Learn how to make an Adjustable DC Power Supply, You can adjust the Voltage from 1V to 28V, with 1A constant current.
this is a starting level of adjustable power supply, I will Upgrade this power supply day by day....!

Major Components List:
C1= 3300uF, 50V
C2= 1uF, 63V
C3=10uf, 63V
R1= 3.3k
R2= 5K Potentiometer
R3= 240 Ohms
LED
d1,d2,d3,d4, = 1A diodes , (1N4007)
Transformer = 24V or 12V*** (1A)
***[ if you use 12V transformer, then the transformer must have tapping of 12-0-12, Otherwise you will not get 24V] as I have used in this project.

Hi.Thanks to your diagram and circuit i was able to build my bench power supply.But insted lm317 i used the D2390 transistor.All the rest are the same.I use a 24 acv trasformer and at the out put i have 34 dc volts.The adjustable range is from 0 to 32 and can handle easilly 3 amps.I cand beleved that i build it, but all credits goes to you...the teacher.Thanks alot.Looking for the next project that i hope i can make it and learn from you ....

Usually in this typical LM317 power supply setup, people install a diode from the output of the LM317 to the input. (Tech sheets for this regulator even suggest that). It protests the regulator in the event of a cap failure. Just a suggesting.

I have a problem, it's adjusting from 22V to 28V. It should be adjusting from 1.25V to 28V...Can you plz help me? Another question, if I use 220 Ohms resistor, will there be any problem?

Good quality video, but I think it would be ten times better without awful music and an instructive voice instead. I see many comments asking further information simply because there was NO guiding voice to briefly describe components & assembly.

And I'll add a current regulator, and a analog meter with 2 scales - V, A (voltage/current mode gets switched by DPDT switch) Also there will be a 4 A fuse at the output and a 500 mA fuse on the input. Proper grounding is a must, so that will be there too Technical parameters of DIY power supply unit: - 0-24 volts / 0-3 amperes / 72W max. - Adjustable voltage - Adjustable current limit - Analog meter 2 in 1 - voltage and current combined - GROUNDED - quiet operation - etc.

Great project . . . . everyone wants a resistor burner. Would last a whole lot longer with some heat sink compound under the voltage regulator. . . . When buying the compound I suggest you buy some decent tools.. . . . Metal cases need earthing, and you really do need a fuse !

Yes the music is annoying... But the idea is very good. It is up to the user to modify it or make it better. I would add a circuit breaker instead of a fuse. The circuit is not much different than a old Eico power supply i have. Other than The one I have has a lot of overkill in it. It uses chokes to get the full 24 volts out of it.

Nice video sir I created the circuit with dual display voltmeter and ammeter and I use 10k potentiometer. Voltage is showing up to 32v but I connect motor it not working and not showing ampere on display and not working only voltage is dropping. What is the exact problem sir plz tell me

Sir, I have made this project but instead of getting minimum voltage 1 V ,I get 8 V and maximum voltage 26 V . Help me please to lower the minimum value (upto 1 V ). Waiting for your reply. Thx

Sorry mate, its ok, but...there a few things i want to point out. First, get a 3A fuse. Youll gonna blow the poor 317 and hes gone. Second, intergrate a voltmeter inside it. Why not? Third, GROUND THE HEATSINK! The backside of the lm is gnd so ground it up to prevent shorts. Forth, make a permant pcb. Im 15 and i made my own using that regulator.

The heatsink I think is small and won't dissipate much heat when voltage drop across the Ic is large and more current of 1 Amp is drawn by load. Can we mount the Ic on metal cabinet to act as heatsink in this case ?

LM317 have minimum constant reference 1.25 volts. If you want to go from zero volts, need you negative voltage, so it's not 0-28v and need fuse ofc.

In the circuit diagram shows 2 resistors, but in the circuit board there's 3 resistor? whats the use of the 3rd resistor?

As a starting level it's commendable, but it has fairly low efficiency compared to SMPS ones, being the LM317 a linear regulator. On the other hand, this is much simpler to build.

Sure. It may consume a lot of power, but linear power supplies always have the cleanest output and that's why they're still around. Also, they're a lot simpler as you said.

No way to fix.. You have to replace. Before replacing please cross check the output voltage of the transformer. Remember that the output voltage of the transformer is AC, not DC.

Great little power supply but not only do you have no over current protection by way of a fuse, you really should have earth / grounding on that metal box for safety reasons. It would be illegal to use in EU. In fact, this device is potentially very dangerous death trap. If a 230V live wire touches the metal box from the inside the whole box becomes live / hot. If you then touch any metal part of the box and you yourself are grounded, Bang! Goodbye you! If box was grounded it would either break fuse or trip the RCD (Residual Current Device), also called the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in USA saving your life. I strongly urge you to update your video. There's hardly any extra expense to use a 3-core mains cable.

Bodragon lol here in germany your not even allowed to wire a lamp in ur own home because something could go wrong... If you still do so and something really goes wrong your insurance wont pay because its ur fault, even worse would be if you damage other persons or their property.

ok I need help I have a AC/DC Unversal adapter TS506B.the switch broke and 2 springs came off and I don't where does the second spring goes so I decided to make a idea I will make a dc power supply 0 to 42 volts.the mah of TS506B is 1000mah it has voltage switch 1.5-3-4.5-6.7.5-12v I want to add the 42 volt to it.I have lots of VCR LCD screens,1 potentiometer and a 42v EPSON power Supply so how do make it to work.also my Mosfet P75NF75 on Amazon is coming this month on October supposly.I still have a QW-MS305D dc power Supply the problem was the mosfet was spoiled so I had to order the same new one.

I would have added a dab of thermal compound between the LM317 and the heat sink prior to assembly on the perforated board.

why do you have 3 resistors wired in series between prongs one and two on the voltage regulator? you only specify two resistors and a potentiometer in the parts list.. and by the looks of the schematic, the 3.3k one should be wired to the 3rd prong. Maybe I need a little guidance.

Or if you could say the different resistances of all the resistors used in the video, I can figure out the rest. You are using a total of 4 resistors plus a pot in the video when you only call for two resistors plus a pot in the schematic...

Sir, given circuit diagram is different than you done in this video. I seen, you use total 4 Resistor (except 5K potentiometer) and I dont understand some connection, In a given diagram Resistor 3 connected between LM317's 1st pin to Resistor 2(5K potentiometer) and more connection between LM317's 1st pin and Resistor 3rd to Resistor 2. please send me your own manual diagram if you had draw during this work. Thank You.

how are you getting 28 volts out of a 24 volt transformer configuration? How are you getting a VOUT>VIN with a 317?

230VAC is 230VAC RMS. It is not the actual peak of the AC Wave form. The peak value is 325.22VAC peak, so there is really more energy there than what you think it is. Now the transformer is a 10 to 1 ratio transformer (transformers aren't measured in voltage). This means that 325.22VAC peak is converted to 32.522VAC peak. When it goes through the bridge rectifier it loses .7V over the diodes of the rectifier that gives you 31.8VDC. There is voltage loss over the regulator so it goes down a bit more. Which is how he gets the 28VDC through the output.
