I'm very impressed in the plane and the pilot...Not panicking is the way good pilots fly in pressure situations. getting the gear and flaps up with not 1/2 second to spare saved you from that plane digging in and flipping not to mention getting it down quickly as tall grass was running out, very impressive and saved the owner a few hundred bucks, pounds British Sterling, or Euros or whatever. Beautiful Plane, my 2nd favorite next to the Supermarine Spitfire and the Focke-Wulf...Well done mates....Lou from Chicago!!

Amazing quick thinking on the landing. It saved the airframe. The engine seized due to poor cooling! With gas 4 strokes it is very important to achieve at least 2:1 cooling. That’s making the cowl’s outlets at least twice the size of the inlet in order to have a proper airflow around the engine. Your model had almost no outlet making the front opening almost useless. A bigger bottom opening should have been there also pushing the cawl as much as possible forward with extending the aft flaps of the cawl outwards should solve the issue. Friends do fly this model with FG90R3 in +35°C air temperature with no issues
@CH-RC9 жыл бұрын
Just a tip... you may have seized the engine because you failed to properly baffle the engine. There's quite a large intake volume in that cowl, and not much airflow will move over the heads of the cylinders. You can see around 2:04 in the video you don't have a proper setup - these gas radials get pretty hot, and Saito's have aluminum bushings on the connecting rods. There is only a brass bushing on the master rod... which is kind of a cheap cop-out on Saito's part. The engine will work for good while if you're careful enough to keep it cool, and feed it enough oil. That's why Saito's need 15:1... which is a pretty high amount of oil.
@pappy14327 жыл бұрын
outlet should be 1/3 larger than inlet. hot has to get out!

Newbie question: does these engines run with two stroke oil added to the fuel, even though it is a four stroke, or is it actually 4 stroke oil/motor oil added to the fuel ? or something else ?

Beautiful airplane congrats on the maiden and the save. I have one of this engines install on my P-47G and on the 6th flight after the break-in it died on my too. I had to dead stick it and was avail to land with no problem. It was obvious that there was some kind of metal grinding inside so i send it to HorizonHobby for the warranty and they said that the problem were the ballbearing. Still waiting to receive my engine. I was thinking of buying an FG-84 but after this I'm having second thoughts.

Oil mix definitely in the old school days some RC actions had to mix their own. If you can find brass bearing to replace the aluminum ones that can help. I'm also sure that saito listed recommendations in their engine pullout guide.Nice flight though!

It appeared the engine might have needed a higher oil mix to give additional lube inside. they get extremely hot inside and you may not have had enough airflow through the cowl. all guesses, but I have had similar problems with a 4 stroke. Beautiful model, and great flying.

This is a very nice model except the wing dihedral is less than the real thing - other than that, excellent. Maybe you should have lifted half the flaps after the engine failed, it would give you a bit more speed and controlability as a result. Still, nicely saved, overall very nice flying.

Hey deano. I have this same airplane. I've been wondering I how you like it on the top flite zero? I'm on the fence between buying this engine, the kolm ez77 cc, or the Dle 55cc. Does this engine have the power you would prefer for this size plane? It's seems like your top speed at WOT was not as high as it would have been on the Dle 55. Sounds great though!! Please advise, thanks!!

Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. Does the evolution 77 fit in the zeros cowl? I thought it was too big to fit in the cowl without serious modifications. Do you mind sending a picture of your plane with the engine and cowl. I really would prefer this engine if it fits. Thanks

Hi Edwin My honest opinion Is that the saito flew the zero nicely and comfortably ! It's hard for me to tell if I was getting full power out of the saito as it was failing during flight, at some points I felt I needed more power for manoeuvres My personal opinion would be go dle and have some fun I know the saito and kolm sound lovely but to me more agro than there worth ? But the zero is a true stable model to fly with no vices I have flown the fw 190, p47, zero, p40 and every one is a lovely model to fly, altho the p40 can be a handful to land ! Hope this helps Regards dean

@Reverend779 жыл бұрын
+tbobborap1 The failure of all three conrods at once is a classic overheating problem. the oilfilm "tears" and then its metal on metal. I know the TF Zero and if theres no baffling you will have heat building up in the cowl as there is much more air coming in as there is space for it to leave. I made the same mistake on an fw-190 once and ruined an "indestructable" Laser 300v that way. Just a thought. The Ratio Air in to out Air out should be at least 1:3 (warm air expands). FWIW, the FG-60 already has the mods that are shown on videos of the FG-84.
