It's a #tbt video from the archives of SQTV (originally filmed in 2010) and never before publicly released. In this video, learn to make a unique emulsified scrub that is both cleansing and moisturizing. It's a little more complicated to make than a traditional oil and salt (or sugar) scrub. But the benefits make it well worth the effort. This scrub is easier to use, doesn't feel greasy or leave a slippery mess in the shower and it won't leak if you ship it or it falls sideways.

When I'm binge watching soapmaking and bath product videos, I ALWAYS come back to this one! It's one of my all time favorites! I actually just jumped onto the scrubs bandwagon only about a month ago after doing only soaps for so long. I'm addicted and actually just placed another order this morning from Brambleberry for supplies to make more! :)

I do too! NOT greasy at all, feels so clean and my hands are so soft afterwards! I actually keep my personal jar at the sink and use it whenever my hands are feeling too dry since it's cleansing too. :)

Folks for those that are looking for an alternative/substitute for sterilizing packaging etc with RA ..it has been recommended to me that denatured alcohol can be used as it DOES NOT contain detergents where as RA does which can attract dirt and has a sticky film it tends to leave behind..but as always do your own research and draw your own conclusions!

@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 жыл бұрын
Hi there! So glad you like the tutorial! Optiphen ND works best in water-based recipes, like toners and cleaning sprays. However, Optiphen would work great in this recipe. You can use it at .5-1.5%. The Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives post has more information on that: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/ We love the liquid soap in this recipe because it adds some great lather. If you want to leave it out, I would recommend increasing the amount of water. Because the texture will be different without soap, a small test batch may be helpful for you. =)

I know this video is old but I have a few questions that hopefully will get answered. What is the shelf life of this scrub, do you go by oil shelf life that you use? also when I made this mine got very thick, not runny at all. I omitted the beeswax (hoping it wouldn't get too thick) and used hemp oil instead of Almond oil. As soon as I added water mixture to oil mixture is instantly thickened to a crisco consistency as soon as I blended it.

Hi Carlos. Here's a dupe of Burt's Bees lip balm. happymoneysaver.com/burts-bees-lip-balm-recipe/ It contains lanolin, though no colorant for tinting. Mica will be fine, just as long as it's noted as lip safe.

Hi Carlos! Thanks for that suggestion! Lanolin is usually most similar to a butter (although sometimes it is liquid depending on how it has been processed), so you can use it in place of the mango butter in this recipe. You may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the texture. =)

You're right, this product is essentially a mix between a lotion and a scrub. You definitely could add sugar to a lotion...I think that would work just fine! Without any soap, it would be more gentle, but I bet it would leave skin feeling nice and soft. Great idea Eva!

Hi Ayla! Distilled water has had any impurities removed through a process that involves boiling the water and condensing the steam in a clean container. While boiling your water at home may remove some impurities, it may not get all of them. I would definitely recommend using distilled water to prevent any bacteria or mold from growing. =)

Is there a possible substitution for the mango butter? I just placed an order before watching this video, and I really want to make this, but I didn't buy any mango butter. It's on the list for next time!

Shea butter will work instead! It's a bit softer than mango butter, so the scrub will be softer overall. It will still feel really nice though. =) Read more about butters here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/all-about-butters-in-bath-beauty-products/ Shea butter: www.brambleberry.com/Shea-Butter-P3220.aspx

@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 жыл бұрын
Sonu K Hi Sonu! I'm not entirely sure if that would work! Because melt and pour solidifies at room temperature, it may do some weird things in this scrub. It may leave little bits of hardened soap, or want to separate from the scrub itself. I would definitely recommend using a liquid soap. =)

