Apparently, even though this is a 4 stroke engine, it requires oil premixed into the fuel. The owners manual states, "Regular gasoline：Oil＝20:1 (Volume ratio)" For break in, instead of a rich mixture, why not just add a bit more oil?

As far as RC 4-stroke engines go, just about all of the commercially available ones use a fuel/oil mix. They are not like the 4-stroke lawn mower or automotive engines that keep their oil in a sump. The rich mixture may be recommended to control the engine temperature during break in rather than to add more lubrication.

I was thinking more on the lines of the full scale radial engines like those I worked on, many years ago in the Navy. The Wright R-3350 and R-1820 In the SP-2H and US-2B respectively. Several of the P-2 aircraft went to Argentina and one to the Navy museum in Pensacola Fla. We used to joke about restoring antique aircraft. Yep, the model engines like the Saito are far simpler than the radials in the full size aircraft. There are examples of functioning small radial engines that are scaled down versions of the originals, but those are typically not used on aircraft. I've seen the P-2 at the Pensacola museum when I visited. Great place with a huge variety of aircraft and historical pieces.

The extra fuel when run in a rich condition goes a long way to keeping the internal parts of the engine cooler as they wear in to each other.

Hello Tom, Papa Sal here from Reno....Still building...er.... assembling my GoldWing Pitts Python. Really leaning towards this awesome engine....and then HOLD ON Saito just launched a FG- 73 R5!!!!! WHAT??!! Boy I can't wait to see all the specs for this engine. Looking at what I CAN find it'll fit! But the weight specs are a miss print, but the you tube video teaser is awesome too! Great video Fantastic I was wondering about your prop selection . Has the notion of a 3 blade prop come to you at all I've got a good friend who fly's and his Old Sea fury really came alive with the 3 blade prop using your exact same engine .and it gave the aircraft that great authentic look .. I have been having good luck with the traditional 2-blade props. the biggest reason I don;t experiment with a three-blade prop is cost. I pay for everything myself so that kind of outlay impacts everything else in the flow of content for my site.

Why is it important for these Radial Engines to have an odd number of pistons/cylinders? Is it necessary to create a differential with this asymmetry?

In the radial engine, they fire from no 1 then every 2nd cylinder after that

Jeffrey314159 four stroke motors need odd number of cylinders, as the cam is actually a ring disk with the gear on the inside. The cam for this 3-cyl has two lobes for intake at 180 degrees, and two at 180 degrees positioned 90 to this. A five cylinder would have four lobes set at 90, and so on. The gear on the crank and the planetary gears set the ratio to the internal cam gear to make this 120 degree fire symmetrical and balanced which is not possible with an even number of cylinders.....If we go Two-Stroke however it doesn't matter and even will work because it fire's every stroke. I not only have a radial engine like this, I 3d-printed a working "visible" 5 cyl moki-radial engine that demonstrates this on four-strokes.

Are you running this engine on just the pumper carb? Or are you using a fuel tank that is pressurized for your engine exhaust ring?

The plane is designed for a 40 to 50cc engine, the Saito is a 60cc. There is a belief that the multiple cylinder engines produce less power per cc than do the single cylinder engines. So far that has not proven to be true with this engine.

Thanks for the reply. I have never heard that theory before... I guess the belief being twice (or more depending on # of cylinders) the friction from con rods, rings, valve train and such, robs the engine of power. However, I would think it false, as we all are driving multi cylinder vehicles, as opposed to 350 cubic inch 1 cylinder thumpers in our trucks and cars. Were there even any single cylinder aircraft produced? Maybe they are only referring to models, but I would think parasitic power loss issues would be there regardless of scale size.... This is the first Saito I have had in 30-some years. I can say that lots of people are flying various models of their engines and they keep selling. There has to be a reason for that kind of longevity!

So I'm curious on an update on how the engine has been regarding reliability since install? I have one I'm putting in a TF P47 Razorback just like your other video but worried about reliability as some friends have had cylinder mounting flanges cracking on these 60R3's. Have yours been good?

I've not had a bit of trouble with my Saito. I did adjust the valves recently but didn't find anything really out of whack there either. Nothing has cracked, blow up or anything else. It just keep puttin' along sounding really nice!

The snap rolls on takeoff are back. When I had the Saito running rich takeoff speeds were down so I held off on the snap rolls until it was running a little leaner which gave the YAK enough speed on takeoff to crank the snap out without opening up a bunch.

Hi, after seeing some of your vids I have just ordered the FG60. I will be installing it on a TF razorback P47. My question is do you have to pressurize the tank with this engine? Seems to have some two stroke traits.....

Than ks for writing, and you are going to love this engine! I have not pressurized the tank. I use a standard three line setup and it has worked fine. No issues at all. One tip I can give you is that with the top cover opened as I show in the video I can reach in and put my finger over the velocity stack that comes on the Saito engine. I hold my finger against that and flip the motor twice before turning the ignition on. Then it seldom takes more than two flips and it is chugging along nicely.

Nice video , I just got the saito 60cc radial and was torn between a Top Flight P47 or a 50cc Yak 55 with an 86.5 wing . I thought if I get the P47 I wouldn't be doing much aerobatics if I got the Yak I would be able to do more aerobatics with it . Its the sound mostly why I had to have it . I did go with the Yak and the Keleo Muffler , mine didn't come with a smoke nipple but no big deal ill put one in myself , got to have smoke , So I was wondering what aerobatics have you tried with it in the Yak . Will it hover nice and pull out ok ? I'm also putting a Cortex Pro Gyro in the plane . Thanks

I never had an issue with this motor and it was box stock the whole time. Flew it on three different planes, no problem. As far as I know it is still flying in the 91", 30-pound Waco with the guy I sold it to, stock, no modifications.

Good point Arthur, I was thinking the same when I saw this video, specially because my local hobby shop has this engine on sale and I was reluctant to buy it because all I read about the wrong spark advance that comes from the factory and also about the intake problems and the corrections that are needed and Morris is selling. But apparently Saito decreased the compression ratio changing with a new piston and also reinforced the base of the cylinder, so something might have been wrong for them. Who knows were the truth is, may be in between Morris solution and the new Saito modifications?

I even had a guy tell me "he could clearly see a DA70 in the cowl" in the video. I checked with everyone at th3e field when we made that video and none of them will own up to swapping the Saito out for a DA. Whoever did that, also swapped the DA out for the Saito before I left. I guess I have sneaky friends.

If you find someone smart enough to build such an aircraft they will be able to compute the amount of power needed to fly it. I am not that person! Shocking as that may be...

It is definitely possible. The question is whether or not it would be cost effective. Each of these cost about 1000 dollars and produce 4.5 horsepower. So getting 10, and spending 10 thousand dollars, gets you 45 horsepower total. Or, you could get something like the Kawasaki 440, which produces 45 horsepower, weighs about the same as the bank of 10 engines, will be more reliable (very important when it is you up in the air) and only costs about 3 thousand dollars.

An even bigger problem is that for any kind of craft carrying humans you need a certified engine. You don;t get to just hook up a bunch of anything and let er' rip. Whatever you put on it, the FAA has to give it the OK, as they do the aircraft before it goes airborne.

Fournier Don All of those EAA Experimental planes are inspected to insure airworthyness, competent assembly etc. the engines also have to be recognized as airworthy. They are just trying to keep some guy from building a plane and trying to fly on a bunch of hobby motors.........
