When I got back into flight sims I started with the Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X, after that I swapped to the T16000M flight pack and it was a night and day switch. Now I have Thrustmasters S Tier HOTAS the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog. This HOTAS isn’t cheap but Is it worth it or are you better off spending less for your Microsoft flight simulator 2020 setup.

I've loved my Warthog HOTAS over the past year and a half. It's far from perfect stock, especially the stick. The spring is too stiff and the center detent makes it crap for desktop use as is. The best thing to do is mount it centrally between your legs and add a 20-150mm extension and the level of precision you get out of the stick goes way up, getting better with the longer the extension you go, and it feels much more ergonomic. I currently run a 150mm extension with a low desk mount and I would never go back to using the Warthog HOTAS without an extension.
@ColinDyckes

Same here. A 150mm extension removes the 'stiction' and totally transforms the Warthog stick.

The TM Warthog is great till a cable on the inside breaks for no reason and you open it and see how bad and cheaply its made. I have it and had so many problems. I changed the stick base, added an arduino to the throttle and replace the slew stick. The value is like 90% for the external haptic and 10% for the electronics. The weight is only due to stretegicly placed steel plates and averything else is cheap plastic. I now own it for like 6 years. Its a great hotas put thes cheaped out to much on the quallity. The wires are so flimsy and just snap off

Although if you want to go real deal space sim combat, you go HOSAS rather than HOTAS, the agility and response is just unmatched.

CatalystDestiny The heck is a HOSAS?? Ah got it... Stick and Stick 😆. I have a couple thrustmasters around, but it never appealed me. I like the feel of a throttle and use the thumbs for vectoring, plus it matches the cockpit virtual hands. I was interested in a 3d mouse, but they are too difficult to config.
@CatalystDestiny
@CatalystDestiny 4 жыл бұрын
@@Shadow__133 Yeah HOSAS is stick/stick. It's overwhelmingly superior to throttle in space sim combat because unlike an atmosphere flight model in space it's 6 degrees of freedom, so the second stick is used to control thrusters. What this allows you to do is have direct pinpoint thrust control on your offhand from multiple vectors all on the instant response of the stick. A throttle even with a thumbstick for thrusters still limits you greatly for how fast you can slide the throttle, compared to HOSAS users who just have all of their maneuvering from every angle all on the instant response of dual sticks.

This is my 2nd generation Thrustmaster HOTAS. I loved them both after putting up with plastic stuff before that. If you can afford it, don’t hesitate! Also look at the all metal Thrustmaster TPR rudder pedals that are very adjustable and have Hall sensors too. My favorite by far after having lots of plastic ones before it.

Thanks for this as I think you have summed it up perfectly. I’ve only just got my Wartthog and am just playing around (Elite Dangerous & MS Flight Sim) and the quality of the build is so impressive as well as the precision. Good shout out about the need for pedals also, but that does add to the immersion for me. But, of course, also adds to the cost. It is a lot of money to spend, but when I considered the options, if you do have the money, then this surely has to be THE HOTAS. I couldn’t be more impressed even after using it just for a couple of days.

I’ve had mine for 5 years and it’s as close to the full scale A-10 you can get. I worked on them for several years. The buttons are a tiny bit harder to push on the TM. You can always tell a new button on the A-10 when it makes a louder click. I have a new analog slew sensor from Delta electronics order to replace the one on the TM. One thing I did program on the throttle side is the sliding lever. I use it for zoom views. Real good for precision zooming of the views. Yeah it’s pricey but it should last a long time. If I recall you can get a stick for it that is modeled after the F-18 and F-16 about $200 each if there’s money burning in your pocket.

As good as the Warthog is, the annoying thing is the stiction when trying to move the stick the slightest amount, and that very strong center 'detent'. I bought a Virpil base with extension and it complements the Warthog beautifully. It is so smooth and you have MM accuracy no matter where you are in the travel zone. Makes formation flying, aerial refueling and weapon delivery a breeze. And that is without adjusting the sensitivity curves in DCS.

To answer your "question" why the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X has this step thing. If you played Elite Dangerous you know you can fly backward and forward. And so that you are able to have a Point of 0% Throttle while flying. This is coming in really handy when you are doing combat

X56 Rhino and Warthog HOTAS are the best possible choices. The problem is that DCS world tries to mimic the F14, F16, F18, A10 thunderbolt, and a bunch of other fighters as well as European models. The A10 thunderbolt has the same joystick as the F-16 but not the same throttle. The F 18 doesn’t share the same joystick or throttle as either of the other two. The F 14 doesn’t share the same joystick and throttle of any of the others either. When you look forward: the F 35 and F 22 don’t share joysticks or throttles with any of the others. I would say the X56 is best because it has so many joysticks/high hats/buttons that it’s flexible for the future even though it’s build quality isn’t as good as the warthog. The X56 has a twist stick and can also be redundant with the Logitech G pedals. Makes taxiing easier.

