About time someone made a video of this. Been doing it for over 50 years. My wife saves any and all syringes for me from the vet etc.. I purchased my first synthetic grease in the early 70's and it lasts pretty much for ever. Why the bearing manufacturers are so cheap with the grease has always puzzled me. They tend to use the cheapest crap they can find. I always do this to new wheel bearings for my Cummins Ram etc as well. Always use the best grease $ can buy.

Just like light bulbs. If the bulb says it will last 990 hours, it will burn out around 990 hours. Back in the 40's or 50's they figured out if they made the filament thinner it will burn out faster and you will continually have to buy new replacement bulbs. I seen videos of some light bulbs from the early 1900's that have been on for over 100 years and still haven't burnt out yet. They make things to break so you have to buy new ones.

I have done this with aircraft bearings on high speed industrial equipment for years. It will work to some extent, but usually removing the seals causes small gaps. Depending on what you're using the bearings for, it's sometimes better to just pull and replace it periodically as opposed to trying to lubricate it. However, car parts don't need to be within as close of tolerances as some other parts, so it will work until the bearings are shot. I have a 30 year old Cub cadet lawnmower that has the original bearings in it, and it's been working fine, so there is some merit to this.

Wow! Did I need this one awhile ago, replaced two idler pulleys on 2 different vehicles as they were noisy, and bought the autoparts replacements (read cheap, even though they charged top dollar for them!) and both are going bad again without that many miles on them! Will do this to the replacements, and hopefully they don't get noisy and start bouncing after a short time. A big thumbs up for another fine video.

I have restored a few old garden tractors. Years ago bearings had a wire snap ring you could remove and the seal would fall out. Clean and re-grease and your good for another 50 years. One thing I do is to remove all the old grease before I fill with new just in case there is contamination and eliminate any compatibility issues with different greases. Good video.
@SweetProjectCars7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great comment, we have done this for many years and have had no issues with compatibility as the new grease pushes out the old grease well enough to make the bearing last way longer than it normally would.

Thank you, for taking the time to make these videos. The timing is perfect. I'm about to remove/replace the bearings in both of my serpentine belt idler pulleys and the belt tensioner pulley. In fact, I have already ordered the bearings and I'm waiting for delivery. I think I'll try to clean out as much of the factory grease as possible and pack in the new. The pulleys for my car are about $70 each. I can replace the bearings for about $4.00 each. It was an easy decision to make! I'm also replacing/treating all of the radiator hoses and serpentine belt with the 303 Protectant you recommended in one of your other videos. This is all part of a major maintenance procedure, which involves a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, gaskets and cooling system flush. If the main shaft pulley (damper pulley, harmonic balancer, whatever, etc) shows wear, it will be changed as well. Thanks, again! Jim

I’ve removed seals on brand new high quality bearings and had sore eyes looking for grease, I always regrease bearings before fitting them I’ve even used syringes to inject grease because oil won’t last long!
@mitbener68057 жыл бұрын
This is a good tip, and we have been doing this for a few years. We use a high temp bearing grease in a grease gun and use a needle to get right inside. Then add a few drops of lucas/moreys and it blends with the grease and makes it sticky so it doesn't get thrown out. Works well.

Great tip. So simple that everyone should know it and do it but most don't. I've never really thought about greasing a sealed bearing before but I will now. I've used a needle on my grease gun for ball joints and other places that should, but don't have grease fittings on them. Just pull back the boot or put a little hole in it. Makes sense to do the same for bearings. Thanks for the video.

I've done this on all sealed bearings. It does work! Any time I've got to replace a sealed bearing like on a auto or mower I pack em full of grease. It really pays off to do this on mower deck spindles. Also the syringe trick is good to lubricate the factor front end parts such as the upper and lower ball joints and tie rods. Most of them are sealed. The replacements have a grease fitting on em. The sealed ones do not. I like this guy's videos.

i can't believe you are the first person i have seen do the same exact thing i have been doing for years. i use GREEN GREASE but MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC is just as good. you may want to try SEA FOAM DEEP CREEP as your syringe lubricant. you can lubricate electric motor bearings with synthetic grease instead of oil but you have to add a little oil because some electrics have a hard time getting started. another tip i want to add is when buying chinese made power tools like from HF you need to remove the gear drive part of the tool and remove as much of the usually brown cheap grease and replace with MOBILE 1 or GREEN GREASE. try using some synthetic oil like a 5w20 full synthetic for you traditional oil spout can. you would think 3in1 would have sythetic oil but they don't.

