Great idea, nice to see something done in a different way.

This is an excellent idea, and the video itself was very well done. The sketch on the board illustrated the concept and made it easy to understand.

If you could have seen how much time I just spent making a feather board. I look forward to making some of these tomorrow. I only found this because I was trying to figure out how to use a push stick with a vertical feather board. Two birds with one stone. Thank you, great tips.

I love it!! I've had it in the CMS router table but didn't think of making that style in wood.

I happen to have some 1/2" Baltic birch ply right now. Time to go home and make some hold downs.

For structural engineers out there, if your structural analysis program does not offer spring restraints -- the open source Frame3DD would be an example -- you can model in your own springs by configuring them in exactly the same way.

Yes, I like it. I know it doesn’t help with kickback as finger types would. But I’ve never liked those. Plus, for me anyway, I often need to pull my work back out of a cut for those that don’t need to be ripped all the way. Thanks for the video!

Great alternative to those crazy expensive Jesse hold-down doohickeys! 😀

Very cool design. Not so sure they'd make great stocking stuffers ;) Is there any particular woods that work better or worse for this?
@popularwoodworking6 жыл бұрын
While Zane is using high-quality plywood, hardwoods are certainly a good option. You want to pick something with consistent graining and few knots or imperfections. The strength is in the spring and softer woods (pine) won't have as much spring to them.

I use a RAS, as my fence is simply held in place by friction and my hold down is clamped to the fence then I'm wondering how good of a 'hold down' it woukld be. I suppose only as good as the 'hold' that the fence has on the table. But a nice idea.

Great video and great idea. What dimensions of the starting rectangle board do you find the most versatile if I was only going to make one of these?
@popularwoodworking5 жыл бұрын
It's truly dependent on the fence used on your router table. Where the jig can mount will determine some of the width, but height is usually 3" to 4", again in relation to your fence. If you have a taller fence, you'll need a taller jig.

Another great video - thank you. Does the original Roger Cliffe offering pre-date Sommerfelds Unique Featherguard?
@popularwoodworking6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe it does. But isn't it great that woodworkers can share great ideas! ;0)

Hey Zane, nice pressure plate.... but.... it doesn't have the anti-kickback properties of "standard" featherboards ?? I personally use sections of 4" plastic pipe (in the shape of a "C" ) to give me the same result (also with no anti-kickback) as your design .. Thanks for the idea tho, I like ideas like this & file 'em away in the noggin.... ye never know.. 😂
@popularwoodworking6 жыл бұрын
Peter, good point. Featherboards don't offer the anti-kickback feature, and depending on the type of work being done it's worth considering using a different hold down. Thanks! - PW
