Short lines can sometimes have pretty interesting lashups. One time I had a CEMR lashup with Ex-CN GP9RM CCGX 4119 in Zebra Stripes, Ex-IAIS SD38-2 CEFX 6057 in patched IAIS Colours, and Ex-CP CEMR SD40-2 in the CEMR Scheme.

Taylorover9001 - The Cando Railfan The HMCR here in Huntsville doesn't have as many engines as some shortlines, but they have an ex-Everette Valley SW9 (in a slightly modified EV paint scheme, but it's out of service), an ex-CSX MOW/L&N U23B (used to be in the CSX MOW paint scheme until they repainted it last year), one of the last three known ex-Southern B23-7s to retain its original high-hood (also in the HMCR's paint scheme, used to be in NS's paint sheme), and two B39-8s (one is ex-SLRG, the other is ex-MMA, both are in their previous owners paint, but the SLRG has patches on the side; the ex-MMA one is also out of service).

Pretty cool. My favourite shortline in Winnipeg, the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway, only has two working locomotives, which are both MLW RS23's. The BNSF shortline in Winnipeg only has one locomotive working in Winnipeg at a time, which is currently BNSF 1523, a GP28-2.

I think that cantilever was formerly a wig wag. Amherst has a few crossings with mini cantilever signals like that on Whitney st. and bridge st. they later just took the wig wags off while keeping the pole and just added regular flashers to the pole.
@freebrickproductions8 жыл бұрын
Nope! This is actually just how US&S did some of their small cantilevers back in the day. If you look at this crossing, you can see that it was designed to mount the lights like this: www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Ohatchee/Main/

George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting This crossing is fully incandescent. I'm actually not aware of too many LED crossings along the ATN.
@George_M557298 жыл бұрын
***** Wonder why. I think they are turning halogen crossings to LED because they don't want to spend time and money repeatedly replacing broken bulbs.
@freebrickproductions8 жыл бұрын
George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting The ATN is a shortline, and they don't have the money to throw around on crossing upgrades like Class Is do. Most railroads also went with LEDs because the railroads realized that LEDs would last longer and save more money in the long run, despite higher initial costs. However, NS didn't adopt LEDs until 2014, and even that seems to be due to companies starting to drop support for incandescent equipment.

interesting crossing. I bet there used to be a wigwag there, in looking at how the mast was built.
@freebrickproductions8 жыл бұрын
It is an odd one. I had thought that at one time as well, but it was just a signal that US&S offered. Where the lights are mounted (and how they are mounted) shows that it couldn't have been a wig-wag.
@jovetj8 жыл бұрын
Wow, I would have thought it was just a custom job.
@freebrickproductions8 жыл бұрын
Jovetj Same here, but since multiple examples of these exist on ex-SAL lines around the US, it had to be something US&S offered.
@jovetj8 жыл бұрын
If it was just seen on one railroad that suggests to me it was a custom design they came up with themselves. I've never seen anything quite like it before. And the heavy use of threaded pipe (versus prefab/bent) also makes me think custom. If, maybe, a custom but standard design the railroad used at times.
@freebrickproductions8 жыл бұрын
Jovetj Maybe, since these haven't been found on non-ex-SAL lines yet.

I can remember some years back (10+ years now) before they built a bridge over the CSX rail line that passes thru in Novi, MI on Novi Rd. south of Interstate 96 that had a very similar small cantilever type crossing like this because of a hill on the south side of the crossing. @@freebrickproductions I noticed the overhead lights didn't have the normal brackets. Looks like they are mounted directly .

Yea, there's points on the pipes for the overhead where the lights are mounted to, most likely being where the wiring is run through. Also of note is that the mast lights on the "micro-cantilever" don't appear to be an original feature of the signal. (None of the WABCO lights here are really, as they would've all originally been US&S 8 inch lights, but it appears the SAL-spec US&S "micro-cantilevers" of this style never had mast lights, originally.)
