This is the Fifth episode of How to Terrarium. In this episode I will teach EVERYTHING you need to know in order to make a “Ship-In-A-Bottle” Terrarium. The “Ship-In-A-Bottle” terrarium is an original idea that I came up with a few weeks ago. I am really excited to share this episode with you! :)
In this demonstration I am using tropical plants and tropical soil, other than the liverwort and mosses. If you really want you can substitute for native materials, but you will see the best results with tropical plants.
Difficultly Level: Expert
This is a highly meticulous terrarium build. It may take a long time to get plants just right and working through the narrow neck of a bottle isn't exactly easy. Use the right tools and be patient when making this terrarium.
Put your terrarium in a partially lit area, such as a windowsill or window adjacent shelf and enjoy!

Ship in a bottle terrarium is an absolutely great idea. When it comes to cleaning the opening a long brush would work wonders for this project. I can not wait to get started making some of your great ideas, what a terrific hobby.

So does it not matter if the roots grow into the false bottom on any of these terrariums? I have a fishbowl that has a lid, (but not a complete seal) & can't decide if I should make a terrarium, water terrarium or just plant a plant to two in it.
@SerpaDesign
@SerpaDesign 8 жыл бұрын
The false bottom is meant to keep the soil separate from any standing water. Roots inevitably grow into the water and in most cases the plants don't care. A water terrarium would be cool IMO.

Hey! I'm planning to make my own terrarium but my problem is, I don't see springtails near my area, and I don't even know if springtails exists in our country (Philippines). Is it really necessary to put springtails in a terrarium? Thanks :D
@SerpaDesign
@SerpaDesign 8 жыл бұрын
You don't have to put springtails in, but they help cure common issues such as mold, algae, etc. Plus they aid in creating a natural decomposition cycle which keeps you terrarium clean and fertilizes the plants. They are also found worldwide. You should be able to find some if you look hard enough.

I think I know the reason this set up didn't go as expected. The bottle is at an angle and the condensation runs to the bottom side. The result was that the plants on the bottom half drown and the plants on the top half dry out. To remedy this, if it was the problem, make the bottom half higher than the top half.

If you're talking about the color, that's a wood stain. He names it in the video at that part. If you're talking about the glue he applied the felt with, it was rubber cement, not paint. It comes with a paint brush attached to the inside of the lid for application. Both can be found at just about any hardware store.

SerpaDesign no i think once a week is great. but be aware you'll eventually hit a wall on things you can talk about that are new. so if you explain every little thing youll hit that wall sooner. make your self a syllabus on what you plan to do so you have the next year planed out. like video on finding and taking care of spring tails, why have too much or too little gravel at the bottom, themed terrarium (the inside), seeling it with cork vs plastic vs melting the glass onto it.... wtf?!@
