I live on this block in a basement and this morning had me petrified. Waking up at 6am to water coming inside in all angles, not having enough time to my grab stuff. I could go on.. but I’m just really thankful that my family and I got out and we’re all ok

This has been an issue for decades - sadly, these people are not a priority. Proof - you can still drive through Far Rockaway and see damage from Hurricane Sandy - The Rockaways were hit hard by the 2012 storm. More than 1,000 structures were destroyed, and 10 feet of storm surge flooded the area. Queens residents lived for months without heat and with mold in their homes from the water damage.

It was horrible there was almost no way for me to get home I had to walk into the water to b51st to ps 105 . The water was up to my knees. My friend's mom took me home. it was truly terrible. the worst part is i had heels on . thank god we made i home safely. I send prayers to all that had went through this aswell.

This is a bad time: Deep in the dead of winter with the freeze-over expected. Temperatures will drop into the low teens overnight. Bad day for this in Queens: The temps will plunge. With no electricity, the sump pump may be needed again for the possibility of more flooding from broken pipes.

I live in an area named Vinegar Hill. From the east end of where I live you have to get up a hill. I've never see a flood up here. On the other side to the north the elevation drops and the East River is there. During Hurricane Sandy and a few others I saw how people could not remain in their homes. It gets bad in Queens. I happen to be lucky I live at the top of a hill.

Far Rockaway is close to the beach so that area is prone to floods. There has to be a way to curtail that from happening with pumps and redesigning the homes to be flood proof.

Certain people who call the whole area "Far" Rockaway. But locals call it the Rockaways. Beach 70 is specially the Hammels area. And you actually closer to "Rock Park" (Rockaway Park) than you are in the area known as Far Rockaway. But maybe things change from living there briefly in the 1980s.

By the way, train stations that line the inlet actually make it easier to identify the area you are in. But it is more complicated than that. Living at Seaview towers I could look across the 40s projects and see an area called Bayswater. My cousin told me never go over there, because it was so bad. As well as Arvenue and Edgemere, of which a housing project was name after these neighborhoods. So you could literally be in another neighborhood within 5 minutes walking.

This story is getting old. When these people purchased their homes they were made aware they are in a flood zone. Additionally, they are on a strip of land surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Jamaica Bay on the other side. It doesn't take a genius to know flooding is inevitable during high tides coupled with coastal storms.

Are people in these areas able to get insurance? Many homes in flood prone zone can't get insurance. Always a good idea to check that before buying a home. I know homes around the Broad Channel area get flooded almost every year.