I got the Warthog a couple of months ago because my 5 year old cheap madcatz stick finally packed in. The game I play, Star Citizen, doesn't like switches for inputs, it needs buttons or you find yourself having to quickly flick the switch on and off again to make it work. What I ended up doing was buying a half dozen buttons from ebay and 3D printing a button box that is secured to the throttle box using the 2 pre-existing screws on the lower part of the box. I was going to just change out the switches for buttons completely but Thrustmaster has the switches soldered into 1 PCB so it was much easier to just solder wires on to the prongs of the switches. Also, now I still have the use of the switches if I need them in certain games but for now, this is ideal

Having recently purchased a new Warthog HOTAS from TM I have been extremely disappointed with half of the two piece rig. The throttle system is solid from top to bottom with it’s mostly metal construction. I even bought an upgraded joystick controller to replace that little nub that lies under the middle finger. Highly recommend it. Now the joystick... First, though solidly built, quality control is lacking as after 3 months after purchase, the #5 button started acting up and then just quit working. Plus the grip rocked on the stem forward and back and no amount of tightening the screws completely resolved it. The Warthog comes with a 2 yr warranty so I reached out, explained my issues and their reply was to send a picture of the serial number, a copy of the receipt and a video showing the issue. After complying, I was approved for repairs with a shipping label. Living in CA I had to ship it to Canada for this process. It took over a month to get it back. Now just under a year after purchase, the tension springs attached to the plastic gimbal are binding and “popping” when I work the stick aggressively or with finesse. Also the rocking is coming back and with it an added twist to the stick on the mount that should not be there. Now I have to send it back again for repair and wait another 5 weeks to enjoy game play. For the cost of the Warthog, I anticipated having a refurbished stick sent as I send in the faulty rig. But I guess the premium price doesn’t necessarily equate to premium service. A friend bought the Virpil Warbird base and put his TM F16 grip on it instead and loves it. Perhaps that should be my solution as well as it’s gimbal is aluminum instead of molded plastic.

for the record, that notch in the Thrustmaster Tflight is supposed to be fore reverse thrust in things that support that. It is really easy to disable though if you take the bottom panel off the throttle, you can simple remove the plastic track that causes that notch to be there.

One thing that sort of aggravates me is that TM is selling an F-16C Viper H.O.T.A.S (Warthog H.O.T.A.S with an F-16C grip) and an F-14C grip to put on a Warthog H.O.T.A.S. Truth be told, the F-16C grip is actually identical to the grip actually used in the A-10A and and -C. The grips in all three airplanes are the same grip. I have the A-10A, -C, -CII, and the F-16C Viper in DCS, and they all use the same stick. The F-18 stick is different, so TM sells the grip for the F-18 to go on the Warthog base. Don’t get suckered by TM’s F-16C Viper add-on stick. It’s a Warthog stick. No need to buy both.
@RaXXha
@RaXXha 4 жыл бұрын
Afaik the F-16C stick and A-10C stick is the same stick, when they upgraded the hotas in the A-10 they decided to use the same stick as was being used in the F-16. So the standalone F-16 stick is mainly aimed at those who initially purchased the F/A-18 stick.

The Warthog joystick is really, really good. Very well built, very responsive and smooth, and lots of buttons. It doesn't have a twist axis, but i personally use rudder pedals. Even so, this lack of yaw does make the joystick unusable for me in Elite Dangerous. The Warthog throttle... meh. The metal chassis is nice, but the throttle levers themselves are blocky plastic, albeit sturdy plastic. Maybe that's how they are on the real thing (since it's meant to be a replica of a real A-10 throttle), but it's not very nice compared to the full metal build of the joystick. And while the throttle does have plenty of buttons, their use is limited for general use somewhat because a lot of them are latching. So a 3 position switch will be limited to only one function, or maybe two functions that cannot be used together, rather than two completely independent functions had the button not been latching. Still, the scripting software you can use does make up for this.

I've had that problem as well...it's what happens when your focus becomes saving money. Now, I tend to ask myself 'what is the reasonable level of quality can accept?' then find something that matches those expectations, so ultimately cost becomes a secondary concern. If you simply can't afford that level of quality then don't buy it.