I've had problems when I over packed bearings, excessive friction, leaks, oozing melted grease. So far I've re packed inline skates, eccentric bearings on sanders, grinder bearings etc. Love having a tool work and work without breakdown., especially tools that are not made well anymore. My Austrian random orbit sander goes through hell and back, ten years of service and still kicking.

Will this process work on sealed bearings that are already screaming??

Hey Mike, good thing I checked the other Mercs, my daughters idler pulley disintegrated while taking it off!! Have one question... is it possible to pack the bearings too much? I assumed if the grease squeezes out when putting back together a little thats fine. They don't spin easily by hand but the front end sure is quiet now with the new ones in.
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave good to hear from you again we pack them tight when we press and seal back in any extra grease comes out and when you spin it a few times the extra comes out as well we’ve never had an issue with over packing them and we pack and pretty tight

What was that bearing used on ? What car/model ? I don't know if you can pop out that bearing shield on a lot of those idler pulleys. Will that work on all of them? Thanks

Hello Tony if I remember right that bearing was for a range rover it will work on most all cars we have not found one yet that we have done out of hundreds that we have not been able to do hope this helps have a great night

Thanks for the reply SPC. Ok, I just got my new idler pulley's for my 97 JGC One of the org pulleys failed (chewed up the pulley bracket) I looked at the org pulley that was still good but those were metal type bearing shields. I couldn't pop those out but the NEW pulley's..no problem getting the shields off. I noticed the grease in the new pulley's (white like you show in the vid) I don't plan on swapping out the grease right away. I did look at the Mobil 1 grease temp specs -40 C (- 40 F) to 150 C (302 F) I'll use this and remove both sides of the bearing shields and pack it when I'm ready. Your vid was a great tip SPC.. ! Take Care

To add to your cool video advice, if the bearings are already worn out or iffy, to replace the sealed bearings, you don't have to replace the entire pricey pulley wheel bearings unit the auto parts stores want to sell you: If the pulley wheel is made from metal or plastic(that is not worn down or broken) And If it's the design that allows the sealed bearing to be hammered tapped out of it from one direction. Because new sealed bearings are inexpensive(just a few dollars a piece) and many seem to be this common size and strength rating that's ample, available on such places as eBay, (handy 10 pack can be a great buy): "6203 2RS" "17 x 40 x 12". You can even google and read about sealed bearings and how they are use strength rated and sized and labeled. Read the rating and size of your old bearing that's engraved in its seal cover, you may find it's the same size or a size you can purchase. Take care

True. Good Japanese one are reasonably priced. Just need to press out the old and reinsert the new. For that we need a press or a large enough socket or to source a shop to do it.

Will it be ok if the bearing is already making noise?
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
Best is to replace the bearing then do this process to the new bearings and you will not have to worry about it again but you can repack the bearing you have making the noise and it will definitely help it

There's no better feeling than extending the life of a component on your car knowing that your money stays in our pockets instead of the greedy car manufacturers and parts store's pockets. A bonus is it's good for the environment because no part needs to be built that requires using money/fuel to mine the metal to make the part, oil to make the plastic portion of it...fuel to deliver the part to your doorstep or parts store and the old part doesn't get chucked into the garbage then the landfill. Some people recycle the parts but still it takes fuel to transport to the recycler, and fuel to melt the metal down to make something else out of it. I'm going to try the oil injection into the idler pully but going to see if I can squeeze some 5-30 synthetic through the needle. I've already pumped some CRC grease into my tie rod ends and ball joints using a grease gun equipped with a needle. Then sealed the tiny hole with super glue and after it dried a layer of blue silicone adhesive over that. Great results so far. Thanks for the tips...