Can I skip the water and soap part and combine my oils, waxes, and preservative with my sugar?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 жыл бұрын
Hello! You can! Keep in mind not adding the water and soap won't make this an emulsified scrub anymore. That means it won't need to be stick blended. Also, you won't need to add the stearic acid or emulsifying wax, as you're not combining water and oils. The texture will be different, so you may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the consistency. You'll want to adjust the fragrance oil amount. To do so, you can use our Fragrance Calculator! Simply select "salts" in the drop down menu. Fragrance Calculator: www.brambleberry.com/Pages/Fragrance-Calculator.aspx You'll also want to adjust that preservative amount to be .5-1% of your recipe. Typically, you only include preservatives in recipes that have water. However, this scrub may have water splashed into it in the shower, so you can add a preservative to be extra careful. =) Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/

Joy Diamond You can definitely sub for witch hazel. I do for my face scrub:) with aloe vera liquid. If you just want to add it, it will make it more loose and runny, but still effective:) i would add just a little bit at a time just in case. until you get the consistency you're happy with. hope this helps:)

HI Anne Marie!!! Can you please tell me whats the purpose of adding an emulsifyer, beeswax and the stearic acid?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim! Oils and water naturally don't mix with each other. That's why you add the emulsifier! It allows the oils and water in this recipe to mix and create a nice creamy consistency. I'll include a lotion video that explains more about the ingredients and what properties they add. =) Stearic acid helps make the scrub thicker and adds a nice fluffiness! Also, beeswax adds a nice firmness to the scrub so it's not too soft. =) How to Make Lotion From Scratch: How to Make Lotion from Scratch Emulsifying wax: www.brambleberry.com/Emulsifying-Wax-Nf-P4209.aspx Stearic acid: www.brambleberry.com/Stearic-Acid-oz-P4210.aspx Beeswax: www.brambleberry.com/Beeswax-Yellow-P4206.aspx

Dear Anne Marie, I love this recipe and I have two questions.. Can I use yellow beeswax in stand of white? I have the Dr. Bronners pure Castile oil at home, can I use this in stand? Thank you very much :)
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 жыл бұрын
Hello! You can absolutely use yellow beeswax in this recipe. Keep in mind it will change the color, and that yellow beeswax has a smokier smell than the white beeswax. Yellow beeswax: www.brambleberry.com/Beeswax-Yellow-P4206.aspx Also, we didn't test this recipe with another liquid soap, so I'm not exactly sure if it would work! You may want to make a small test batch to be sure. =)

What can I use as a substitute to stearic acid? I am allergic. Can I use a combination of xanthan gum and guar gum instead?

@bramble-berry 8 жыл бұрын
+Nadine Chamas Hi Nadine! We love using stearic acid because it helps thicken the scrub and make it fluffy. However, it is optional. You can leave it out if you like! A small test batch would be helpful. =)
@m8272m
@m8272m 8 жыл бұрын
+Nadine Chamas Not an expert but I am familiar with gums in cuisine and some formulations that utilize them: [edit1: *I completely forgot the context in which you were asking your question. A scrub. Y'know, I have no idea in that case. Below is what turns out to be somewhat helpful information for someone, but it doesn't directly address your concern with this type of product because I've never made it before. Best of luck, let us know how it went if you do decide to try!]* Do you have an emulsifier that's suitable for the oil phase's HLB value? If xanthan/guar was intended to be an emulsifier - well, it's not. However, if you simply want it as a thickener (stearic acid is considered both, which is why I'm including both scenarios) substitute, I would use it in very, very small quantities at first. If you don't have experience with xanthan/guar gum gum, make a really quick 'lotion'. Just the basics, in the microwave (just sayin', IME with 'prototypes' or test runs, it's suitable if used on a low setting, carefully) for a really quick (I'm thinking like 6oz net weight) test so you can feel how xanthan/guar interact with whatever specifics you intend to use. It's a viable choice as a thickener but whereas stearic acid can feel a bit waxy, gums can feel tacky. Combined with a higher than average amount of many humectants, it may just be too much. It's all about preference assuming you're following good manufacturing processes! Please come back and let us (+Soap Queen TV, not sure if that tag will work...) know how it went for you. Best of luck!

@bramble-berry

+khaddy huss Potassium sorbate is typically used as a food preservative. We haven't done a lot of testing with it, so I'm not entirely sure how it would work in this recipe! I would recommend using Phenonip or Optiphen.
