That is pretty neat. We have Gantry cranes at work, but can lift 20 tons... or that's max load. The control box is wireless... for operator safety. The movement is motorized. It goes back and forth on a track. Pretty cool stuff.

Awesome! I'm working on a I beam trolley hoist for my workshop also. I was thinking about taking a retractable electric cord reel and take the stops out of it to use it to keep the electrical cord tight.
@KarasCyborg8 жыл бұрын
Something I find useful is a roller conveyor belt at table level. Make a 16' of roller tables on both sides of the saw to make it easier to cut steel. I like bi-metal horizonal bandsaw rather than chop saw. Substantially less noise, less sparks to ignite materials laying around, cuttings are contained in one area rather than all around the shop. Accuracy is also improved as blades are 1/16 vs a 1/8 chopsaw blade. Kneeling up and down for every cut is great exercise, but fatiguing when your trying to work all day long.

Love the build, but is all the way on the crane supported by just 4 m8 bolts? The ones which attach the winch to the CAT
@poodlelord8 жыл бұрын
for the first time I've m not impressed. you build this big track, and then you use significantly smaller stock on the rolling part, then to top it off you put all the load of the crane on 4 fasteners, you might as well have built the whole thing out of sheet metal
@jradical48888 жыл бұрын
Assuming those fasteners are around the 1/4-20 size and he used a decent grade bold each one should be good for about 3000 lbs.
@poodlelord8 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's some amazing material.
@manickn68197 жыл бұрын
poodlelord agreed. First one that is seriously under engineered. My thoughts exactly when I saw those parts of the video.
@MR-nl8xr7 жыл бұрын
Jradical. prove it.
@erikd44617 жыл бұрын
Jradical is right, your grossly under estimating the strength of his arrangement. Lets say he used a 1/4-28 unf bolt, if you look at MIL-S-8879C, it lists the nominal minor diameter of a 1/4" -.2500-28-UNF at .2065 inches. Now a few simple calculations and we can find out the he the A (area) cross-section, and then apply that with a known spec'd bolt grade strength from mil , and we get A = Pi x r2 = Pi x (.2065/2)2 = .03349 in2 Grade 8 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 130,000 lbs / in2 x .03349 in2 = 4354 lbs minimum Grade 8 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 150,000 lbs / in2 x .03349 in2 = 5024 lbs minimum Grade 5 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 92,000 lbs / in2 x .03349 in2 = 3081 lbs minimum Grade 5 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 120,000 lbs / in2 x .03349 in2 = 4019 lbs minimum Even a cheap grade5 1/4-28 unf bolt would hold a minimum of 3000 lbs before it would start to stretch "yield, and exhibit permanent plastic deformation". Assuming that hoist he bought is the common cheap offshore hoist you see a 99% of common discount tools stores, its probably rated to lift 880lbs, such as this one from harbor freight which it looks very very very similar to if not the same, www.harborfreight.com/880-lb-Electric-Hoist-with-Remote-Control-62854.html, then EACH bolt affords a generous 3 to 1 factor of safety, times that by 4, and you can clearly see a those 4 grade5 1\4 dia bolts would be easily up to the job. But I am 99% sure he used a bolt larger then 1\4" but the looks of the video it appears to be at least a 5\16 or metric equivalent as he is located in Cyprus, and being a socket head cap screw design I would venture to say its a higher grade bolt material, at least grade 8 most likely. That MEANS IF MY ASSUMPTIONS ARE RIGHT, his 4 bolt design is many many many times stronger then the calculations given for basic grade 5 1/4" unf bolts. But to prove it, yes, a total of 4 grade5 1/4 bolts would easily and safely support the load that the cheap offshore single line hoist can lift. Infact, a SINGLE grade 5 1/4 bolt center mounted and loaded in pure tension would do it with a factor of yield safety factor of 3 roughly if it is the cheap Chinese 880lb hoist I linked to. Although a single bolt mount in tension for a overhead lifting apparatus would be just silly. To be honest, I trust those 4 bolts more then I would trust that cheap Chinese lifting hoist!

@lordgarak8 жыл бұрын
Those little winches are typically only good for 500 or 1000lbs.
@markfryer98808 жыл бұрын
Those four "little" cap screws are high tensile and you would need to load them up enough to shear down the threads of all four or pull all four through the mounting brackets. I would say that the lift motor will slow down and then stall out first before the cap screws fail.
@markfryer98808 жыл бұрын
They are in compression, but it is most likely that the wheel bearings would begin to fail first.

Hello Very inspiring video. Just wondering two things. What happens if the crane jumps, it may miss the track and fall down. Overhead Crane often have an "anti" jump the iron. For example, if the strap breaks. Next reflection why using a "china" cable crane to such a fine building. chain crane is safer but also more expencive ..but still.. Good idea as always, but i really don't see why there isn't any side to side movement by putting that whole thing on another rolling system. It would be even cooler if you added some motors and a chain to move the cart thing. Besides that critique, Im probably going to build this in my shop anyway. Can't justifie a forklift for such a tiny shop but I bet I can make a weaker version of this for less than $1000.

James Matthews It's an Evolution style tungsten carbide tipped saw blade. About $125.00 a pop. Many different styles and pitches for the type of metal and thicknesses that your going to cut. Don't waste your time with them. Loud, easy to break the teeth, and sharp shards thrown everywhere. Buy a band saw. A good one. Made in USA. Quiet, reasonable to operatate, and last forever. If you want something to throw in the back of your truck, get one like they're using.
