In this video I will show you how to remove the 2 stroke mariner oil injection pump drive gear. These older mariner 2 stroke outboard are always failing because of the oil pump gear as it is plastic. All you have to do is remove the drive gear in the oil pump and them put the pump back on. Then mix the 2 stroke oil in the gas. You will then not have to worry about the engine overheating from the wrong oil mixture. This plastic gear is what kills most 2 stroke outboard engines.

Thanks for the good video, I'm rebuilding my 1992 115 L-4 and when pulling it apart I noticed the plastic gear was chewed up , I don't trust oil injection anyway and this video helped!

thanks for the tutorial. I am rebuilding a 115 right now because of that neoprene gear failing and burning up the engine. Not all merch have that plastic gear but in my 51 years as an outboard mechanic I firmly believe now that only Suzuki made a 2 stroke oil injection system that was bullet proof. Merc and OMC with their vro were terrible.

I 100% agree. Only reason for that gear was so the engine you eventually fail.

I have an 89 150 BlackMax - with carbs. I do all my own servicing but I'm not a mechanic by trade. My understanding is the oil pump provides about 90:1 at idle and 50:1 at wide open. (which I like for low smoke reasons) The only issue I just had was the oil lines from the tank to the pump and the pump to the oil T had rotted after 30 years of faultless service . Luckily I caught it during pre season servicing (water pump impeller - steering lube etc). I also once had to do a full rebuild on a friends mid 70's OMC 150 when he forgot to put oil in fuel.

your black max does not have that plastic/neopreme gear on the crank like his does. Merc got sued for doing that at one time if I remember right. They made that gear so it would last about ten to fifteen years and then kill your engine. Preplanned parts designed to fail. All to make sure you needed to buy another engine down the line.

Great video! Thanks for posting this. I see a kink in your fuel line you should try to eliminate. Also have heard that you need an insert in the pump hole to take up the volume of the old pump parts in the crankcase. Otherwise the affected cylinder(s) can be either lean or rich. (I forget which ATM.) What did you do to kill the pump alarm? Just unplug the sensor?

That neopreme gear on the crank was a bright idea merc had to ensure failure so they could sell you a new engine roughly ever ten years. on purpose.

Great video, thank you. I have a 92 Black Max 135 and I am considering doing the "injection" delete also. I am confused though, I thought I read somewhere that there is a magnetic shaft driven Motion Sensor that tells the engine that the oil pump is in fact turning. If that is the case don't I have to do something with that sensor or the wires to fool the engine into believing that everything is still working? Thanks

Mercury 175 hp 1993. can someone guide me in the right direction as to removing the injection system and go to premix like this video. I dont have a clue where to start. thank you.

Thank you..I might be doing this soon to my Mariner 90. Looks like a simple job, so I'm sure it'll be only moderately difficult for me 😀. About how long did that process take you?

I just removed the outlet hose taped of the opening and fed the oil pipe back into the tank . pump still in place but oil just goes around and back into oil container .took 5 minutes now pre mix 50-1

Only problem I have heard with just doing that is that the pump shaft may still be spinning and it won't be lubricated may dry out an seize

@@ToolManTaylor He implying he left his oil tank on with oil in it. So the pump is just recirculating the oil keeping the shaft oiled. I'd rather remove the tank and shaft but his option does sound bad.

@@rolandjacques649 what he did was just make the oil go in a circle yes but that shaft to the crank... gets zero oil now and yes it will kill it sooner or later.

​@@daddski1 How did the shaft get oiled in the first place? If all you alter is the exit point of the oil to another location nether of which had anything to do with the shaft, how is the shaft all of a sudden not being oiled now?

Nice video, I need to replace the gasket at the bottom of my oil pump as it was leaking a bit. When I took off the bottom plate I notice a small pin that came out with it...not sure where this pin goes? There is a small hole in the bottom of the housing next to the screw hole that looks like it will fit, bit not sure what the purpose of it is? Can anyone help???? Thanks!!

I am guessing that I will figure it out, but you didn't actually show the removal of the pump or the reinstall of the pump itself, the rest of the video was pretty good, but that was more conceptual, I wanted to see the removal of the pump itself to see if there were any tricks to that.

You need to buy the oil pump removal kit to hold a brass bushing inside the block

Really I have been running this engine for a few months as per the video without issue. Would the bushing you are talking about just drop into the sump.. I have never heard of the bushing you are mentioning.

@@ToolManTaylor I did the same bypass on my 2002 90 Mercury. Looks very similar. I kept the shaft inside the pump so it still spins but removed the little internal impeller. Works great so far

Are you now 50:1? Just curious about how much more oil you are using- guess it depends how much idling as I was told the pump leans them out until wide open- What oil brand do you run in ole Merc. Thank for video-

Hey Jack, you are correct I am using 50:1 and yes the pump would usually lean out a bit at idle. I don't use the main to troll so hasn't been an issue for me. Been using Lucas Semi-Synthetic 2-Cycle Land & Sea
