Gustav Mahler wrote chamber music when he was young. While at the Vienna Conservatory, while a student of Robert Fuchs, he twice won prizes for movements for Piano Quintet. Unfortunately for posterity, these works were lost or destroyed along with others he was known to have written. The only piece of chamber music of his which is known to have survived is a movement from a Piano Quartet also composed while he was at the Conservatory in 1876. It shows the influence of Schubert and to a lesser degree Brahms without actually sounding a great deal like either of those composers. It is an interesting and important work because it is virtually the only example of his early writing which provides us with a view of his early compositional technique which as one can hear was quite developed at this early date. Throughout this work, there is a sense of the unknown in the musical progression with the growth in intensity comes a change in sound and sometimes it is truly astonishing to think that there are only four musicians. To amateurs, one can discern the orchestral sound, for which Mahler is famous, coming through in abundance in parts of this work. *Lucien*

Interesting, thank you! I find a resemblence with Brahms, his Piano Quartet no. 3.

@@staffanolofsson8201 There is no comparison because Mahler's writing is quite developed as I indicate.

Mahler es enorme, su don melódico superior se funde en uno con su entrenamiento técnico que fue muy elevado y nos regala un milagro, un compositor increíble, y solo tenia 16 años cuando generó éste cuarteto, un monstruo!

Great! Everyone plays very passionate and wonderful! For my taste the interpretation is a bit too much of a violin concerto, but much appreciated the effort and somehow it also works.
