It took me a year of watching all types of soaping vids before I started soaping. I watched and re-watched the same videos over and over again until I was able to tell the difference between an experienced soaper and a beginner. It took me a month of watching a soap calc demo (thank you fellow soaper!) before I caught on to that. Once I learned soap calc, I developed my own recipes and learned to manipulate the superfat percentage to the point that I can make any type of soap and have just the right amount of butters and oils caressing my skin along with a powerful lather. Soaping 101 is a good place to learn. And soapers are always learning.

This is the best video on youtube! It really helps beginner soap makers, it's a helper for people living on a tight budget, it's an easy recipe for those who want to sell soap and improve the family income, it's a nice hobby, it can be useful in times of economy crisis or in a poor country like mine (Brazil), AND it's a good idea for gifts. Your calculations are neat, your voice over is straight to the point, you don't try to be funny or to sound arrogant. Thank you very much for this video! I wish you the best!

I just subscribed , I found your channel trying to find a tutorial on how to use wood ash as a source of lye to make soap at home. You have a great teaching style and a soothing voice . I had no idea that there was a craft movement in soap making. While I am primarily interested in soap making as a way to be more self sufficient , I am interested in learning more. Thank You for making this Channel .

I don't want you to be afraid to make soap but do understand it's a precise thing or your soap will be too caustic and may damage skin. I think the place Soapmaking101 gets a lot of the supplies has a soap calculator where you plug in the fats you want to use and it then tells you how much water and lye to use.

Can't hardly wait for you to do a soap using a tallow. I made my first batch of beef tallow soap on 10/4/13. It was a 4 lb. batch. Recipe: 37.76 oz beef tallow; 9.6 oz. canola; 15.4 oz. coconut oil & 1.3 oz. of castor. Water 24.32 oz & lye 9.2 oz, with 4 oz. of fragrance. I love the hardness of this bar, as well as the creaminess. Additive - goat's milk (powdered). I am a relative new soapmaker. Love your channel! Looking forward to making your 4 Thieves soap.

More on the Cocoa Butter: I just looked at Essential Depot, where this author gets some of her supplies. The Least expensive way to get cocoa butter from them is to buy 5lb for $29.02. This comes to $1.45 for 4oz. If you find this 4oz stick at a Dollar Store -- buy up all you can get -- it's a STEAL!

Google 'soap calculator'. There are several online and you just input your oils and desired weight of entire loaf and it calculates quantities for lye, water, and oils themselves. Check general combinations of oils in different recipes because some work better together than others. For example, all coconut oil can be quite cleansing, but quite drying at the same time. Different oils have different qualities and a good combination is the key.

Thank you so much for recipe and the small batch recipe! I think we all have at home - milk, oatmeal and honey and knock off those items of the list also! Cheaper is even better! I liked that you used milk at the end, as additive. I recently made Goat milk soap (my first soap ever) and I did scorched milk a bit, as it was used iced, instead of ice water....I also added a bit honey and insulated soap for 24 hr. Now I know - I shouldn't do it in the future! Thank you!

luving2scrap, you can also use milk cartons, cut the edge off the long way to make a loaf mold, do line it though. Some people use those Pringles cans and I've even seen people use a card board box, lined with a plastic garbage bag. Just wanted to put that out there for people who are in test mode.

Hi! I have been thinking of trying making soap. Your video is so helpful! And I LOVE that you used Dollar Tree ingredients to show just how easy and inexpensive it can be done if needed! One question from a novice--I don't mind using shopping bags for liners but I was curious if parchment paper, or even wax paper would work also? Not sure what made me think of them but thought I'd ask for the "file away for future knowledge" category! Thanks again for this video!
