Although the car broke down in a lane ,so wasn't able to limo to a hard shoulder . It demonstrates clearly , why a hard shoulder is needed . And just how fuc@@ng ridiculous the plans are , to remove hard shoulders of many motorways , is complete insanity . Smart motorways have been condemned by many rescue services . Perhaps the public might be listened to in regards to this . But I suspect not .

Fortunately the construction of new smart motorways has now been banned, as of April this year. How long it will take to completely remove them from the public network I don't know, but that is some small comfort that the government has realised how deadly they really are and will continue to be.

@@mikegrace Does not matter she was in a child seat, in the uk (where this was filmed) it is ilegal for anything other then a rear facing baby seat to be used in the front of a car with rear seats. The use of a rear facing baby seat in the front is also only provided the front seat does not have active airbags. All other child seat have to be in the rear. It even highlights this as the second part on this video is a lady getting fined for having a child in the front kind of takes the piss if you ask me.

This brought me to tears. My brother used to work for a breakdown company that had the contract to clear motorway accidents in Kent. He is a seriously tough, hard man, & completely unshakable, until he did this job. He did it for eighteen months, but couldn't face it any longer. He said he saw things that nobody should see. Blood, bone, brain matter, shit, etc.... The bits & pieces of shattered bodies that were left in vehicles after the remains of what were once people, that could be removed. It's the only time since we were kids that I've seen him breakdown sobbing when he told me. He hasn't talked about it since, & if anything like this comes on TV, he turns it off or walks out of the room. The emergency services, have support & training to deal with this sort of thing (thankfully!), but the non emergency services such as him don't. Please think about this when you're driving, because it's not just the victims that have their lives affected. He's doing ok now, but it changed him....

I feel for your brother as I was a recovery driver for 15yrs and know exactly what he went and is still going through. I'm not able to work because of the mental health problems it has caused me. After a long and hard struggle, a suicide attempt and 6 months in a Psychiatric Hospital I am now getting help from Psychiatrists and Psychologists. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, Unstable personality disorder and depersonalisation/derealisation disorder. I have been told that for your mind to be able to cope with the horrors that you see on a day to day basis it shuts off to make it seem unreal and makes you feel like your living in a dream. It also causes all the symptoms of depression but unfortunately none of the usual anti depressant meds have any effect because the cause is different. Because I did the job for 15 years it has left me unable to return to a "normal" state and cost me my marriage, my daughter who I have not seen since she was 4yrs old, my career (HGV Driver) and many other things. I have not driven so much as a skate board for the last 13yrs because of my disassociation from my surroundings make me feel unsafe to drive any longer and fear hurting someone else because of my problem especially after seeing first hand the devastation that can be caused. As you rightly said the Military and emergency services quite rightly get the help if and when they need it but no one gives a thought to the people who have to clear up the mess. I advise your brother to seek medical help sooner rather than later if he is having problems coping with it because take it from someone who knows, over time life events like bereavement, stressful situations etc will make it worse.

I'm a police officer in London, although I live right on the London/Kent border. I once was on a crime scene for a fatal incident whereby a bin lorry had reversed over an elderly chap, and the huge tyre had gone over his throat..... even 6 hours after the accident once the body had been taken away, truck removed, there were still blood marks and a bit of throat flesh in the road. Went to a fatal incident that same year between a private hire driver and a moped rider. Moped rider died at the scene unfortunately. I've been to plenty of "sudden deaths" (known as "unexpected sudden deaths") whereby our role is to work as agents of the HM Coroner and to ensure the death is natural and not suspicious in anyway. I've touched, searched and rolled numerous dead bodies during the 7 years i've been doing this, and most are just "routine". Some do stay with you however and I recall my second sudden death which transpired to be a suicide by hanging, found by a dog walker the next morning. His face, the house, the road, the names of all the officers present, and even our callsigns for that day I remember. I rememeber it especially moreso as it was the day of my 23rd birthday. This was nearly 6 years ago now. Also I definitely got no "training" in how to deal with these things, after all it's only when you experience it for real before you know how it will affect you.

