I feel like every classical tournament the first round is very draw ish and everyone talks about classical chess being boring and outdated and then there’s so many awesome, high quality games that come out of the tournament as a whole. It’s kind of akin to Magnus having a bad couple of games and people wondering if he’s washed up. I’m sure there will be many interesting games in this tournament. I love levy, I just subbed to his Patreon, but it bugs me when he says they should just be playing rapid instead. There’s many great rapid tournaments, but I love classical so much. I follow the games live, I love the level of thought that goes into it, the slow burn that gradually speeds up as the time dwindles. To me it’s not only the pinnacle of chess, but the gold standard in deterring the best players in the world. I get there’s people out here like Levy (which I appreciate) promoting the game and wanting to see it grow, and in many facets I’m sure it can. But as far as classical goes maybe we just need to accept it’s never going to reach a mass audience and that’s ok, because within the chess world it’s still the most important format we have.
