Manufacturers use a low cost inferior white lithium grease and that just does not hold up. So we show you how to re-pack the bearings you have on your drive pulleys, including the idler pulley, tensioner pulley and so forth. With a little effort, you can make your sealed bearings last a lifetime by using a high-quality SYNTHETIC grease. This Process will also show you how to stop a SQUEAKING pulley to gain some more life out of it.
Hello Everyone, SWEET PROJECT CARS here with cool, trick and affordable ways to do things for the DIYER'S OF THE UNIVERSE!

I have done this with aircraft bearings on high speed industrial equipment for years. It will work to some extent, but usually removing the seals causes small gaps. Depending on what you're using the bearings for, it's sometimes better to just pull and replace it periodically as opposed to trying to lubricate it. However, car parts don't need to be within as close of tolerances as some other parts, so it will work until the bearings are shot. I have a 30 year old Cub cadet lawnmower that has the original bearings in it, and it's been working fine, so there is some merit to this.

About time someone made a video of this. Been doing it for over 50 years. My wife saves any and all syringes for me from the vet etc.. I purchased my first synthetic grease in the early 70's and it lasts pretty much for ever. Why the bearing manufacturers are so cheap with the grease has always puzzled me. They tend to use the cheapest crap they can find. I always do this to new wheel bearings for my Cummins Ram etc as well. Always use the best grease $ can buy.

Just like light bulbs. If the bulb says it will last 990 hours, it will burn out around 990 hours. Back in the 40's or 50's they figured out if they made the filament thinner it will burn out faster and you will continually have to buy new replacement bulbs. I seen videos of some light bulbs from the early 1900's that have been on for over 100 years and still haven't burnt out yet. They make things to break so you have to buy new ones.

Wow! Did I need this one awhile ago, replaced two idler pulleys on 2 different vehicles as they were noisy, and bought the autoparts replacements (read cheap, even though they charged top dollar for them!) and both are going bad again without that many miles on them! Will do this to the replacements, and hopefully they don't get noisy and start bouncing after a short time. A big thumbs up for another fine video.

I have restored a few old garden tractors. Years ago bearings had a wire snap ring you could remove and the seal would fall out. Clean and re-grease and your good for another 50 years. One thing I do is to remove all the old grease before I fill with new just in case there is contamination and eliminate any compatibility issues with different greases. Good video.
@SweetProjectCars
@SweetProjectCars 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great comment, we have done this for many years and have had no issues with compatibility as the new grease pushes out the old grease well enough to make the bearing last way longer than it normally would.

Thank you, for taking the time to make these videos. The timing is perfect. I'm about to remove/replace the bearings in both of my serpentine belt idler pulleys and the belt tensioner pulley. In fact, I have already ordered the bearings and I'm waiting for delivery. I think I'll try to clean out as much of the factory grease as possible and pack in the new. The pulleys for my car are about $70 each. I can replace the bearings for about $4.00 each. It was an easy decision to make! I'm also replacing/treating all of the radiator hoses and serpentine belt with the 303 Protectant you recommended in one of your other videos. This is all part of a major maintenance procedure, which involves a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, gaskets and cooling system flush. If the main shaft pulley (damper pulley, harmonic balancer, whatever, etc) shows wear, it will be changed as well. Thanks, again! Jim

I've done this on all sealed bearings. It does work! Any time I've got to replace a sealed bearing like on a auto or mower I pack em full of grease. It really pays off to do this on mower deck spindles. Also the syringe trick is good to lubricate the factor front end parts such as the upper and lower ball joints and tie rods. Most of them are sealed. The replacements have a grease fitting on em. The sealed ones do not. I like this guy's videos.

This is a good tip, and we have been doing this for a few years. We use a high temp bearing grease in a grease gun and use a needle to get right inside. Then add a few drops of lucas/moreys and it blends with the grease and makes it sticky so it doesn't get thrown out. Works well.

Great tip. So simple that everyone should know it and do it but most don't. I've never really thought about greasing a sealed bearing before but I will now. I've used a needle on my grease gun for ball joints and other places that should, but don't have grease fittings on them. Just pull back the boot or put a little hole in it. Makes sense to do the same for bearings. Thanks for the video.

A bonus is it's good for the environment because no part needs to be built that requires using money/fuel to mine the metal to make the part, oil to make the plastic portion of it...fuel to deliver the part to your doorstep or parts store and the old part doesn't get chucked into the garbage then the landfill. Some people recycle the parts but still it takes fuel to transport to the recycler, and fuel to melt the metal down to make something else out of it. I'm going to try the oil injection into the idler pully but going to see if I can squeeze some 5-30 synthetic through the needle. I've already pumped some CRC grease into my tie rod ends and ball joints using a grease gun equipped with a needle. Then sealed the tiny hole with super glue and after it dried a layer of blue silicone adhesive over that. Great results so far. Thanks for the tips...