I started working for a Recovery company in East London/Essex back 1978 on a 3 week work experience course through school. I was 14 at the time and very quickly saw my first sight of gore and the result of vehicle crashes. I found that one way to try to cope with it (advice from a police sergeant) was to have a very dark sense of humour and to try to laugh it off which seems to be the way most emergency service personnel try to cope with what they have to see. Back then the fire brigade were not as well equipped as they are now and recovery operators had a larger role in freeing trapped victims from the wreckage both alive and dead. I worked in that role for 15 years on and off up until I was around 30 and in that time attended thousands of vehicle crashes. When I was 47 after steadily declining and feeling more and more detached from reality caused by life events like the loss of parents etc I had a major breakdown and attempted to take my life. I could only describe the feeling as having a block in my head that had got to a point that I no longer felt safe to drive as I had lost my situation awareness. It took 7 years to eventually find a good psychologist who after seeing for months finally worked out what was wrong (PTSD, Depersonalisation/derealisation disorder) and suddenly it all made sense. Up to that point I had tried many different anti depressants none of which made any difference because my depression symptoms had a different cause to the regular serotonin imbalance. I'm now 60 and still unable to work or function normally especially after the effects of going through the covid epidemic (had covid 3 times plus long covid which I'm still dealing with) which pushed me back even further from reality. I apologise for going on a bit but I wanted to say the basics of what I've experienced to try to help you and anyone else who who reads this and may be going through similar experiences that your not alone and to advise that if you feel your situation is having an effect on your mental health to either seek help or take up any offers of help from your professional bodies before it becomes a problem. @@thefiestaguy8831

Maybe the car would have crashed into traffic a moment later, killing both because they were in the front, so whatever god they belive in made them have a "less bad" accident to save their life and give him a new perspective of life, maybe that was necessary. I however think there is only truth in the chaos theory, nothing happens for a reason, its you that can make it memorable and life-changing. Many credit a lot of their own achievements to a divine presence, which discredits themselves. Its like an anti-motivator, I have never understood why people do that.

More to the point, why fill a smallish car up with so much crap in the back seats that you can't transport what should be the, most, valuable precious thing not just in your life, but in her family's lives, quite possibly. We used to have a mark 1 1976 original, Ford Fiesta, two doors, but you could make the back go flat if you needed extra boot room, which we could have done with when we went on holiday, mostly down to Cornwall. My mum would load the boot to the top, she'd have suitcases piled behind her driver's seat on the way to, Cornwall, but on the way back from, Cornwall, there would also be fresh baked pasties piled on top, but, most importantly, my carseat with 5-point harness, was secured safely in the back before anything else was loaded. I never, rode in the front passenger seat until I was in Secondary School. I wasn't in a booster seat either. The adult seatbelts were already the correct height when I was around 6 years old and growing out of the child seat.

Your statement is incorrect. The Youngest was in a car seat, it clearly shows that at the end. The other 1 were on booster seats & wearing seat belts. Not ideal no, but your comment is completely misleading. She didn't do as much as she should, but she had done something. Also in this case, she was not at any increased risk of having an accident just because she had no Insurance. Get your facts straight before you make unjustified comments.

As a resident who lives close to a major section of the m62, it's always stood still, the removal of hard shoulder to accommodate smart motorways and other reasons is ridiculous. It's very open and high elevation, leading to quite treacherous conditions come winter, with fog, ice and snow.

That good Samaritan who went to the Fiesta to get the phone to keep police updated and also pried the Seat's door open to rescue the trapped driver deserves some form of public recognition. He is a legend, heroically risking his life to help others without regards to his own safety, with cars and HGV's flying up behind him. He could have died, just think if a 44 ton lorry ploughed into him, they take a while to stop. There would have been nothing left of him to scrape off the tarmac. When I used to drive buses and coaches I had 14 non-fault accidents in a year. I even had a woman bounce off the side of one of our latest buses and try to bolt ,so I didn't stop for passengers, and slammed the bus diagonally across the carriageway so she couldn't move. She admitted she had no insurance and was bawling her eyes out, and traffic was piling up. I'm a sucker when pretty girls cry and I couldn't see any damage so I let her go. One incident was when I was driving down the promenade and I heard a noise, checked my left mirror to see a guy bouncing down the road. I turned to the passengers and said Why do they walk on the effin road!!! He's sitting when I got to him, his mrs was crying and his kid had blood pouring off him. There was a dick on the bus who was constantly yelling on his phone so I told him to call 999 when he sheepishly said it was a fake phone. I honestly thought I'd killed him. Cops come, ask the guy if he was walking on the road and he said no, then the cop said ah, so the bus was driving down the pavement then. What happened was there was a rubbish bin next to the kerb and he stepped around it and glanced off the bus, breaking a window and it spun him around and he punched his kid right on the nose! What scared him the most was he saw the back wheel pass by right next to his face. I was a nervous wreck but that's not the worst incident. The worst one was when I was coming down a hill with a slight bend. There was a woman wanting to turn right so she was waiting for me to pass when, for some inexplicable reason another car came up and OVERTOOK the waiting car. My bus weighs 10 tons, so if I am doing 30mph, thats 300 tons of force., plus whatever mass she had. At least she died instantly and not in agony. Her vehicle was totally and utterly destroyed to the point of being unrecognisable as a vehicle. I had the shakes from hell and couldn't stop crying. Bus company sent out a van to take me back to the depot, and all the other drivers went heyyyyy killer! I kept thinking for years if there was something I could have done something to avoid it but I had no reaction time. I now suffer from serious mental health issues and still see it in my dreams, 35 years later. Cops see this all the time, takes a special sort of person who can do that. I used to hate them, now I have respect. It can be a thankless job. Sorry this comment is so long.

