I just made my first drawer set (3) for a bespoke wardrobe job. Really happy with them. I used the Blum concealed runners so my bottom panel was set up 25mm. I used a 6.3mm router bit for the grooves which was perfect for the 6mm MDF bottom. This was my first wardrobe build using your method of build a level subframe on the floor first which was so helpful. I’m definitely doing that going forward. Thanks.

OK I will do, to be honest most the drawers I make are for wardrobes and behind doors, so when the drawer is opened the door doesn't allow you to see the side of the drawer so you never see them. I will buy some though and play around with a set 👍👍

A great sharing video! Thank you for that! Perhaps I'm wrong, you seem to apply Osmo Polyx coating to the preassembled pieces of the drawer. This would imply that during assembly you glue up two pieces where at least one piece is coated with Osmo , and the result is apperently sturdy enough ... Am I correct?

Thank you! Yes you are correct, but it's alot simpler to oil components rather than a complete drawer. The Downside is what you just mentioned. I havnt seen and detrimental effects from this though and the drawers so far have held together 😁👍

Sorry for the silly question, but why even add the rebate beyond helping with the pin gun alignment? Couldn't you just pin, glue and screw the bottom right up against the underside of the butt joints? I'm relatively new to woodworking so sorry if this is obvious to everyone else!

Hello I’ve watched the drawer design video and am nearly ready to have a go. Can I ask is it possible to make the drawer without the rebate. I’m not equipped to make rebate.I was hoping to glue the base and pin and screw without the rebate. Could this work. Or if I bought a palm router could I make a jig to cut the rebate. Hope you can answer. 👏🙏👍

Hi! Yes sure, you can make the drawer without a rebate. The reason for the rebate is not to see the edge of the drawer bottom. But it's not necessary if you don't mind seeing the edge. 👍👍

Hi - one other question. You mention oiling the plywood. What do you use? I'm about to build a chest of drawers using birch ply and would appreciate your suggestion / recommendation. Thx!

Hi Colin, I use an osmo woodwax finish or osmo polyx oil. They do a range of colours and tints and also clear. For a clear finish then a clear polyx oil is good or if you don't want the wet look ( wood darkens very slightly when you put a clear oil) then go for a raw polxy oil. This has white pigment in it that keeps the wood looking as original colour as possible. All of these are from Osmo and thats all I use to be honest when protecting wood and birch etc 👍👍

Hi Ryan I plan to cut the rebates for the drawer bases with a trimmer router having not used a router since school. I’m going to buy the Katsu version just to get started. Would you know which router bit would deal with the cut dimensions you do. Could I do this cut in one pass ? Embarrassing question tbh but have to ask 👍

Worth every penny mate I wish I had done it sooner . Thank you whenever you have time. I’ve never set a trim router up so I’m looking at the information on you tube it’s very confusing as a lot are American. Also one last thing my drawers sides will measure in total 470mm is there a specific length of runner. Im guessing 450 mm. As I’m buying 4 pairs I don’t want to mess it up 😂.

Thats really nice to hear mate, thanks :-) So I would suggest a relatively small and managable cutter for this job... A 19mm radius flute cutter with a 25mm cutting length. You will need to use the little fence that will or would have come with your trimmer, and do the rebate in 2 passes. So set to the depth you need, then adjust the depth of your fence to do half of the rebate. Run it through at this setting on all pieces needed, then move the fence so the cutter moves a little further in and to your desired width, and do the 2nd pass. Yeah in hink so, they have a decent spring in them which is quite tough so one top and bottom of each corner should do.

Great video; can I ask why birch ply is the main board used to make drawers? Are MDF drawers any good? Is MDF too heavy?

Thank you. For me it's just down to what the customer wants. They both do the same job and maybe birch is tougher over the years as its a real wood in layers. I personally love birch, but it is considerably more money than mdf

Hello! We are so.busy nowadays that a company does it for us, they use cnc machines so they are accurate beyond belief! If we didn't use them we would use our table saw, I don't think we would get consistent accurate results if we used the track saw

Hi, great channel and everything is explained like in a book. I'm a home DIY-er, clumsy hobbist, but I wonder on your other video where are you biscuiting and bolting wardrobe, you use biscuit size 10 instead of 20, is it because you use screws so it is enough big? Also on melamine and MDF I've read that it is good to use confirmati screws, 7x50 or 5x50, have you tried it and does it make any differences?

Hi thank you. I don't use formica or melamine so I couldn't say on that. I use 10s biscuits just because I got a great deal on 10 boxes. The size difference doesn't really matter to me, as long as there is a biscuit sticking out that's fine. We used to use 20s though and either one works 👍

i would like to see a video on your ideas for that bench. im not convinced its the right move for your situation. your a production workshop not a diy shop. any time swapping functions or moveing parts out of the way is wasted time.

I like your thoughts! This is true but I'm kind of missing the real joinery side of things. I have a thicknesser, chopsaw, router lift thingy and table saw along with compressor, extraction, and tools accessories storage, along with dog holes, t tracks and vice. Not only that, the bench should free up space to be able to keep my spindle, bandsaw and morticer out to use. I think you've spurred me on to do a quick video of the bench...ive been designing it for weeks !
