Hi Benjamin and Elmer!! I played French horn for several years during the mid-90's with the Houston Symphony Orchestra after winning an audition at age 22, always loved the Mahler V recording with Chicago/Solti/Herseth... Wonderful trumpet playing, Elmer! You are so worthy. Equally wonderful conducting/coaching, Elmer! I would love to work with you, Elmer - such passion and perspective! You would have my ALL, as did Sergiu Comissiona. I will NEVER forget getting 'the nod' from him during Strauss Don Juan. Yes, the setting, the mood, the desperate anger... the mind-blowing heaviness of the situation... Abandon all concern for accuracy/technique/acceptance. This is deep pain, way beyond instrumentalism... Be the voice of human sorrow and outrage. I am very moved by this video. You two are very special. Thank you, eternally. By the way, ... I have come back to brass playing - after many years away - and am now playing TRUMPET!!! Love it!!!

The trumpet truly does bring out the moments that the person being depicted on the battlefield of 4,000 dead the trumpeter the only one standing their alive. Quiet a sad scene for the mind to conceive, but it is brought to life through the trumpeter and of course the genius of Mahler too! This young man did a wonderful job playing the composition and Maestro Zander with a wonderful job of bringing the very best through helpful ideas so the young man was able to present an improved version of his trumpet parts.

I love this! The opening, in my opinion, is not just reflecting something with funeral nor it can be only characterized as "sad". It also represents some deeper mysterious idea or emotion, making contact with Cosmic principles, with God (as you wish). So in that more universal, highly abstract level it is "connected" with eternal life, joy and peace as well.