I was relieved to hear that Caston and his young daughter both survived the horrific crash. Of course there was an element of luck involved but there often is with a lot of situations in life. Just as well he had his daughter's child safety seat strapped in properly and in the front.

Nah that Fiesta driver is 100% at blame, no element of luck to it. He stopped voluntarily on a motorway because a warning light came on, his car didn't break down. He also should have pulled over to the hard shoulder, but he didn't, he just stopped in the middle of the motorway - voluntarily, with his 2 year old in the car. The guy is an absolute danger to socierty and should be banned from driving.

As a truck driver in Sweden seeing how people slow down to watch a scene on the opposite side is frustrating and could be very dangerous, i tend to try to ignore them if it is on a big road with divided carriageways like the M1(E4/E20) i have to keep my eyes on the traffic ahead of me, on a smaller road things change of course but still keep an eye out for officers signals and slow down/stop, not rocket science really but seems like it at times.

A few years ago, in Canada, they passed a law that says all vehicles on highways/motorways must slow down and keep one lane away from all emergency vehicles. this includes the police, firefighters, ambulance and tow trucks.

Would hardly call that "doing well for herself".. I drive a 2017 3 litre BMW saloon car, which is just as quick, if not quicker than a 135i.... I wouldn't say "I've done well for myself". I just tried and didn't give up when things got hard, just pushed on instead. I earn just under double the average UK salary. Maybe I have higher standards of "doing well". One of my mate's dad's has millions in his bank account, his house is worth £750,000 with the mortgage fully paid off. He buys a brand new £50k-£60k car every three years paid up front, no finance, at one point owned a second house in Scotland (worth £250k) AND has 2 x yearly cruises (probably around £10k each - him and the wife) and 2x yearly family holidays to numerous countries including Spain, Egypt, Italy, day trips to Paris, and retired a year or so ago and will never have to work a day in his life again, he's in his very early 50's. That's what I call "doing well for yourself". Meanwhile my parents are 64 and 62 and still working.

One of those things I realise every time I watch these shows is how good the swedish insurance rules are. The coverage for your own car may differ, but when it comes to what you cause for others a car in traffic will be insured for all drivers. If you don't sign an insurence, or don't pay for it, you will get insured by a non profit organisation that charges insane rates but makes sure pretty much everyone is covered. If you're not to blame for an accident you're almost guaranteed compensation for damages - whatever the insurer then claims from the one responsible is not your problem.

I seriously hope this is an edited out of context statement because if he did that, he's 100% responsible, you don't stop in the middle of a motorway when a warning light appears. My Mini broke down in the overtaking lane of a duel carriageway (A5 near to where it becomes the M54) and I was very fortunate that the lorry driver to my left let me coast in front of him onto the hard shoulder. The steering had gone stiff as well making it more difficult. I've been on that road hundreds (probably thousands) of times and there are always dozens of people speeding and on there phones each time. Not only that but there are some bends that are tight for a 70 mph road.

