❤I grew up in San Francisco in the 1950s\1960s. KGO -TV Channel 7 used to broadcast Mahalia Jackson’s 15 minute program just after dawn. One of my favorite memories is getting ready for school while my mother was getting ready for work and listening to the program. Mom was from Japan and loved Mahalia Jackson‘s voice. One word she always used to describe. It was “Power!”❤

Can anyone even imagine something like this on commercial TV today? She was magnificent - and give credit to Cash for inviting her on and giving her the whole stage to herself. These were two genuine people, not the phonies that litter the little screen today.

This Mahalia Jackon Style of traditional gospel is the exact same style that the old skool church mothers would sing this song back in the day, even up through the 1980's. When they would have those old fashioned prayer meetings, everybody would be down on bending knee and one of the church mothers would start off singing like this. You knew it was going to be one of those long, very long prayer meetings. I'd fall asleep somewhere in the middle of that prayer service. Lol but boy do I miss those times now! Authentic and anointed singing like this soothes the soul. 😇

If I was the grandchild of slaves...born and raised in poverty...then grew up, blessed to be an internationally known celebrity with a million dollar estate...I would take my time and thank God for His amazing grace too... Not to mention at the time of this taping Mahalia was mourning the loss of a first cousin that she grew up with. So you get the sense that Ms. Jackson was really talking to God, one on one, in song right here.

Always loved the JC Show, don't remember this one though! Mahalia really did sing as though, like tommyboo21 said, her only audience was God. It's true she sang wholly from the heart and puts most of today's gospel singers to shame. Man, can you imagine all those late-great singers in Heavenly concert?
@marysagar12 жыл бұрын
How astonishing how she so totally makes this song her own so that, as powerful and masterful as her voice is, it isn't about that, it becomes about the prayer, the purpose, the truth of what she is singing.
