Make a Camera Handle for Skateboarding without Tools!

Looking to buy a handle for your camera? Before you do, check out this D.I.Y. camera handle that can be made without using tools. This handle will work with most small cameras and dslrs. Using a 1/4" bolt, this handle attaches to the tripod mount on the bottom of most camera. The metal build keeps the camera steady unlike plastic, which flexes side to side.
Start by measuring from the back of your camera to the tripod mount and then the height. This is how you will know which size of L bracket to get. Its best to leave about 2 inches from the top of the handle and the top of your camera. I cut my L brackets before I made this video but its not a must.
I added a weight at the bottom to help stabilize the camera more. I used a novelty paper weight; although ankle weights and even a roll of coins would work.
Shot on a panasonic gs-150 and a vx1000.

What is the paper weight for?
It works as a counter balance, making the camera easy to tilt up. It also keep the camera steadier.
What is the electrical tape for?
Vinyl tape will keep the handle from scratching.

just made one. used 8 inch by 1 and 1/4 inch L joints. works great since you can get the camera lower to the ground for skating. cost me $13 for everything at a lowe's. could be much cheaper somewhere else but i don't have the patience to search. since everything is made out of stainless steel, it is pretty sturdy and had a good amount of weight and no need to attach more weight. mounting a nikon 5200 dslr. i have seen reviews of a $30 handle that have said that its flimsy and unstable but this does the charm and is built tough for $13.

@brammetjeskate vx's are usually heavier on the back because of the batteries, which makes it easier to tilt the camera up; without the weight on this handle its heavier on the front. also makes the footage turn out less shaky.

I used wing nuts which are meant to be hand tightened. I've been using the handle over 2 years now and not a single problem.

Yes. I have a gripped t2i and it fits if you buy 8 inch L braces.

@102robertini i have a gripped t2i now so i made another handle with larger L brackets and it works fine. if I had the 5d i would play it safe and spend the money on a handle that uses the tripod mount and shoe mount to keep it secure.

I think it would cost about $30 to buy everything, but some people have said they paid $15. The bike grip is the most expensive piece. I picked up a used one for free at a bike shop.

Its an Opteka baby death. You should look for a camera with 37mm filter threads, which would be infront of the lens. You also want a camera that has full manual control, so if you're on a budget then I would look on Amazon or ebay for something.

@CJ33D the bottom of the camera has a tripod mount, I used a 1/4 bolt which is the same size as the threads for a tripod mount. I bolt the handle handle just like the x-grips do.

electrical tape keeps the camera in place so it doesnt turn sideways while you're filming. also it prevents the metal bracket from scratching your minty camera.

some advice, its not a good idea to hand tighten those bolts holding the L brackets together. if they come loose then you're going to have some camera problems

it doesnt have to be exact, but I would say around 1 pound. what you'll be trying to do is have the camera tilt up when you're holding it by the handle.

I did this but made it a little bigger to fit a portable floodlight mounted ontop and a permanently fixed case to hold an old iPhone so I could see what I was doing with the gopro app
