Growing up I had no one to teach me quilting ... I pulled a good one ... at 45, I decided to make a quilt. The quilt was a king size quilt with 2" finished squares in a "Around the World" pattern. No pre-cut strips, no special cutter (just scissors) and no sewing strips together, then cutting the strips of blocks ... no one had told me that could be done to make it easier. I added a 6" border ... and hand quilted it (without a quilter's rack) ... turned out better than I expected. With it, I won an honorable mention at the fair. That experience kinda put the idea of more quilts on the back burner ... I worked full time. Oh how I wish I knew someone like you, way back then. (I'll be 70 this year ... and still have the quilt.) You have motivated me to getting back into it again. ;) Thank-you! (I think ... nah, just kidding ... I'm sure.) Have you ever wondered how many quilts have been inspired by you ... quilts that would not be here, if not for you? :) The memories of warm hugs that now come to mind wrapped in the warm quilt around you, even tho the quilter is no longer here. You inspire more than you know. God bless.

Jo Ann McCraw I hope all your children and especially grandchild have a blanket/quilt made with love I believe in putting hugs into something like a stuffed animal so child ham hug it and be comforted Wouldn’t it be nice for kids to have grandma hugs that last way beyond your lifetime and hugs don’t wash out but you can always add more to it then all they need to do to feel you closer is to wrap it around them to have a hug and love. I wish I had a quilt from my grandma.

When I made my first quilt, I didn't have a computer or any family around to teach me. Boy oh boy ... do I wish I knew you back then. My first quilt was a "Trip Around the World" (California King size) made with 2 inch finished squares (1,088 squares) ... no individual blocks ... just all squares and one 6 inch border. I sewed the squares on the sewing machine, but hand quilted it. Got an "honorable mention" at the local fair. It was a labor of love for my then boyfriend (now husband). It took me more than 6 months to make ... I worked full time at that time. Just now getting back to quilting .... you make it so quick and easy ... love it!

OMG! After watching my mother-in-law hand piece the granny square, I had put it on the "won't ever be doing that" list (along with the wedding ring & the cathedral window) but now I am doing to do the granny square!!! I have the perfect jellyroll, the Monet set with a heavy cream background. I am so excited!!!!!

Once I was watching Sewing with Nancy, and Nancy Zieman (rest her soul--I miss her!) showed how if you have a longer fabric that you need to ease in, you put it on the bottom and the feed dogs will ease it in....just like you did, Jenny. Her little memory aid was : Feed the Dogs. I loved it and have never forgotten it. Thanks for the video tutorial!

I am so thankful to the helper at MSQC who took my call this week in which I asked about a tutorial that I had viewed and inadvertently deleted. The kind lady was patient with me, and really took time trying to help me identify what I had deleted. All I could tell her was I wanted to make the Goodnight Irene quilt using 2 1/2” strips rather than the charm packs, and the tutorial was on making a four patch using strips. I wasn’t very helpful in my description of the tutorial, but I did remember it was sewn with batiks. This tutorial on The turnabout granny square WAS IT!! Thank you! I like to think that the sweet helper found it and had you rerun it just for me-I had not given her my contact info. Love your stores, my daughter and I have been to Hamilton and enjoyed the trip. Your employees are wonderful.

Jenny this is pure genius! My only Grand daughter will be turning 18 next month, graduating from High school this year too so I am going to make this quilt for Her birthday. The rounded edges give the granny square blocks softer edges while the batik fabrics add modern appeal to a classic pattern, that sure fits my Grand daughter & I :) I know she will love it as much as I will love making it. Ann Correll Lucky son I’m #4 of 6 My mom made the mistake of sew and tell about her first 50year quilt for #1 child.... she slaved over the top queen size top and got only the top done before number one hit fifty.... so she showed him and he turned up his nose at it and said no thanks I don’t like it or the colors so.... mom had a dark browns perfectly pieced top that she’ll probably never finish and find a grateful person that will love it... she also used first run fabrics. Spendy. and #2 got hers on time just two years later all done each square uniquely different touch and feel textured squares and all batiks and added dimensions.... turned out beautiful and with matching pillows case/shams. #3, her fabric was picked washed and sits stacked ready to cut. with design and cut measurements all there with it. I’m now 51.... I begged my mom to start mine when I turned 49..... May I add she has a long arm queen sized..... she’s quite the talented accomplished sewer. She does fee motion machine embroidery too which preference over digital machine embroidery

Thank you once more for and ingenious block. I very much like on point blocks but have trouble doing them.I love the saying 'finished is better than perfect.' I have four quilts waiting to be sandwiched and finished and can't get them done for various reasons. But This will be my mantra from now on. As you say, Jenny, no one is inspecting these quilts because they are just so happy to get them. I am going to make this into a cushion cover first before making a quilt to try out colours. I bought this pattern, and I totally love how it's looking. I got to the point of having all the strip sets cut, and in piles. Then I went ahead and made 2 blocks all the way to finished squares. I really love how this looks! I love the look of the lost points. Maybe I'm not experienced enough, but for me this isn't a quilt I could get done in a weekend. I mean, from cutting to sewing, and have the whole quilt top done. It's so pretty it'll be worth the effort, but I'd tell other newbies to expect this to take a good amount of time.

Don't know what I was even thinking when I made the quilt top and back. They are 9 feet by 9 feet! Lots of room for practicing free motions quilting samples. Everyone has to have a "first," right? Agreed! This is my new mantra!! Finished is better than perfect. I made a beautiful Alter Ego quilt in fall colors that you showed and I made a scalloped Edge it was so beautiful. But while I was making those little blocks I ran out of my favorite Fabric and wanted to use it just a little bit more. I piece together scraps to make two tiny blocks and I was afraid that it would be a flaw in the quilt. It takes us a long time to find them when we try to look for them they just don't show and the quilt is gorgeous! Finished is better than perfect!

Love this quilt idea. Looks like a Lot of work, But Looks like a lot of FUN!!.. EZ to add few more squares to make it just a little bigger for queen/king sizes too. I truly like this block. For some reason though Jenny, I was expecting you to snowball the strips. I think I am going to try it that way. Yours is absolutely beautiful! I like larger quilts so I thought I would use 1 1/2 of each and snowball the corners. Wish me luck!

If you do not like corners chopped off, you can make only the 2 1/2" wide white strip 3" wide, I think the problem will be solved, I did not try yet but I think it should match. Thank you Jenny for all your interesting tutorials.

In watching this after sewing the initial units together, I believe the bottom corner is going to end up in the center of the blocks. I’m re-looking at my units with this in mind. I hope I’m looking at it correctly. It’s such a pretty pattern. Happy sewing 🧵!

It's so soft with the look of rounded corners! However, I still can't figure out why those center blocks still look the same size as the outer ones after the quadrants are sewn together. It's like magic!

Honestly, I think that the points lost at the corners really gave out an organic feel and make the blocks more smoother than the traditional method. I am so giving this block a try with my fabric stash. 🙂
