This comparative demo is really helpful and grounded- it depicts the common mistakes anyone can make and how to steer it better on the next round of watercolor!

Very refreshing to see honest appraisal of mistakes and what to avoid. Very useful indeed as many artists never show failures.... and they must have them. Much appreciated.

It takes a lot of courage to show one's mistakes and the over-working of a painting . . . but . . . oh, so helpful to see a master painter at work and willing to share errors. Thank you. It helps me forge ahead and try to learn from what went wrong when I make those problem areas surface, much to my consternation.

I'd like to fail in my watercolors like you... if you knew my mistakes, you'd judge your mistakes more leniently, that's for sure. In any case, thank you very much for the demonstration, your mastery and, if that wasn't enough, your humility.

Thank you very much for this invaluable lesson Sir. When you applied white to get that dusty look, in first painting, my heart sank. But how you came out of it was amazing. Probably the first painting would have been as good as second, had you not deliberately applied whites in access just to show us what not to do. Its very selfless of you. Thank you once again.

Your journey and honesty with these 2 have been very helpful in my journey as a beginner in the loose style. I definitely learned a lot and was still we watch this video. Thank you so much. As a suggestion, perhaps have a musical instrumental soundtrack in the background at very low volume...some white noise as you color in white paper. Thank you and aloha from Hawaii🤙🏼🌈

I like both of them but I do get your points very well of some mistakes you can make - which I have done, especially with too much white to "save the painting". Learned a lot. Is that a metal palette you use and do you find they work better?
@TimWilmot4 жыл бұрын
Yes is metal and I find it best from Holbein

Hey Tim, there's no rules in painting, I know plenty of professional watercolorists who work the ir paintings to death with gouache, skrubbing out etc. until they get what they want. However I do understand that you prefer to paint in a more alla prema way. Everyone is different in the way they work and there's nothing wrong with the way you did the first painting, both are equally as good.
@TimWilmot3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there's room for everyone. I agree with you

One thing that is true to nature in the reference photo is the sky colo[u]r. I am sitting in shade on a clear noontime, near Hollister, central California, USA. The sky in the ref. on my tablet precisely matches the sky I see behind the low mountains. In photos, the clear blue sky is all too often rendered with far too much chroma, and shifted toward purple.