a5 and m54 great road, every corner can easy be done at 70mph. every weekend for over a decade up and down that road. parts that road 100mph felt like walking pace only ever seen one crash on that road the long left hander not long from the m6 heading wales direction car i was in doing 90mph what safe but boy racer must been a 130 plus he went past like we were parked he lost back end hit the center and car spin many times, near telford . i broke down on that road other direction , was between two lanes merging and two lanes to the right back rear tire had gone heading towards m6, car felt like turbo had gone, car fully loaded as coming back from my mums on xmas day the tire wall were paper thin it just felt car lost turbo and the amount extra weight in the small car must done quite a few miles testing the engine as that what it felt like, 20 miles later i thought id check before i got on to m6 it was rear left flat tire not much left side wall , changed tire between two live lanes either side, cameras rotated and looked at me as luggage unloaded, first ever tire change very new driver at the time but did it fast as possible and very little run up to join m54 so it was 0-60 (truck speed) clouds black smoke . id still change tire on motorway if need be but id make sure i had better run up to build speed to re join

I am one of those who have ended up with injuries both physical and mental due to an accident caused by a driver who didn't bother to stop at a stop sign and then fled the scene on foot. 10months later I am still suffering pain and ptsd. Watching this makes me feel sick BUT the more I watch the less I have panic attacks. If you drink, take drugs, don't have insurance etc DO NOT DRIVE!!! God forbid my son had been in the car with me, the passenger side got crumpled and the door frame twisted etc more than my side did.

It was one of the MOST scary events of my life, as big lorries were literally tanking it down the hill past me. I really thought it would be the end of me! I was SO thankful when the police arrived so quickly. They were really kind, and helped me get to safety. 💙🚨

I live in Michigan, USA. Many years ago, I was driving down local 2 lane road, either headed to a Dr. Appointment, or work meeting. I was getting close to major highway, when I see older pickup sitting on paved road shoulder on fire. The driver luckily made it out safety, no passengers with him. Poor fellow was on his knees behind his pickup, he probably was lucky he didn't get trapped inside the truck and got burned, or burned to death. I called local emergency services. Others had already, but they hadn't really given them very good directions. I wish I could have stopped to offer more assistance, but if it was work meeting, boss was real stickler about showing up. I do try to stop to see if there's anything I can do for them when possible though.

anyone who is not capable of noticing a stopped car or other obstacle on motorway, should never be driving a motor vehicle ever again. it's really simple - if one is not capable of noticing a hazard on road, then how do you expect them to avoid them? that means they are danger to other road users and pedestrians, if one doesn't notice a STOPPED CAR in middle of the road, how can you expect them to notice a pedestrian crossing the road? if for whatever reason someone is not able to notice obstacles in middle of the road, then that person is NOT fit to drive. it's THAT simple. ONLY exception should be if something happens to you or your car, like if some debris flies into your windshield or passenger pepper sprays you by accident or any other freak accident, then it's acceptable that you can't see, because you literally cant .. but for any other reason .. Never allow a braking down vehicle to come to a stop in the live lanes, experienced drivers know to get in the slow lane as soon as mechanical trouble shows up/or even if you only suspect thats its coming, get into the slow lane, before the engine stops dead. You are traveling at speed on a motorway, you have kinetic momentum, you have got to use it, intelligently, start manoeuvring to the hard shoulder, as soon as you're aware the engine is shutting down. To me this is common sense, but without a shred of doubt, people need to be told this today. I would say that if you're driving a lot on motorways, do an advanced driving course, preferably one run by ex police. if you're over 40 and well experienced, you're probably good to go.

Surely if you breakdown in the middle lane it would be extremely dangerous to get out. I would be inclined to stay in the car with the hand brake OFF and car in neutral. This would minimise the impact of a rear end collision as the car would be pushed forward and greatly lessen the impact.

I think it’s interesting how so many people are surprised when people help others an accident. But at the same time, I’m not. Just like they said the man that helped was brave. I did the same thing, but I was extremely pregnant and I ran across three lanes of traffic when I heard an accident outside of my office. And everybody was just standing around, including men and other women people that weren’t even pregnant. And the only pregnant person was the one that ran across traffic to try to free a woman that was trapped in her car. And trying to lean across her and dig through her car to find her phone so that I could call her husband to tell her that she had been in an accident. And then being yelled at by my coworkers asking me WTF I was doing because I was pregnant. But they were just standing there and they weren’t helping and nobody else was helping this woman. And she was an older woman. And she was scared and trapped in her car and it’s kind of crazy that a pregnant woman ran across three lanes of traffic crawled through somebody’s car and found her itty-bitty phone, and also got this woman that was trapped in her car out of her car, and then supported her and got her across three lanes of traffic and two safety. And not a single person came to help me. Well made me feel really good was hours later when I was getting ready to go home because it was at the end of the day I saw her husband was picking her up. And I rolled down my window just to ask if she was OK, and she told her husband that I was the one that ran across traffic, and released her out of her car and got her safely across the road. And he was just so thankful. And continuously thanked me for helping his wife. And when she mentioned to him that I was also very pregnant, he was even more thankful.

