The lightweight construction of the fire building might have saved lives, as it renders the buildup of high pressure impossible. Just like the wooden barracks used for the production of fireworks. At 17:00 we can see what is left of the building after the blast: windows and walls blown out, just the vertical 2 x 4s left.

Great job by the FD. I saw a natural gas main fire once. A backhoe or something had hit the main in the street, and it was like a 75-100 foot high blow torch blasting up furiously from the middle of the road. Anyway, these days with appliances and such being made not to last, but to fail so they can be replaced sooner, I wonder if residential explosions will increase.

@@Og-Judy This shows how attached residential structures are built to confine fire to one unit. An explosion is much more than a fire, so other units were damaged. I think I read that four of the units close to the one with the explosion will have to be demolished. Structural damage is obvious in the unit to the left of the destroyed unit. Police rescued a woman trapped under a sofa on the first floor of the that unit.

@enid0mom2 жыл бұрын
If I lived in a rural area far from fire hydrants and water had to be brought in by tanker, I would put in a sprinkler system. I know those systems are expensive, especially if you have to retrofit and existing structure, but could easily pay for itself with a damage prevented in a single fire. Give the vollies plenty of time to get there and establish a water source if the sprinkler doesn’t put the fire completely out. In explosion like this though, it probably wouldn’t make any difference.

Also watch the video very closely again. ATF does not show up for gas fires. They don’t use dogs smelling around in gas either! As you watch it listen to the one leader screaming for everyone to clear the one building and then for the others to get off the rooftops! Yes gas aided in the destruction! I worked for a large gas utility and obliteration are rare. Collapse is the big issue. If your close or in the direct area inside a structure. You will get one he'll of a story for your grandkids. In the 90s I was In front of a hell of alot buildings ready. We would pull up, then set up and drill and test every hole till we located broken main. 3 to a crew. Then we had to dig and repair main. I Fn loved the adrenaline rush. We were the only ones In front of house. If it went u no what. We were probably visiting the all mighty because we were outside of boom and would of caught kinetic energy. I am talking from Dec to Mar at least 1 or 2 a day for almost a decade. Our system was one of the oldest cast iron main system. They were close to and over 100yrs old. A city North of that area had that major gas situation. I have only made 1 video a couple of days after and it explained what happened. People couldn't view it for over a year. Most of the system is plastic now. The incident could of been prevented but new top management stopped the reg department from being on site

Have had alot of gas explosions in Baltimore Maryland as well in the recent years.
@kennethsrensen77062 жыл бұрын
Thats really horrible , I fell sad for those living there . I have observed that in the last few years we see more and more gas explotions all over the world . Usually they all started using gas as energy source many many years ago and this lead to many underground pipes being very old and in bad maintenace , also many old houses have bad installations too . But even brand new houses seem to suffer from this too ... So question is - Are the new installations simply being made to cheap ? ( read bad quality , money saving ) New installations set up in areas with old pipelines ect , with bad maintennace and simply being cheap as usual to save cost and thus increase profit ? Well the buyer of those houses they really do not save anything in the end as it is as usual sold as expensive as they can get away with ( thus increase Profit to their greedy pockets ) of course on the cost of safety to those who end buy it . Is this caused by NOT qualified technicians to do maintennace / installations / service ect ? ( to save money ) Or simply a combination of it all ? List could go on and on but I think you get the picture . Sadly what is so real is there is an increase of gas explotions in past few years . ( we have to go back before the 1950ties to get same amount , before safety was being improved ) Personally I can not live in a house with gas , I wont feel safe at all . Yes I now electric malfunction can be a danger too , but at least doesnt explode like this .

Blew a huge amount of the building 20 feet into the air. That had to be a lot of gas build up fast because some of it should have escaped through crevices. This is no an race comment. In a lot of undeveloped countries theft of energy is common. If someone takes the end plug off the gas service. 60 psi will roar into house. Then there is absolutely nothing they can do. Hopefully utility will arrive and shut gas off on sidewalks. Then a control vent procedure will start. No worries unit gas level goes between 5 percent to 15 percent

@@skipd9164 if they have tools to take a plug or cap off…they can shut the valve
@skipd91642 жыл бұрын
@@tjlovesrachel alot of people don't know about the different pressures that can used . Low pressure you don't need to turn service off to jump in a new piece of pipe. Intermediate, you should shut service value but a good tech can put a plug in and I've done it off the main but never in a building. High pressure, once you loosen a fitting before you get to the last turn it spins off and your screwed. I and street crew members have jumped in a hp shut off in the street at service t. If you watch a fire department putting out a fire hp is just below the presure in hose. Now back to my point. When Brazil wanted to host either WORLD cup or Olympics they need to upgrade their electric distribution network. In some areas there were hundreds of illegal hookups at poles and this was through out the network. Some people see an inside gas service and think nobody will ever know. They might drop the meter and put a bypass. FYI. If you have a meter thats read electronic devices it shows a disconnect next time it's read. If you disconnect any fitting below the regulator. Before you get to turn last thread it will shoot off and before you reach the stairs your house is full of gas and your lucky. It's when the gas is shut off at the service valve outside that you need to worry. When inside reads get to 15% you start worrying until below 5%. I have been in over a 100 situations like this and we never lost one. It wasn't until KZbin I realized what could of happened. In the 80s an 90s we never called the FD and if they came they sat in truck down the street. Protocol has drastically changed for the better. Most people don't know what presure the main in the street has.

Natural gas is a very good fuel and there is a very good supply of it. Natural gas is also a very dangerous fuel! Underground natural gas lines have in some locations been there in excess of fifty ago and a good portion of the piping is iron pipe. With all of the underground movement of the pipe creates many leaks. A lot of gas leaks are caused by companies digging for other types of underground utilities. Making natural gas usage safer for everyone is a huge task and has many areas that need help.