I have the Warthog, no remorse, but at the time it was the only decent HOTAS available due to supply chain issues because of COVID-19 in china. Some benefits that you have not mentioned. The throttle can be split with a switch so one for each engine. With the detachable stick you can get extensions, putting the base plate on the floor between your legs stick extension, buy separately, connects to the stick and you have full function. My biggest issue is that my hands must be too small, especially with the throttle as I cannot easily reach the buttons. Yes this is a great joystick DCS has automatic mapping for a number of planes to this set up. However I do find my old Saitek/Logitech X56 Rhino fitted me better, but the build quality is junk, especially compared to the Warthog. Now all I will want is a copy of Cougar panels, VR set including gloves.....

My stick was bricked and needed a new PCB as well and the illumination for Flow L has never worked.Still the best out there IMO ,but not infallible. 'Stiction' is a well documented issue but I've been lucky so far and have had my 'Hog for years. I would love to try a Virpil out. Also as you pointed out rudder pedals are a must and changing up from a X52 and MSFF2 as I did takes a bit of getting used to,but adds to the realism.

The grip itself isn't steel. That's injection molded zamak, or mostly zinc. That is why the grip is so incredibly heavy compared to aluminium sticks, and isn't as strong either. This weight requires a much harsher centering spring that would otherwise be required, and that puts emphasis on the center bump. When you transition from pulling stick forward to back, you'll feel that midpoint THUNK a lot more than on, say, CH Products sticks. Be gentle with that grip: there's a long history of sheared stems in the Cougar/Warthog community. It's just not in the same tier of durability as CH Products or especially VKB and Virpil.

The issue I suffered initially due to my lack of piloting did hinder my ability to setup the HOTAS Warthog Gear. I have the Throttle, Joystick and Rudders. Setup is easy, they are extremely solid and will be with you for a long time. If you are learning to fly at the same time, do not try and load a heap of functions, as you will not remember the configuration as you are trying to take off, cruise and land. In the C172 X-Plane 12 or MSFS 2020 start with your throttle setup, the (#1) Slide as your mixture and flaps. These are all you need in the early stages of your flight sim journey. .....Enjoy

This looks amazing, I’ve wanted one for years. But. It’s only the exact-ish copy if you’re flying an A-10. As soon as you decide to fly say, a spitfire, it’s just as inaccurate 1-1 as a saitek. The quality looks off the chain though. If you literally only fly A-10’s, it looks near essential.

I have the exact same set up as you, the Warthog is just GREAT, there is no drift or slack to it and overall feels quite robust. The pedals tho, feel a little bit cheap even if they cost like a good 100$ they feel cheap, and not precise at all, maybe in the future I'll upgrade to the "new" Thrustmaster TPR Pedals they are expensive but I think it will be a great thing to buy. Also do you use some sort of Stand or something to put them? I'm using a Wheel Stand Pro And it's great, also weights a ton

Just a few marks to clear up Yes, much of it is steel - where it doesn't matter. The most important part, the gimbal, is cheap plastic. The least important part, the grip, which even in original fighter jets is resin, is heavy steel. It moves even with that weight. Quality issues on many of the switches. If you go the high quality route go Virpil. If you go the cheapo route go Logitech. If you want to spend money for poor quality, go Thrustmaster. And yes, I do own a warthog. I also own a Cougar. Stay away from this if you're really looking for quality.

Soooo I saw this on sale and I knew I had to have it. Like you, I have the HOTAS4 (PS4 version) first But I wanted something that could be mounted separately and the link cable on the HOTAS4 was surprisingly short. So the Warthog HOTAS arrived. Then I realised, it didn't have the twist or the rudder buttons on the throttle like the HOTAS4, soooo out came the credit card and for a bigger wham this time, the Pendulum Rudder arrived. Now I have the distinct joy of trying to find a workaround to switch between my driving pedals and the rudder pedals. First world problems ;)

It's totally worth it. You can always get a cheap WMR headset for around $200 if I remember correctly, or you can step up to a Rift S or Quest with Quest link for $400. I have a Quest myself and generally don't have any issues with it on PC. I hadn't really considered it myself, but my parents got it for me for Christmas and I was blown away with how fantastic it was. It's great for sims, but there are also games like Boneworks that offer gameplay like nothing else you've ever played. I seriously cannot recommend it enough.

There is a cheaper alternative to VR - TrackIR or FaceTrackNoIR or FreeTrack - head tracking while still using your monitor. It gives you all the advantages of VR in terms of usabilit, that you can simply look in the cockpit, better see the ground in VFR flights be better oriented in combat sims and in Star Citizen you even could use it for aiming. And all you need to try it is a simple webvam with face tracking, but IR LEDs are much better. But obviously the immersion is nowhere near as good as with VR. But this is much better for longer gaming sessions, because VR is very tiring. Oh, and as you can see, James must be using head tracking because he has a PS3 Eye on his monitor, very popular for its high refresh rate.

