Night falls on a quiet street, far from the bright lights of downtown. A woman screams, but no one is around at this time at night. A man shoves her to the ground, holding her at gunpoint and yelling at her to give him his money. The woman screams for help again, although some small part of her knows no help will come. The man raises his gun again. He’s obviously not well, probably on drugs. His trembling finger rests on the trigger. The woman quiets, and stares down the barrel of the gun. She knows her time has come. Suddenly, a hooded figure appears in the flickering streetlamp. The mugger reacts, firing three shots in the vague direction of the figure. Shaking, he backs away into an alley, forgetting about the woman for the moment. Chills tun down his back. He runs for the end of the alley, not knowing where he was going. The only thing he felt, was fear. Shaken and out of breath, the druggie turns to look back. He sees nothing. He sees black, a void, nothingness. He doesn’t understand, had he been suddenly stricken blind. He gropes around in the darkness, searching for something, anything that might prove to him that the world still existed. He stops in his tracks. Slowly, for fear of what he might see, or not see. He looks straight ahead. A pair of eyes, no pupils, no iris, no whites. Just bright circles against a dark silhouette of a hooded figure. He froze. He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t move. The eyes moved closer and closer to him, seemingly drawing him in even more. The closer the creature(as he couldn’t be sure if this thing was even human) got to him, the more the eyes brightened. So much so they began to burn, flames licking at the edges. The eyes seared into the muggers own eyes, his brain. Suddenly a clawed hand seized his neck. The man, or kid(he was only 22)didn’t fight it. He was paralyzed. He felt himself being lifted off the ground. He thought of nothing. Just sheer, unbridled, animalistic fear. He managed to choke out through the tight vise grip a single question. The only question he could think of. “W-what are y-you?” he squeaked out. The figure cocked it’s head to one side. “Fear.” With one swift clench he broke his neck and tossed the criminal to the side. His broken body lied painfully in a jumble of limbs, resting on a few garbage bags. With his dying breath the boy looked up at the figure approaching him. He wept as the figure slowly leaned down to stare at him in the face. The last thoughts of this young criminal were of absolute horror as he faded into nothingness. The figure rose. It walked toward the mugging victim. She had been watching this whole time, crying silently in a corner as she watched her attacker be mangled by this monster. She backed away as it came for her. “Please I’m begging you. Dont hurt me please,”But it suddenly stopped short. In a rare show of vulnerability, the shadow reached under its mask. The mask hissed, ever so delicately as it was removed from its head. The woman saw a face. A mans face. He looked at her, showing only the tiniest bit of emotion. She saw regret. Sadness. But the overwhelming characteristic of this brutal man who saved her, was grief.The undeniable, unforgettable face of a man who has lost everything dear to him. A few seconds passed. The mask was put back in its place. The eyes flashed. And with a whisper of the wind. He was gone. In the years to come this secretive vigilante would stalk the streets, brutally killing and sometimes even torturing criminals. No one knew why he did this but him. He did this for a reason. He did this for a young woman years ago. A young woman that was in the same trouble as many of the people he would protect. A young woman that he was too late to save. Some would praise him as a hero. Some would condemn his actions. All feared him. He came to be known by many different names. But the one most remember him by is the one he earned on that quiet and dark street. Always fear, The Shadow. (This is just a little story I wrote, thought of it when I was listening to this song. Idk if it’s good or not, just wanted to write what i was thinking down)
