Mahler made the final revisions of the symphony in New York while he was music director of both the Met and the New York Philharmonic. Maybe it could explain why the orchestra sounds so fabulous in this concert recording.

Got to say, I love the balance in the horn section. The ones in the upper register adding color rather than power to what the low horns are doing, just perfect!

It was a long slow process by which Lorin Maazel came to fully appreciate and understand Mahler, by his own admission. Earlier recordings by Vienna and Cleveland are to be avoided in my opinion. With his assumption to the role of Music director of the NY Philharmonic however, Maazel becomes one of the greatest interpreters of Mahler for all time.