I've had problems when I over packed bearings, excessive friction, leaks, oozing melted grease. So far I've re packed inline skates, eccentric bearings on sanders, grinder bearings etc. Love having a tool work and work without breakdown., especially tools that are not made well anymore. My Austrian random orbit sander goes through hell and back, ten years of service and still kicking.

I never use a small brush to load the bearing. Go to your farm supply store, get a grease needle, it will allow the grease to be squirted into the bearing as does Suringe.

We are doing the same thing with mower spindles with sealed bearings. Have been using Primerose synthetic high temp waterproof grease with extremely good success ! Unfortunately, you are absolutely correct, sealed bearings are intended to fall ! We literally pack our bearings the old fashioned way, and replace the seals when we complete the process.

i can't believe you are the first person i have seen do the same exact thing i have been doing for years. i use GREEN GREASE but MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC is just as good. you may want to try SEA FOAM DEEP CREEP as your syringe lubricant. you can lubricate electric motor bearings with synthetic grease instead of oil but you have to add a little oil because some electrics have a hard time getting started. another tip i want to add is when buying chinese made power tools like from HF you need to remove the gear drive part of the tool and remove as much of the usually brown cheap grease and replace with MOBILE 1 or GREEN GREASE. try using some synthetic oil like a 5w20 full synthetic for you traditional oil spout can. you would think 3in1 would have sythetic oil but they don't.

I thought for sure, you were going to soak the seal in 303 rubber treatment! Might actually work, I agree with you on the cheap grease! the second I always thought it was the seal failing that let dirt in that killed the bearing!

To add to your cool video advice, if the bearings are already worn out or iffy, to replace the sealed bearings, you don't have to replace the entire pricey pulley wheel bearings unit the auto parts stores want to sell you: If the pulley wheel is made from metal or plastic(that is not worn down or broken) And If it's the design that allows the sealed bearing to be hammered tapped out of it from one direction. Because new sealed bearings are inexpensive(just a few dollars a piece) and many seem to be this common size and strength rating that's ample, available on such places as eBay, (handy 10 pack can be a great buy): "6203 2RS" "17 x 40 x 12". You can even google and read about sealed bearings and how they are use strength rated and sized and labeled. Read the rating and size of your old bearing that's engraved in its seal cover, you may find it's the same size or a size you can purchase. Take care

I did that every 100,000 miles on my S-10 the engine to the pulleys and alternator .then 300,264 the engine died .plus a more severe application needing lots of greasing is lawn tractor quill and idlers . plus your sleeve bearing motors can go many years with oiling . I have a personal fan I fixed in 1975 and with cleaning and high grade oil its still working great 42 years later

Great video, just one comment - I was committed to M1 Synthetic for all my grease applications years ago, but over time found that it separated much worse than any grease I’ve used. On trailer wheel bearings, I’d find oil trails running down the lower half of the wheels after sitting awhile; I had to keep my grease guns in buckets to catch all the oil leaking out of them. So I’ve switched over to Super Lube Synthetic, we’ll see in time if it’s a reasonable substitute.

Thank you, great video. Love your work. 2 Questions. 1. Is it only worth it to apply the bearing grease to new pulleys? Any reason not to remove the ones already on the car and apply bearing grease them when doing a belt change, etc? Seems a lot longer lasting than the syringe method. 2. Is there anything lithium grease is best for that you would use it for or is it always going to be outmatched by another grease in every application ?
@SweetProjectCars
@SweetProjectCars 3 жыл бұрын
No, you can do your pulleys anytime you can get to them, new or used. The second part of your question, we love lithium grease, we use it on many things and we also love full synthetic wheel bearing grease. Hope this helps my friend! l've had to do this to 2 different belt tension pulleys that l had to replace, in both cases the new pulleys came with virtually no grease on them. l was shocked and a bit pissed at the same time, but to be perfectly honest with you, it almost seemed it was done on purpose to insure that you will need to come back for more bearings once the new ones with almost no grease on them end up failing. l was almost going to return them but then l realized that wouldn't get me anywhere, more new ones could be the same, and what made the most sense was to just keep the new ones but apply grease myself, which l did, and the grease l used was way superior (Red Line synthetic CV-2 high temp red grease) as compared to the few drops of white lithium grease that the new pulleys came with. One of those pulleys now has over 100,000 miles on it since l packed it with the red grease and still spins smooth as butter, no sound at all.

Thanks for the continuing great money saving tips. In some places you will need a prescription to get a hypodermic needle. I wonder how we get around that issue? Another issue is what happens if too much grease is packed into the bearing? Won't the expanding grease push out the seals?

William we have never had an issue obtaining syringes we get them from our pharmacy or our vet..as far as the grease coming out we have never had that issue either...once you spin the bearing a few times by hand the excess if any will come out. Thank you and thanks for being here with us :)
