Great how did they turn out?
@dif6728 жыл бұрын
They turned out good, but I'm wondering if my pods are a little too big. I ended up with around 30 for half a recipe so I might only fill the ice trays only half full next time.
@bigbearhomestead8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when we made the pods ice cube size we ended up with 60. So if you made them the size of a rounded tablespoon, you would probably get closer to 120
@sharonsmith13603 жыл бұрын
What was the total cost of all the supplies.
@besties77772 жыл бұрын
@@sharonsmith1360 probably around $20, the borax and the washing soda is about $3, the oxi clean is about $7 depending on the size of the container, the ones iv seen where I live are $13, the zote soap are about $1-2. The scents people either have on hand or have to buy, the oils range from $6-13 depending on where u get it. So id estimate, max would be $20 minimum, $12.

For a reliable spray bottle to keep on hand, I buy the professional spray bottles at Lowes. I clean alot with a bleach mixture and these bottles hold up to that and store for quite a long time before I start having troubles. I always buy 3 or 4 at a time and store the extras.

I use fabuloso for my binder. I saturate the powder mix, and add more powders until it is almost putty. After a day of dry time, I freeze them to get them out of the ice cube trays whole, without any crumbling corners. Aging them makes them very hard, and they don't resolve as easy.

Good straightforward video. Two things... 1) forming pods sounds a lot like forming bath fizzies. i think some use a meatballer to grasp and squeeze, then release and set to dry. Very fast and neat. 2) Also - I'm very leery of using Fels Naptha, or Zote. They don't list ingredients on their labels but I've written to the company and got them - they have some pretty dubious ingredients (carcinogenic). So... definitely use gloves grating it, but... as a soap maker, can handmade soap work? It will contain glycerine. Maybe like a castile soap? I have a lot of soap scraps, but i am wondering what that might do as far as causing scum buildup in the machine. Thanks.

Just an FYI. I made my own laundry soap for years. This is laundry soap- not laundry detergent. There is a big difference in the two, laundry soap (like any other soap) will build up. Think of your shower after a week of showers. It will build up on your clothes, in your machine, and eventually in the pipes of the machine and ruin it. There is nothing in the homeade recipes to break down the soap- it will build up on your clothes and ruin your machine. I lost my first washing machine to diy laundry soap. After a few years of using this, the first time I washed my clothes in real detergent (store bought) my water was like mud. I think it's a great idea to diy things- but laundry soap was not made for washing machines. It was made for handwashing (with a washboard) that's why years ago people didn't have issues the washboard and the way they washed was able to get rid of the soap. Washing machines can't do this! Your clothes and your machine are better off with the least expensive store detergent bc that has surfactants in it that will get rid of the buildup
@maryanderson26027 жыл бұрын
Kelbel Marley commercial bars of soap to wash your body with are not called soap. I don’t know if you ever noticed that or not. The FDA defines soap as: Lye + oils (fats) = soap + glycerin. Commercial soaps have all the glycerin removed. And they add detergents/surfactants to increase bubbly lather. So you’re also not putting soap in your tub or down your drain when you bathe. You are putting detergent in your tub & down your drain and pipes.
@carolinabeth51736 жыл бұрын

I've watched other people make liquid detergent that they then add gallons and gallons of water to after they cook down and melt the soaps in water. After they water it all down it still gets kind of gelatinous. I'm wondering if you cooked down the soaps in water and then poured the mixture into cubes without adding all of the extra water if that would work too?

I'm not sure, but it would be worth trying.

@bigbearhomestead4 жыл бұрын
We used to have a front loader and would just put it in with the load of clothes.
@jessicaa93598 жыл бұрын
how do you store the extra if you do not want to make all the pods at one time? and would you just split the mixture before you start spraying it with the water and vinegar?
@robynbigbearhomestead58348 жыл бұрын
We have done both. We have sprayed the mixture down and then kept the leftovers in a container with the lid secured tightly. The mixture clumped up a little, but when we were ready to make more pods, we just wet it down again with the vinegar water mixture and put it in the ice trays. They worked fine. You can also just split up the mixture into two equal parts. Keep half as a dry detergent in case you run out of pods before making more.

The NAFTA Bar is smaller because it’s more concentrated it’s actually a lash soap where the result is just basically a step above bathroom soap it just has a little more cleaning agent to add to it but each bar has the same amount of cleaning so you don’t just use half a bar use the whole bar

why do you use vinegar for a binding agent. what effect does it have to dissolve the pods. Robyn what type of machine do you personally have.
@bigbearhomestead2 жыл бұрын
I have a top leader HE machine at the moment. Used to have a front loader and didn't like how the moisture collected in the front. As far as the vinegar goes, it helps the powder to clump. And vinegar helps with the cleaning.

I used the baking soda wash and the oxyclean, fels-naptha and Downy laundry scents. I couldn't find the Borax. Anyway I mixed mine altogether and put it in Mason jars. Could I take a jar of it and do it without vinager? I hate it , just water. Thanks, Orandell

The vinegar helps activate the washing soda and borax.

so do you get the same amount of loads with cubes as you do powder? wondering if it equals out?

Albany Mountain homestead it is probably close, but with all the ingredients together, the volume has more cleaning power than just plain old detergent.

Love the topic. Will be trying this one out. Did not care for the background music while you were talking. Was kind of loud on my end. Still clicked the LIKE button. ;)

I did not like the background music, way too loud for this it was hard to hear the process at times, better off now music at all. Loved the topic though, and will give it a try! TFS.

Wonderful idea. Would hot or warm water work better than cold for the pods?
@robynbigbearhomestead58348 жыл бұрын
Trudy, are you talking about the wash cycle, or when you are making the pods? I have never noticed if the temperature works better in the mixture. As far as the cycle goes, we have used them both ways and have never had any problems.

With these pods do you need to wash with hot water to dissolve the grated soap?
@bigbearhomestead2 жыл бұрын
We didn't but you could to be on the safe side

do you use this only sometimes and then use the tide pods since i see many containers on that? this video is years old so do you still use these diy pods and laundry soap or have you changed that now?
@bigbearhomestead Жыл бұрын
The tide pod containers were from friends who saved them for us to store the pods. We don't use the pods as much because we have a hard time getting them to set and stay because of the moisture in the laundry room. But we have used the powder when they crumble.

Could you use an ice cream scoop and put them on cookie sheet to set?
@bigbearhomestead4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if they will set that way. Worst case it doesnt, just use it as a powder.
