Nobody cares about YOU. Amen. This is so true but people don’t believe it. I love how you break it down. Open with a hook so someone pays attention and keeps watching. 1. Ask a question that your reader will say yes to. 2. Follow up with the internal dialogue they might be hearing. Really get in their head. 3. In the rest of this video give then the promise or call to action. Thanks Derek!

“No one cares who you are.” That’s an important concept I need to preach to myself until it sinks in. People care about how we can help them and improve some aspect of their own self-interest. So until we do that no one will care who we are. Bring value and then maybe they’ll care.

Thanks for telling us about how 2 of your video intros differed in drop off rates. That really gave a concrete example on the importance of starting off with a hook.

"The best part is that you wouldn't know if it worked either way because you wouldn't be seeing me say this" This was really meta, lol. What I love most about this video (and most of your videos) is that you give your advice by doing it right in front of our eyes and then explaining it. And I love that you admit that sometimes you'll "fall into the temptation" of not doing things "how it should be" and showing that the results were not as it would if you had done it that way. Bottom line, if we never get to have some fun while doing this what is the point right? Anyways, I loved the advice and I would compare the first 15 seconds of video to the first paragraph of a good copy: you can't waste all the mojo you got with your headline by having a first paragraph that does not compel your content consumer to read until the end. It reminds me of the sad 6s youtube advertisements that try to tell all the good things about some bullsh*t product that nobody cares until we finally can skip to the video we want to watch. It will be interesting to see if there is any of this videos with this concept of content that I care first and see if I keep at the video or have the urge to skip it like always. Thanks for one more Derek!

Making compelling cotent... no one cares about you! Throw away what you would normally do in person when you are making a video or any content by introducing yourself. Start with the hook! --- That's what I take away and I needed to hear this. I'm so used to meeting people in person that I have carried it over to online materials. Start with asking a question, follow up with the internal dialogue and then promise or CTA. AWESOMENESS in 7 minutes!

Nice. It reminds me of "the first rule" of screenwriting... Blow something up! (No, really... Why do you think James Bond movies always start with an action sequence... NOW you're interested!) Or "the first rule" of songwriting... Don't bore us, get to the chorus! (Because that's the part that the audience is typically going to sing along with... Keeping their attention.) Bottom line... It's not about US (the content creators), it's about THEM (the content consumers) and if our content strays from focusing on them... attentions will wander and before we know it... They've wandered away completely.

So true! NO ONE CARES WHO YOU ARE! They only care about how you're going to make their life better...emotionally, financially, spiritually, mentally. That is quite the pivot to not introducing ourselves...that's the habit we are eyeballs deep. I need to get much better and keep front of mind I need to capture and keep their attention.

This is fab advice Derek. I think it works well for presentations too. It bores me to death when I go to an event and there's a speaker (that's not well known) who starts by introducing themselves and reciting their entire life story... Why do they think anyone cares?! Show us what you've got before forcing us to listen to your generic life story.

Starting with a question. That should be easy enough to use. And the internal dialogue is actually fun. The promise or call to action is when people get hooked but only if done right. What are some great tips for the hook? Id love to know

I don’t understand the idea of wasting the most important part of the video with all the intro. All the blah blah blah in the intro reads like someone trying to convince me to stick around. Instead, like you say, give a hook. Give people a reason to keep watching. What’s interesting is many people seem to know this. They throw the hook but then they think that means their bait is compelling enough that I should stick around for 45 seconds or so of them telling me why they are so wonderful. AAArg. Still. No one cares. Or if I do care, I don’t want to hear it yet again. Show. Don’t tell. I’m here for the content. If I stick around, I might be concerned enough to learn about you.
@DerekHalpern7 жыл бұрын
There's a fine line, that's for sure. But remember: there is endless content on the internet. If you'er a new subscriber, you also need to know who you're talking to and why you should trust them. But sometimes people start off with it too soon.
