Wow this is a crazy find for me. I am Michelle's brother and this was the first time I saw the makeup when I moved to Washington DC on the East Coast. I just had got to the East Coast and got to go see the makeup play in Maryland. It's so weird to see this video.. this was the beginning of a totally different life for me. I never ever would have thought I got this do the things I got to do without having a sister like Michelle Mae Orr

@@thomas-rs1vb I met Michelle (and the guys) a couple times in the Chicago/Wisconsin area whenever they came through. She was super nice and cool to me, the then 16 or 17 year old fanboy dork that I was. I have no idea what we talked about, but recall that she made me laugh my ass off. She helped me set up a bizarre impromptu photo shoot with the band. Still have a few of the prints somewhere... The Make Up is also the last band I got to see before The Vid shut the world down. Early March 2020 in Chicago - great show as always! You should call her up and tell her she's fucking awesome cuz she is.

@@thomas-rs1vb Oh wow! That's so cool! I've got another video of them playing live in NYC. If Michelle would want a high res download of the videos I'd be happy to send them.

@@ChrisBettig did you ever see Deep Lust play with the Make up? That's the band I was in with Allison Wolfe from bratmobile. We always played with the makeup locally..If you want to send it that would be cool..I know Ian would like to have that footage..I will be going to see Michelle in a week at her new place in Arizona. The only member of makeup that I think is still in Washington DC is James. The first time I saw the makeup was about a couple months after Michelle joined and about five months after she moved to DC from Olympia. They played in Olympia and I remember that night very well. My mother and her husband and some of his family members showed up right before the makeup on. There was literally my mom and her husband and five of his family members. They grabbed a bunch of chairs and literally put them right up front of the stage. So people knowing that was Michelle's mother. The crowd gathered behind my mother and her husband and his family members sitting in chairs in front of the stage. Let me know Ian likes to interact with the crowd in front of the stage. That show could not do that. I remember first watching Sonic Youth and I believe it was REM play in Seattle. As soon as Sonic use got off stage before REM took the stage. We all rushed down to see the makeup play. The makeup were very weird sounding to me. They were very unpolished at that time. So it was a pretty awkward show. Oh and also our father was there but it probably was the first time since me and Michelle were little kids that our mother and father were in the same room. Plus the fact that my father is a straight-up redneck. It probably was one of the weirdest experiences for my father. Around all those kinds of different people. I know Michelle was very very uncomfortable. I felt bad for her although I thought it was the funniest thing. I remember Kim Gordon asking me who are those people sitting in chairs in the front of the stage . And the guy that my mother was married to at the time was overweight at a total Gomer. And all of his family members were totally overweight and very unattractive. Not that overweight people are attractive. Got this family was most I'm certainly not attractive in any way and their behavior was quite embarrassing. And the whole show ended up being very awkward for everyone. Then about four months later I'm moving to Washington DC. I immediately started a band with Allison who was still playing with the cold cold hearts. This show here that you recorded was the first time I saw them. We had a week coming up playing with the makeup. I was kind of apprehensive to play with the makeup because they sounded so weird the first time I heard them. That when I saw them play this show here. They were totally different band I'm so awesome. I love playing with the makeup from that point on. They are one of my favorite bands ever. Michelle was just that kind of girl that was always just really cool. Not only did she grow up doing everything the girls did. She did everything the boys did also. Skateboarding with us. I am very proud to have her as a sister. Seeing this video after all these years was simply a treat. And most certainly a trip down memory lane. Thank you

I hear a lot of early James Brown live sets in this. on their 1996 debut, they even copy the instrumental song breaks from the 1962 live at the apollo album (released in 1963). if you haven't heard it, it's on youtube and is an absolute classic

There's a teaspoon of the Doors, the b52s plus original intent
@aubreylear3 жыл бұрын
@@joemartin9904 I guess I can see some vague doors? mainly in the performance/stage presence (doors rarely relied on a bass line, whereas the bass is integral to the makeups sound) though they wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind, but you totally lost me on b52s.

@@aubreylear yea.. lost me too lol. i mean to me the make up was a meld of james brown, r&b, gospel and indie rock / punk. like the hi records r&b years box set and nation or ulysses smashed together

I was at this show- first time seeing them. Funny thing is my friend and I saw the entire band at the Biograph theater in Georgetown by happenstance the night previous- they were showing the film Nico Icon. They walked in single file as a gang and sat right in front of us! It was wild as we just drove in to DC that weekend to see them play (middled for jawbox, I forget the first band) and there they were in front of us. Ps Type U Blood is the best
