chose to not follow them. IMO he should have declined the event entirely if this was his plan. Childish IMO. And the profanity as he leaves is extra-immature. I heard that FIDE was accommodating his family in extra ways. What a nice way to repay them for the gesture...

I think the real question is why Magnus thinks the rules that everyone else is following, shouldn't apply to him. If he isn't prepared to follow FiDE rules, why sign up to FIDE tournaments? I think he's been to enough tournaments by now to know what the dress code is.
@baskoning9896Күн бұрын
The real question is: why does it matter what pants you have on to play chess.
@MrFootofDavrosКүн бұрын
Exactly. The rules have been in place for years for the top tier events. And that includes the recent Chess Olympiad, featuring hundreds of players - INCLUDING MAGNUS - where every single player managed to take part without wearing jeans! The guy - a supposed Champion to look up to - is a joke...
@sylvariatzakaКүн бұрын
Agreed. And then he acts like it's a surprise when they enforce it. And then goes as far to use profanity and quit the tourny. Very immature IMO. Hasn't a lot of chess drama the past few years been because of Magnus and his temper tantrums?
@gaspi91Күн бұрын
But the rhing is that FIDE is the organization that does this types of tournaments which we all watch and use for ranking. You can't be a chess player and not participate in fide events. Magnus did withdraw from candidates, opted out of defending his championship... I mean your comment is wrong on many levels.
@masyan3457Күн бұрын
You guys might look this at different angle. Why fide not strictly said jeans is not allowed? They said something like "not business attire" like wtf? Then why not said the punishment is disqualified? They literally fined Magnus and he accepted to pay and will wear something else the next day.

What twaddle is 8:31 Rook f to c8?
@inazuma-fulgurКүн бұрын
2:57 this does read indeed like Fide thinks nothing is a threat until you say "I'm threatening you with this" I mean, does Fide own chess? Did they invent it? Why do they get to decide what is a world championship and what isn't? Do they own the term? If so, is chess 960 really the same game as chess? Imo debatable, if they wanna make any claims they need to host a proper classical chess championship for 960 themselves, but even then their claims of exclusivety would probably hold no water. Next I'm gonna hold a world chess championship in my backyard, stream it and watch them get real maddddd Seems pretty full of themselves
@ahumanmerelybeing9 сағат бұрын
Agree, it seems pretty nuts to say that nobody but them is allowed to have a world championship for a chess variant that they don't even hold competitions for.

The game was high quality. The humour was spot on as ever. As for the wrong trousers. I am disappointed. Here in Norway the Christmas chess is on national TV and has been very popular. I was really looking forwards to seeing it. Won’t be the same without him. The rules are the same for everybody. This does not change the fact that FIDE were petty. I 100% support Magnus in his decision. FIDE doesn’t own chess, the organisation is corrupt and they only took over the world championships because Alekhine died as champion in 1946. Good that he stands up to them. That he was in the wrong in regard to the stupid clothing rules is unfortunate. Now I look forward as ever to Magnus making his next move. I will be watching the rest of the championship on TV. Thanks James.

In many sports, what was once considered unacceptable or inappropriate is now commonplace and often regarded as an integral part of the sport’s culture. Just look at how once-forbidden items, like sneakers, shorts, or even casual t-shirts, have become fixtures in elite competition. The evolution of dress codes in sports is a clear reflection of broader societal changes in attitudes toward comfort, functionality, and fashion. Similarly, FIDE’s dress code may need to evolve to balance tradition with the expectations of modern players and audiences. After all, if jeans can be banned at a chess tournament in 2024, what’s next? Telling players to wear powdered wigs for a ‘true classical experience’? Magnus Carlsen’s ban for sporting jeans could very well be a key moment in this upcoming evolution, and in a few years, we might look back at FIDE’s retrograde attitude and chuckle. Who knows-soon enough, we may all be playing grandmasters in hoodies and sneakers, with FIDE begrudgingly admitting it was just ‘part of the game.

Ok. Then advocate for changing the rules rather than showing up to the event with the intention of just breaking them in protest. He knew what the rules were and he accepted to go to the event anyway. He was just *hoping* they wouldn't enforce the rules? Stupid.

If they're concerned about the "look", I'd say some of those pants shown look very similar to what Carlson had, so what's the big deal if they're jeans or not when they look just like jeans? The entire point of the rule is how things look, not a technicality on the exact material. It's a bit more than silly to be honest.
