Back in the day we made a ‘Pocket 40k’ version using 6mm Epic models that worked surprisingly well and was a lot of fun to create and play with! A few things we discovered that increased quality of life enormously when playing with tiny, individual models: Use a piece of sheet metal as a base for the board and add a small magnet to the base of every model. This isn’t as much work as it sounds, and it completely solves the biggest danger: any small tap to the table knocking over all the models and ruining your game. Secondly, adding a grid field to the ‘table’. Having to use tiny rules to move tiny models tiny distances can get tedious, so having distances integrated into the terrain was a massive help.

I would love to see a huge surge of interest in small scale gaming like this. I think it’s much more impressive to see massive armies on a standard 6x4 table as opposed to 1/4-1/2 at normal game scale
@nidhoggroom3 жыл бұрын
I think you could make it even smaller, for beginners. You only need 1 miniature for each squad/troop + any hero/banner bearer etc. that accomplices it But the single squad miniature piece is set on top of this modular frame to represent it. The more people in the squad, the bigger the frame. And as you play, you have a turn wheel which lessens the overall frame. The turnwheel can have numbers around it, but the top number defines how many are left in the squad. Turning the turnwheel, it could f.ex be attached to strings to each corner and pull it closer, so that the frame diminishes.

My only suggestion is how to stop the warping. I have found that the very thin parcel tape (normally brown) has no 'give' in it, along its length. Apply this in strips on the underside in both up and down and horizontal directions. It is very resistant to linear tension and thus prevents cardboard or foam board from warping. Barry

it's really cool to see more people enjoying 10mm kings of war, i've been playing it ever since the counter charge podcast had an episode about small scale gaming a few years back. while i understand there are many practical reasons for small scale minis- it's cheaper, takes less space, etc- for me it's all about feel. i really love the scale and how it looks on the table. very cinematic. one thing i didn't expect was the smaller scale allows some experimentation. for example, we occasionally play games where we increase the range of missle weapons to something closer to real world scales (we also increase the magic ranges too, although i can't really call it "close to real world scale!") this would be all but impossible at 28mm scale on account of size, but for the 10 mili's it's a nice little twist to the game. for those who don't have access to 3d printers i've gotten my minis from magister militum and pendraken. pendrakens warband minis have an amazing amount of variety as far as poses go.

A quick portable table idea is to buy ABS sheets, in the US you can get 12x12 inch sheets in various thickness. These can be glued with, pipe glue, together and to vinyl sheets (think table cloth but thicker). I made a 3x3 foot table top with this idea. I glue 3 of the squares together to make a 3x1 foot section, then glue it to the vinyl sheet making the table 3x3. This lets me fold the table down to a 3x1 for storage or transportation. ABS is very similar to PS so it takes paint or PVA glue quite well.

There are some great 10mm rules systems out there but you can just scale down 25/28mm game rules and have the benefit of those great rules systems cheaper and more conveniently. The way you painted these 10mm units makes sense and is the way I think most people should approach it but... if you really put a bit more time in you can get amazing results and have visually stunning units. I wish I could remember (or find) the issue. I had planned on making this, but never got around to it. The concept I had was to make a wooden book-style Box that opened up to reveal a folding double-sided foam core board with grass grass on one side and desert on the other (you could make additional types of battlefield boards and swap them out too) under each side were compartments for two armies and epic-scale terrain. I had concept and blueprints drawn for it, just never got around to building it. If you can get your hands on some epic armies, you can make one. "I don't any terrain..." Bloody hell reality really is falling apart haha Speaking of smaller models, I use smaller scales to test out new systems so I'm not spending loads of money on systems I'm unsure about. 15mm is a pretty good starting point, loads of options and its easy to scale down from 28mm because its basically 1/2 the scale that we're used to for both rules and terrain. Works pretty well for skirmish games as well as they can be played on as small as a 2ftx2ft board to simulate pretty large skirmish maps. Great fun. Speaking on the topic of 40K! I've yet to find anyone who can convince me otherwise that normal 40k rules played with 15mm minis or even 6mm minis on 25mm rounds is not the way! The rules make no sense for firefights and artillery and sniping on such a small board set up for what they are supposed to represent. But at a smaller scale using the same measurements etc. suddenly the idea of rolling up with a basilisk to shell a building makes sense! Okay rant over haha

Forest Dragon has a patreon that produces these miniatures. The GumRoad link will allow you to purchase earlier files. Currently, they have finished up Vampire Counts and have begun with a Bretonnian/Chivalry faction. Here's the link: www.patreon.com/forestdragon/posts

Similar reason (among others) which make Epic a superior game to regular 40k.

I definitely want to see more videos of you tarting up that board a bit! There's an entire 'Minihammer' community on Facebook who play classic Warhammer Fantasy in small scales like this, who would really appreciate seeing you try your hand at making terrain to your usual high quality in a scale that fits with this size of game. Not to mention that massive 10mm and 15mm Historicals community.

Pleeeease do this for 40k! I would love to be able to play a smaller scale version. Not to mention being able to introduce friends and family to an easier, more convenient, and far cheaper version. Love ur stuff Luke! Keep up the amazing work!

