In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov talks about the Magnus Trap (also known as the Magnus Smith Trap). It is a chess opening trap in the classical variation of the Sicilian Defense, named after three-time Canadian chess champion Magnus Smith (1869-1934). It is solid and super-effective to play against the Sicilian Defense.
It happens after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 g6?! and Black falls into the trap 7.Nxc6 bxc6 8.e5! The key move here is 6.Bc4, which is played by Bobby Fischer a lot of times. It sets the stage for the powerful attack as it looks at the f7-square, targeting the Black king.

At 12:30 don't check black immediately, black can defend with bishop d7, it would turnout to be bad for white. Instead go for pawn e6. And then rook takes b2 , castle queen side crush the black

15:28 Find The Winning Continuation (puzzle) solution: Qe2 to prevent black going Qxh8. If Qe2, Qxh8 anyhow; then, Qxe7+ capturing black's dark square Bishop, and Kg8 is forced. Qe7+ is a royal skewer, and black's move Kg7 is forced. Re7+, Kh6 is forced. Qxh8 capturing black's (unprotected) Queen.
@GMIgorSmirnov

Actually, the best continuation is Nd5, attacking the e7-bishop. If Black takes the knight, then the White queen comes into the play with Qxd5+ and then Qxa8. Check out the PGN for complete analysis - bit.ly/3fMVKBE

Instinct is to push pawn to E6, hopefully he takes with pawn and blocks protection of knight, or we exchange bishops and I nab the knight. This is written before the spoiler so we'll see if I'm right.

I dont know about anyone else but I dont enjoy when u ask us to solve the continuations ourselves.I dont get anything out of that method of teaching.I dont know why teachers think that is a good method of instruction.I need the instructor to give me all the information.Thats why I am watching the videos.I will then try to use that information in my games.Referring back to other videos is not a good practice either unless those videos are clearly delineated part 1,2,3,etc.We need the information all in one place as much as possible in order to study effectively.Thank you very much.

Option 1: Nd5 and if cxd5, then Qxd5+ forks the king and the rook. Or if Qxh8, then Rxe7+. Now if Kg8 then Re8 wins the queen. But Kf8 saves the day for black. Hence, the following attack seems better! Option 2: Qe2 attacking the knight on c4 as well as the bishop on e7. 1. Qxh8 loses to Qxe7+ Kg8 Qe8+ Kg7 Re7+ Kh6 Qxh8 taking the queen. 2. Be6 is not an option due to Qxe6+ and now if Kf8 then Qxc4 wins the knight as well, or if Ke8 then Bxf6 Kf8 Bxe7+ Qxe7 Qxe7+ is winning. 3. If Ne5 trying to block the attack, then f4. Now Nc4 is not possible due to Qxc4+. Nd7 is not good as it blocks the bishop leading to Qe6+. So Ng4 and then h3 forces the knight to h6 and then Qe3 g5 Qe4 attacking c6, h7 and e7, giving a strong attack to white.
@GMIgorSmirnov
@GMIgorSmirnov 2 жыл бұрын
Kf8 doesn't save the day for Black. White is still winning as Black's pieces are poorly placed - the queen and rook in corners, bishop yet to be developed, unsupported knight. White can win by Rc7 for instance. Check out the PGN for complete analysis - bit.ly/3fMVKBE

Nd5 looks great, although I couldn’t find a finishing attack after..... (?)Nd5, Bef8. (?)Bxf6, Qd7........ just about anything white does here is answered with either Qf5, Nb6, Bb7, or if whites queen leaves the d file cxd5. If white plays Nxf6 instead of Bxf6 then then Bb7 can be played.
