This is the opening sequence of the main inlet valve MIV (Spherical valve). When MIV opening exceeds 35% Deflectors get opened 100% and nozzle opening starts.

I appreciate the apparent ease of controlling such a large amount of potential energy to spin the turbine/generator. Getting all this power sychronized to the power grid takes a gentle touch !

Once had a young engineer working at a very small dam close penstock inlet valve way to fast. This caused several hundred feet of pipe to implode.

@@adamruck no the air inlet was to small so the water rush down the pipe into river. This moving water with a small air inlet created a vacuum. The vacuum caused the old and rusted penstock to implode. I tried to find the news article but it was a small town in NY. All I remember it’s next to shoe factory. I was commercial diver at the time and worked on a ton of dams.

since the start hydro has only had one turbine hall now in 2016 a test was run in Australia this test allows upto three turbine halls per dam Hydro is more clean and greener than wind and solar

Lived next to the andritz plant. No clue they made stuff like this