I cannot imagine why we haven't adopted Germany's rules on creating an emergency lane when queuing on a motorway or dual carriageway. As you can see here, when there's no hard shoulder, everyone has to move to the edge of their lane and the emergency vehicles have to go up the middle. That's exactly what happens in both the UK and Germany. In Germany they move out of the way as soon as a queue forms. Here, we choose to delay the emergency services first, before we move out of the way. Even though we know if the traffic's stopped, the emergency services will more than likely have to come past. It's indefensible. It delays ambulances. That slows response times which is bound to worsen outcomes for those needing help.

I don't know why I am watching this. 2 adult children of a family friend are currently in ICU after the taxi they and a friend were travelling in, was hit by a drunken driver. Their friend is dead, The male is in an induced coma on a ventilator and his sister has 15 broken bones including her pelvis, 8 ribs and her neck. It only happened 3 days ago and is still so raw.

If you're in a live lane with traffic speeding all around you, you don't necessarily have a choice. Especially if you've got to get a two-year-old out of the seat with you. He hadn't long called 999 when the collision happened. If he'd started to get himself and his daughter out in that time instead, they would have been run into by the Seat themselves, rather than their car. Normally yes, you should get out of the car. But this guy was between a rock and a hard place in his particular circumstances.

In Aussie, we have our compulsory 3rd party insurance that's included in the registration to be on the road, then some people have other insurance e.g. full comprehensive insurance that covers any type of accident you may have, theft etc.

Most vehicle breakdowns are a result of misuse, or poor maintenance, or old/high-mileage vehicles with cumulative reliability problems. The Germans have a way of addressing this. It is illegal to break down on a motorway - i.e do not drive an old banger, overloaded mini, or poorly maintained car on the motorway. If you stop on an autobahn because of no fuel, that is driver negligence and will cost a lot of money in fines. WRT British car insurance - it is unique in Europe that the British insurance companies have been allowed to create such a miserly and dangerous insurance situation, with no government intervention. Just about everywhere else in Europe, the CAR is insured (not the driver alone), with green card, all year, all drivers EXCEPT specified exclusions e.g. minimum age for sports cars etc. Insurance is only invalidated by theft, twoc, drunk-driving etc., but, in all cases, third-party insurance CANNOT be waived by the insurer. Otherwise, just like in Britain, the victim of an 'uninsured' vehicle gets a double hit, and that is unacceptable especially wrt possible death, medical or disability damages. Good practise examples are available, that have worked well in other countries for decades, but the 'old boys club' in Westminster just cannot be bothered to do their job and look after the safety of British motorists on the overcrowded UK roads (another point of contention).

I've been riding my motorbike (not the same one) for over 30 years now and have had 8 serious (needing hospital/ambulance) accidents. Even though some of these accidents being entirely of my own making, the response of any emergency services involved, AND members of the general public, has been so overwhelmingly helpful and supportive that it actually brings a tear to my eye. I think it's one of the main hallmarks of living in a civilised society (being helpful, kind and non-judgemental in emergency situations) 👍

As for the fatal at the end I have zero sympathy for the 3x drunk Micra driver who wrote himself off driving at speed on the opposite carriageway. I've worked in motorway control rooms and my only sympathy is with innocent victims, the emergency services personnel and the highways incident clean up crews. The part where the families car caught on fire hit me hard. That happened to me and my family and it looked so similar of what happened. No hard shoulder, absolutely terrifying. It’s illegal in Australia because study after study after study has shown that in almost every single circumstance, children are safer in the back seat of the vehicle. This accident is an anomaly. Had she been in the front of an Australian vehicle she could still be dead because you cannot disable the airbags in Australian vehicles & airbags go off with enough force to cause significant head & brain injuries to a child.

I'm actually finding this to be a good lesson in what most helps the emergency services - obviously, I know to get out of the way, but I would probably have done what the lorry did - move towards the middle to "create" a hard shoulder on my left, but from this, it sounds like the opposite is what's more needed.
