This game might be symptomatic for the remaining games. Magnus is quite pragmatic, and won't go for the wins unless he has a clear advantage. I doubt Nepo goes all in even with white, he just wants to avoid more humiliation. Hope I'm wrong though...
@jasonkoch31822 жыл бұрын
Nepo is really in a bad spot. If he doesn't push for a win, this thing will end on Saturday, because with two more draws Magnus wins. If Nepo does push for a win in the next game, he leaves Magnus open to counterattack and a chance to win on Friday. Nepo loses in both scenarios, so at this point, it's really down to HOW Nepo wants to lose. Does he want to go quietly, or does he want to go out with a bang?
@kaemonawa83262 жыл бұрын
@@jasonkoch3182 I would love to see Nepo try giving it a shot and go all-in on the next few games. I understand Magnuses qualities and would see him as a deserving champion, but it is no humiliation to try to win (and possibly fail) in a world champ, aka "2nd" player in the world if you play for the win and just don't make it. Yep, there are other players rated higher atm and Nepo probably won't win another candidates, but that is all just another reason to try going for it now.

Nepo’s given up, winning against Magnus is hard enough as it is, but winning when he is up on the scoresheet is next to impossible. I think Giri said it best, Nepo’s now just salvaging his reputation, sending the message that ‘if I wanna draw, I can draw easily’. One thing Agad didn’t mention… Nepo blitz out all his moves.
@alexanderramos91212 жыл бұрын
Agreed completely. After he lost the first game, I expected him to come out playing like a maniac and attacking in really sharp lines, and then he essentially threw away his white pieces with that really drawish boring Roy Lopez line he played. Damage limitation mode? Hmm, you should be able to play solidly to draw against Magnus. Since Magnus is up 6-3 coming in, the onus is on Nepo to win, since any draw helps Magnus at this point. Why is Nepo playing the Petrov? His prep team has failed. He is not going to beat Magnus in a drawish line. His understanding of the endgame is so strong. Perhaps the best of any world champion. When he is in a drawn position he will either draw or win. And this is when the other players crack. They know how good Magnus is, it's not luck. And they must play perfectly to draw. 1 slight inaccuracy and Magnus is going to get blood out of a stone.

he successfully took Magnus out of his prep by playing the Petrov, according to Magnus , & there was a sharp line in the position that Magnus took some time looking at before deciding against it, I don't think Magnus would have taken it even if he was only 1 point up , but it seems good preparation, as there was at least a chance it would be accepted
@MrK6232 жыл бұрын
@@annalisajohn Yes. But he played the Petrov twice earlier when all the games were draws and the match was undecided. He had to play 1....c5 here and get an unbalanced and dynamic Sicillian.

The saddest thing to me is that games like this show that Nepo can indeed play disciplined, solid, chess and grind out draws as black - something which many doubted before this match. Yet that epic loss in Game 6 seemed to disturb his mental equilibrium so severely that he just had a total mental meltdown over the next 2 games, leading to silly losses and effectively rendering the second half of the match moot. A real shame.

I think Ian will really try to win coming off the next rest day go for a fighting position, even if the match is effectively over I doubt he wants to get shut out especially not in a way where he was playing far below what he and everyone else knows he is capable of doing. That said playing as black off the back of the last game taking a game to stabilize makes sense especially since he is probably too far in the hole to actually have a shot at the comeback. I do expect Magnus to try to play the safe line as often as possible because he is pragmatic and wants to make sure he wins the match even if the end is more boring. (Not that he won't play for another win if it is there, we know he does this but I don't expect him to take any risks he doesn't have to).

I might have exchanged Qs earlier and (from Magnus's side) play f3 before Nd2 to deny hope of Black playing Ne4 in the short to medium term. Maybe then possibly h4 to protect my N on f4 from g5 ideas, but (as The Stranglers advise) I probably wouldn't bring Harry and maintain my pawn structure as is.
