This video is for artists who would like to work or study in Europe, and become an international artist. I'd like to share my own experience living in different European countries since 2010. First thing first, you need a Schengen visa to enter continental Europe. Once you obtain the Schengen visa, you are allowed to move freely within 26 European countries. Apart from affordable fine art education and rich in culture, you have also more chance to show your art. Europe accounts for 59% of all exhibitions in the world!
Of course every coin has two sides. Making a lot of money as an artist in Europe is very difficult due to the weak art market. First of all you might not even have the right to sell art in the European country of your choice. After getting the right permit to work, you might be paying more taxes than you'd expect. Moving to a foreign country to make art and settle down is a big commitment. That's why it's important to plan well before making your moves!

Great information you got. My greatest dream is to pursue art in Europe. Hoping one day I will make a living through art there. I am from Kenya and trying to figure out what is needed to study there. Thank you.

Hi this is an amazing video! Thank you so much for making it. I am a US resident (born here) and would like to move to Europe to make art (painting and weaving) and it sounds like the easiest way is to maybe get a master's degree there (I have a BFA from RISD in the US). Is there an online resource where I can look at master's programs and see what is the most economically and logistically possible? Thanks again!

Hey Henry, RISD is a good school, I am sure you can go for a MFA and/or PhD here easily. The best, is in mainland Europe mostly public uni are free of charge! Only need to speak their language.

There are some only portals that I used to browse but I found many problems. The information on those portals are not accurate because every year the admission requirement changes. I would say, you narrow down to a country you want to live in, then do some research in the language of the country.

However, I know many MFA/MBA graduates who could not stay due to visa restrictions. Normally you need 1 or 2 years of cost of living to support yourself after graduation. And get a job sponsorship. Otherwise just working as freelance artist is not really an option as a foreigner.

I will give you an example. David is a Malaysian classmate of mine, studying in Spain. After masters degree level graduation, he had 3 choices: 1, job seeking visa for one year, which he must find a visa sponsorship job contract within that time period. 2, investment visa where he must buy a property. 3, startup entrepreneur visa that is valid for two years, but he must establish a running business within that period. I recommend purchasing a property, because it's a lot easier and cost effective.

Very Private Gallery Thank you so much for your replies and encouragement. Do all public unis teach in the country’s native language, or are there public unis that are free and who teach in English? That would be my preferred choice of course. Other than that my preference is based off of the quality of education and the artistic community and market in the area. How do you suggest I research to find what I am looking for and make it possible?

Hi Basnx, I did my undergrad in a developing country and went abroad as soon as I graduated. It is not easy to make it as an artist in a complete new place. I recommend getting some service based jobs (like graphic designer) so you can have a stable income when you settle down.

Usually it takes 12 months to build an audience, so you need to be able to make an income in a foreign country for 12 months straight. Also for visa purposes, it’s easier to get a day job in the world of art/design.
