I had to watch this twice , thinking “surely the binding isn’t empty, how did she fill it” but alas, it’s empty. I can’t live with that, sorry. I will continue to leave a 3” strip of extra batting around the top and then fold the backing over the front by 3.25 inches, pin & stitch. You can still miter the corners. Love the idea of this though

I have seen one that did, I love it but can't find it again. I actually watched this one to see if it had batting and then saw your question. My issue is getting the batting smoothed back out once you turn it, that's what I'm trying to find a technique for....
@dotjohnson4247
@dotjohnson4247 Жыл бұрын
You would have to play with the measurements for the backing fabric...but make your quilt top bigger - like add a 3" border...add your batting to the edge of the border. Then sew the backing to the front with a deep seam - like an inch seam - I think your box in the corner would be one inch to match your seam... Miter your corners. Turn. You would end up with a 2" border and a 1" binding that has batting. You would just need to do some figuring about how much bigger your backing fabric has to be - maybe only 1.5"?
@dcwatashi
@dcwatashi Жыл бұрын
@@dotjohnson4247 that’s what I am trying to figure out. Because I don’t have enough backing, so I’m going to sew extra fabric onto the back of my quilt, and somehow fold it over but I want the batting to be in that binding
@cherylanon5791
@cherylanon5791 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I would use this technique for a quilt since there is no batting in between the folded over layers of binding & backing, and there's no quilt stitches throughout the body of quilt. Perhaps it would be nice for a table runner or placemats. But those 5" borders would feel flimsy with no batting, and the backing with no quilting on it seems strange.

I want you all to know that if you use 2 flannel fabrics for the front and back, you can assemble the blanket--just as Jenny does here but without the quilting--and when it's all put together, quilt the two non-binding flannel layers together. I do it all the time for beautiful small baby quilts and have done twin-size as well. The flannel "sticks" together so nicely , there's no problem with shifting. I always press the two fabrics together---WHEN STILL INSIDE-OUT, BEFORE turning the blanket right-sides out. Turn right-sides out, smooth the two layers together with your hands. I always do the smoothing on my ironing board and iron as I smooth. And I always start smoothing and pressing on the EDGE OPPOSITE the edge with the opening. This works nicely for getting the opening nice and tucked in. I then "quilt" the blanket---not the binding--and finish with a pretty decorative stitch all the way around on the binding where the binding meets the blanket. The blankets look so "finished" with the quilting. (I call my finished goods "blankets," not "quilts" because some people are such sticklers insisting that "quilts" always have batting.) Besides looking really good, these two-layer blankets are light weight, which is nice: the flannel is so wrap-able around an infant or toddler. And, for bigger kids, the two layers of flannel makes a nice light weight blanket for Arizona summers.

@Laurie Larrison: Hi, Laurie, Jenny hasn't answered my question re the size of the backing. Maybe you can help. She said that the backing needs to be 10" larger than the quilt. Well, 10" larger in length and 10" larger in width? Just saying 10" doesn't make sense. Anyway, I hope you don't mind, but she wasn't clear and she didn't reply to my question. Since you have been sewing for 56 years and have made a few quilts, maybe you can answer my question. I would really appreciate it. Thanks and have a good day. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

@@olgachanachowicz2861 Yes. 10” larger in both directions, bc you’ll need the flange on all four sides. So that will be 5” larger on each side, but when the quilt is finished, it will be about 2 1/2” larger on each side bc that extra fabric must cover the back, as well as the front. I'm about to finish a duvet cover. For the backing I'm making it sandwich style - as you do for pillow covers, which should make it so much easier to put the duvet inside. I always make ties for the corners and the middles of the sides so the duvet doesn't move around. Often I'll use the "ties" that come with fabric bundles as they don't shred.

That’s beautiful. I create self binding by not trimming off the excess backing from the quilt sandwich after I finish quilting, I trim only the batting, making it even or maybe a 1/2” past the quilt top. I then trim the backing to about 1” all around. Then fold it halfway in on itself then fold over onto the front of the quilt and top stitch in place. Not the best protected edge, but it looks like regular binding from the front and is super fast.

Jenny, you are do fun to watch. And so creative! I'm wondering if I could add a border before quilting, leave 1/2" unquilted all the way around. Then leave an inch of batting all around that is larger than the quilt top. Id make the backing only 2.5" larger than the top for a narrower binding. Then I could attach the backing to the unquilted edge of the top border. When I turn it right side out, Hopefully my border and binding would have batting to the edge of the quilt. I might need to try it on a simple table topper or baby quilt first. Anyone tried something similar? This is such a great idea, but I'm missing the batting under that wider binding.

Nope, not the way Jenny put this one together. If you want the backing attached to the quilt top and batting you will need to go back and quilt as desired or tie the three layers together.

Same. I thought that there has to be another way other than binding (having just finished one and had to fix half a dozen spots where it didn't catch the back binding.... grrr... and thought a self binding like they do on placemats would be just the ticket!

It has to be both width and length or you won’t have any binding on the side you didn’t make bigger. Hope this explanation here helps. By making it 10” larger it gives you 5” for each side and once folded you have a 2.5” binding edge. If you do 5” you will have 2.5” on each side and only 1.25” binding edge if you follow what I’m saying. Basically you want the backing to be a total of 4 times the width of the binding edge you want. Example: 4 x 2.5”= 10” larger 4 x 1” = 4” larger

Love this tutorial Jenny. I like the idea that the binding isn't stuffed with the batting so that it drapes like a blanket and could see this working well in some style bed quilts. Also could see adding the batting and then adding the backing. Also am interested in the way that this whole thing can be quilted once the backing and binding are attached. With an extra wide binding, a person could get creative with the quilt design in the border!

Yes, it will work on rectangles as well as squares. The demo quilt is a rectangle. All you have to is add 10” to both the length and width of the quilt. 41” x 57.5” needs a backing piece that is 51” x 67.5” 8” x 10” needs 18” x 20”

I just finished making a sample of this to see if I liked it and if I was capable. I have a quilt cover finished for my son and I’m trying different bindings to find the easiest and best looking finished one. This binding is the easiest and best looking of 3 I have tried. However, I really don’t like it being so wide and floppy. Would it be possible if I made it using only an additional 5 inches extra fabric instead of the 10 inches or would it not come out right smaller? Thanks so much for this video!!!

The 1st self binding baby blanket that I made I didn't put the straight edge on folded side. I then cut the corners. When I turned it right sides out I realized my mistake. It would have made a great chair cushion cover. Lesson learned. 😊

Seems like it's more work than just regular binding, and it certainly uses a lot more fabric. Also, the second backing isn't secured with quilting, so the quilt will be just a big saggy mess. I don't see any reason to do this instead of binding. And there's no batting in the second 'border' created by the 2nd backing. Nothing except the pressing is holding it in place - you'd have to press it after every washing.
