This magnet closure is my favourite type of closure. Been using this type of double cap magnetic closure for several years. Really smart design. 😊

I think I'm really going to have to try these out. I'm always concerned with using a strong snap on a thin wallet specifically because I think one day I'm going to crack a cheap card closing the wallet with too much force.

I resisted using magnetic snaps until I found these rivet back type. Been using only them since. They are so flat and really strong. The dimple and the small depression make the snap line up perfectly and give that tiny extra magnetic force. Flat is KING!

Thanks for the tips. My own (anecdotal) tip on canker sores: Let it air dry, gently rub a wet styptic pen on it (it will sting for a moment, of course, but not long), let sit for about 30 seconds, and rinse. I've found that this prevents it from getting bigger and helps with the pain. I hope that helps!

Hi Eric, after being away from saddlery repairs for 31 years I am finally dipping my toes back into the trade. I am really enjoying going back and watching your videos to help me remember and learn new ways. I always tacked my leather together prior to sewing and now will either use a cement or tape to do so. This brings me to the question of which type Barge cement would you recommend? (Or do you have another you favour?) Looking forward to your opinion... Cheers...Freddie

Oh man. This is why I messed up and ordered small rivets by mistake! Can't wait to make some of these. I know a few people who would like them.

I was literately about to say the same thing! I ordered rivets and they were wayyyy smaller than I was expecting and didn't want to deal with the hassle of making a return. I also have some of the magnets and have been using them already. They hold VERY strong to the leather even after drilling 2 holes I needed a lot of plier action to get one off of something

Off topic, but I am surprised you didn't do leather drawer pulls (maybe even marbled) instead of wooden knobs in your new kitchen build.

Honest question: why is your first cut so much bigger than what you need for the pattern? To a newbie like me, it seems needlessly wasteful.

Hi Michael 👋🏾. Since you are new to leather crafting, I get how this can be confusing. Simply, its a preference. But it also can depend upon the particular pattern you are cutting. As you learn the necessary basics, you can develop your own style by finding what works for you. I have seen some crafters cut the actual pattern pieces as they go and others like Eric give a little room for adjustments. Leather crafting has a few set rules that a lot of people overlook. But that is what is the difference between crappy and flawless work. My style is neat edges. That requires a lot of detailed work like beveling edges, skiving and sometimes painting edges. Others don't care so edges are exposed. I prefer colors but occasionally Eric's style of raw veg tan. The style Eric uses is considered - minimalist. I'm more the designer high end style like Louis Vuitton, Coach. I avoid so-called leather crafters that sell patterns using pre-punched holes. To me its very cheap looking UNLESS you are doing lace work. But pre-punched holes for general sewing 😢reminds me too much of what you do at camp. Great for beginners but not when you want to make something to sell. If you truly want to get into leather work, its up to you what you want your end product to look like. No matter what, you have to figure out what works for you.

does the magnet in the wallet cause issues with the credit card strips? I was thinking about this too but was trying to see if it would ruin cards....

What size thread and needles where you using there? I've had no luck with the braided maine thread. I have some 0.030 and all I've tried the 517-1 Osborne needles and it just doesn't want to slide over the head of the needle to make the locking knot.

What brand of tape is it? I reckon joyco double tape isn't strong enough for leathercrafting.

You could punch the rivet holes smaller, so the hole grips the post better....YMMV...

Can I use copper rivets? Do I need a washer for copper rivet?
@Corter
@Corter Жыл бұрын
solid copper rivets would be tricky unless you could find very, very tiny ones - a standard rivet and bur would be too big for the back thumb slider to work, it would make that opening too small. However the pattern comes with the vector file so you could always make it bigger to accommodate :) I don't think a leather washer would be necessary

That's a super cool piece! I'm having back surgery in a few days so I let myself run out of leather since I wont be able to use it anyway, but I would love to make one of these when I'm healed. Thanks for your videos I've learned a lot from them and love to watch!

Hi Eric. Killer design! Can’t wait to make one. Speaking of rivets, have you ever tried « bubble rivets »? The male part of these rivets show through the female part! Takes some practice to set them right, but they are a step up, look-wise!
