I had the pleasure of seeing Kubelik conduct this work with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Berlin during its 1979 tour. It was of course a marvelous performance, and it occupied the second half of the program. The first half consisted of some Bruckner motets and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms (the BRSO chorus made the tour as well). Kubelik was a giant of a man, and, when his height was multiplied by standing on a podium, he was like a god presiding over things, and he presided very well!

Kubelik recorded all the Mahler symphonies with the Bavarian Radio Symphony orchestra 1967- 1971. The sound is glorious, but they have been cleaned up digitally. Kubelik had a reputation for putting out some of the best recordings in the Golden Age of the vinyl LPs. At this time it was still unusual for a conductor to record all the Mahler symphonies, but it had been done by some adventurous conductors. This orchestra plays brilliantly. Kubelik was a popular conductor around the world. He was the conductor of this orchestra (1961-1979). This orchestra is his sound.

Some of his best recordings are on YT. Listen to any of his Chicago Symphony recordings for Mercury in the mid-50s, Pictures, Tchaikovsky 6th to give a few. I can't forget his DG Dvorak cycle in the '70s.

The only performances I've ever heard of a world class orchestra (NY Phil) was in 1977 and Kubelik was guest conductor. I've loved him ever since. They performed my favorite symphony (at the time), Brahms 1st. It was so perfect it was surreal...

Having listened to the renditions of the Mahler 1st by so many great conductors from Walter, Klemperer, Horenstein, Boulez, and to many of the present day like, Abaddo, and Honeck, and so many others, I must say Kubelik's presentation and vision is so soul satisfying. This was a live performance, and as such, musician blunders can happen, but even so, Kubelik and the Bavarian musicians held it together. Go to 36:01 - 38:57. So many conductors seem to restrain themselves here. Kubelik intuitively puts it all together and allows the beauty of the music to flow unhindered. Beautifully done! It is not just about following Mahler's instructions, but while doing so allowing the beauty of the music to flow. This is a perfect example!

I somewhat, personally, knew one of the horn players of the Chicago Symphony, Daniel Gingrich, who thought Kubelik, was, above all, the greatest of the CSO conductors for some time. I don't know much about Kubelik, other than his phenomenal Bruckner 4 with Vienna. Just hoping to learn more about him!

What a find !! One of the greatest recordings of the last century on video. I've loved this since I was 15 yrs old back in the '70's. The electrifying ending was what first grabbed me, but since, it has been that and the immaculate phrasing. I loved his Mahler 4th as well. I need to give the whole set a re-listing.

andrewOT1939 Kubelik has always been very special in Mahler. It was his original (mono) Decca recording with the Vienna Philharmonic that turned me on to Mahler's First (and convinced me that Mahler had that sound in mind when writing the First Symphony and that was when the Vienna Philharmonic still hated Mahler before Leonard Bernstein had knocked some sense into them !) I took a girlfriend to hear Kubelik and the BRSO playing Mahler's First in London and she was converted to Mahler - and her bottom was separated from her seat by about 12 inches at the opening of the last movement !!! It is difficult to say what makes Kubelik so special - that is why we have music ! To say what cannot be said in words. But I think it is his great knowledge and great love of the music. He doesn't miss a trick but nor does he over-emphasize a point like virtually every other conductor does; it just flows naturally and inevitably and it is all there. Amazing.

See Translation