@@jacekjagosz You forgot the biggest upside to tracking over VR, not knocking over your drink lol. But seriously sometimes it's nice to be able to use your hands. Hey Major, Thanks for the video I am looking into getting my first HOTAS and the Warthog is really looking appealing to me. I was just curious in your professional opinion is this not a good stick because it doesn't have a twist stick? Is this necessary for a better experience? Should I look for a stick with twist? I am planning to play Star Wars Squadrons with it. Also Im hearing some people are disappointed with the quality due to some components being made at plastic? Did you feel disappointed in this? Anyone who has some input feel free to chime in! Thanks for your help fam!
@dinamitemaster
@dinamitemaster 4 жыл бұрын
Concerning the twist, the stick not having it was probably an intentional decision for several reasons: a) the real Warthog stick (or any other plane stick for that matter) doesn't have twist on it; b) the twist rudder is less accurate than pedals since you usually twist the stick a bit when you move it around; c) when you drop this kind of money on a HOTAS most people will get the pedals for the full experience anyway. In my opinion having twist on this stick would make it worse because it would mess with the solid feel of it. Of course, this means you pretty much need pedals alongside, unless you are happy with binding the rudder to buttons or something. This HOTAS is really going more for the simulation audience. That's not to say you can't use it for other stuff, I also play Elite Dangerous with it and I couldn't be happier, but it really shines with more hardcore/realistic games. In more arcade-y titles you might actually be at a slight disadvantage versus someone with an X52 for example, since they can swing that thing around much faster since it's so light and plasticky. Concerning the plastic components, the only real place where I think this is a problem is the stick base; the inside is mostly plastic and some people (including me) have had problems with the gimbal not travelling as smoothly as it should and sticking a bit when holding the stick off center, which is quite annoying. Can be solved by taking it apart and regreasing it though, but many think that this kind of problem on a 500+ dollar stick is unacceptable. I also managed to break my base by twisting the stick too hard when taking off an extension, so that's something to watch out for (it was fixable but a pain in the ass). The rest of the stick and throttle feels very well made and sturdy though. The solution many go with (and which I went with as well) is to buy an aftermarket base (something from Virpil for example), which is night and day better and uses all metal insides. However, that's another couple hundred dollars added to the price so you might as well buy a complete setup from one of these smaller manufacturers at that point. In a nutshell, despite a couple issues this is by far the best mainstream stick available IMO and the only way to get better quality is to go for boutique brands, which of course come with a considerable price jump.

The lack of a twist axis on the Warthog stick is a dealbreaker for me. I'm not a fan of rudder pedals nor of the workarounds that place the yaw axis on the throttle. I went for Virpil instead. I have their V2 throttle and Constellation Alpha joystick. In my opinion, they're much better than the Warthog, especially for space sims. They're pricy though.

I love the fact that you are so in love with you Thrust Master but… I think you’re gonna find that you need to amend your comments as to the composition of the stick and rudder… Stick a magnet on a stick and stick another magnet on the throttle I don’t mean the throttlebody I mean the throttle and tell me is it magnetic or not and if it’s not then it is pure stainless steel or it’s not ferrous at all. So fracking what that it’s pot metal...It’s got the weight and I feel that you want and that’s all that counts. Welcome aboard! Chas

HAHA I've had an idea that i think is kind of cool, a cover plate for an aio. You know when you have to run the aio wires between the thumbscrew area and up around the vrm in order to hide the cables the best you can. What if you printed a cover plate that friction mounted on the screws that hold the aio down? Bam no more wires showing and if you wanted you could even leave the top empty, this would allow for easy clearance of pump housing and if someone wanted to get smancy, they could cut a piece of white plexi and attach it to that, add a little bit of rgb and BAM

They havent made any new HOTAS. The top three in 2014 are still the top 3. One would think companies would make a new generation of them for MSFS2020 and Star Citizen. I still have the Saitek X-52 Pro. Because the throttle has a LED screen. The Joystick has a green lit SAFE cover you can flip open with your thumb and the light turns red with a target button with a hand protector, that no other joystick in the market has that. As far as I know its considered the third best HOTAS, with the X-56 being better, more buttons and the top one being the Warthog. But none of them look as pretty as the X-52 Pro.

The problem with this kind of reviews is that most hardware reviewers have little clue on such specialized niche market hardware. This hotas is a pretty antique and mediocre hotas in 2021, it's only perceived as more than that because of (no longer accurate) brand recognition. There are 3 high end brands in this market : Virpil, Vkb, and Winwing. They have better hardware than TM at this point. Out of these 3 however, Vkb has yet to release their throttle hardware so you can't get a complete hotas from them but their sticks (and the bases) blows anything TM have out of water. TM warthog is as antiquated in features as CH hotas on this market by this time.