Epic: Armageddon is my choice for that 6mm figures. Lot of alternative models (e.g. VANGUARDMINIATURES.CO.UK) and also lot of stl files everywhere

10mm or even 6mm scale is the best for how quickly the hobby is and the impressive mass effect; regardless of whether you’re doing small games, or going with a full size table and using hundreds or even thousands of miniatures for the armies.

I would love to see you expand on this stuff!! For years i lurked around in die Minihammer Online Communities bet never got to it. Mostly because of a lack of players in my area but also because it was quite difficult to get alle the needed minis without 3D printer... Soo, whatever idea you have with the downscaling, please go for it!

Dude, this is basically warmaster, I suggest you to have a look at it. Better ruleset in my opinion

Put a bit of stocking over the end of the Hoover when you suck up the grass it will save you a fortune in static grass, plus if you stick all the saved stuff in one jar you get some nice blends

200% see you do this for 40k , there is lots of cool 10/15mm scifi 3d files online , seen some really cool ork stuff ... What do you think the ratio would be for working out base sizes? say like abaddon/DP goes on 60mm bases normally, would you just halve all 40k base sizes for 10mm scale .
@beau50993 жыл бұрын
Any specific places you've seen cool 10mm scifi models? I've mostly only seen 28mm but would love to get some cool 10mm ones to print.

Luke, if you'd given the foamboard a coating of pva on both sides it might have worked in stopping warping. The idea is the pva creates tension evenly on both sides. It works really well on cardboard also.

I’ve war-gamed for over 40 years, and I’ve also gone to small and solo over Coronavirus. I’ve built a wargames board on a lazy suzanne, so I can turn the board around, for each sides turn. Why you ask, well I’m paralysed from my shoulders down and cannot move around a war-games room easily in my wheelchair. I’ve built terrain as well and painted the figures, I’ve started with elements of 28mm figures (A bit like DBA) really enjoying it, but will go down to 10mm, but have a huge collection sell first... love your vids and your no pissing about attitude, great, get on and do just do it. Cheers amigo...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🐿.

Dude, that's just amazing! I'm really loving the smaller scale armies that you made. It's seems so much more simplified when there is no need to make these larger more detailed models. Sure the larger models look great but if you just want to sit down and play, this looks like the way to go. Great Job!

This video speaks to me on several levels. For one, I'm tired of chasing games. I love Warmaster, well that is to say, i love the Old World. There is allot of potential here. Scale down my hobby within hobbies. Secondly the time painting is less. I don't have allot of time. I want to print but my problem is I don't have a heck of allot of space until one of my kids moves out, lol. I did get my friend to print me sample Bretonian models so I'm going to paint them up to see if this will be something I will enjoy. Thank you for posting the vid. I feel inspired.

Outstanding job! and with 3d printing become more common this is a great idea for any table top wargames.

I just got back into Warmaster myself recently after not touching them for 15 years. The new 3D printing models are insane. I was actually going to try some of your basing materials on them eventually and I appreciate the siving tip.

Yes! Looks great and want to see more. I have 10mm ww2, and have just started collecting Napoleonic in this scale. Cheaper and less space and just as much fun. Not got a printer yet so buying from Pendraken.

Those 10mm units came out quite good, especially for a 2k printer. Nice work! I've always been a big proponent of smaller scale wargames because you can fit so much on the table, including expansive towns and castles, and the scale makes ranged weapons seem more realistic, especially for modern weapons and vehicles (rifles, missles, tanks/artillery, etc). I understand why people like 40K's heroic 32-35mm scale, especially those that love painting detailed models, but I'd kill to see W40K Epic return. :) Edit: oh and storage is SO much easier at this scale, especially the terrain!

I've been recently building the small scale scenarios from the Middle-Earth bsg, (Balins tomb, scouring of the shire), because I've been getting back into war gaming but knowing I'm moving in with my girlfriend soon I don't want to take up tones of room. Making a 2' by 2' tomb has had me realise that this is still quite large so for the shire stuff I'm planning to get / make a mat. This though would be great for larger scale warhammer and other games like that I love. Looks like I won't be limited to small squad or 600 points or less gaming stuff now.
@grinningidiot3 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant. I'm moving to Tokyo for college and won't have room to have a gaming space but I could easily so this on my 2x4 kitchen table with a battle mat. Would love to see this with 40k since that's my main game.

Worth it just for that MB photo! Great video, smaller scale 10mm and 6mm is having a resurgence with 3D printers. Truly there time to shine.
@WizardOfDC3 жыл бұрын
definitely love to see a 40k version! This was pretty awesome. If you wood glue the back of your foamboard after it warps from painting it straightens right out. Did this on some pieces I made for my daughter that used foamboard as a larger square base.

Smaller scales are great for Mass Effect! I've been gaming in 15mm, 10mm, 6mm and even 3mm for forty years (!!!) I took a demo game around the shows when Warmaster Ancients came out which used around 2500-3000 figures. Most sets of rules like WH or KoW can be used with an unchanged or downscaled ground scale even if they're written for 28mm. Smaller scales are the only way to get battles that look like battles unless you own a 30 foot table and elastic arms :D
@johnscarr703 жыл бұрын
Quite right. If you want the Pelennor Fields to be more than a large lawn, or that row of Mûmakil to look like an impassable wall, go 2mm!
