Great episode! And perfect timing for me - I'm planning a mobile livestreaming flypack to allow broadcasts from just about anywhere. It is great to have options. Until this video, YoloBox was not even under consideration.

BTW - to take this a step further, broadcast location is a huge factor. Frankly, I need all connections to be 100% cell data, so I'm looking to aggregate multiple cell carriers. Also, I want to livestream from rural locations, which is a completely different situation. For this, video production is too much of a niche as a target market for cell data solutions. Go down this rabbit hole and you wind up looking at mobile routers from companies that are specialized to either law enforcement/ems or RV mobile. Another side effect is the SIM card option of the YoloBox Pro is not very interesting without a discussion of external cell data antennas. For really robust streaming solutions that rely on cell data, you are going to need to get focused on the cell data solutions that fit upstream of the YoloBox. A few hints for anyone on this journey, as I am: InstyConnect seems to be one of the more robust antenna systems. There's Starlink to consider. Teradek has competing solutions that are perhaps more established for commercial work, but nearly as important, they have a cell data agreement with Canadian company Telna that offers a network-diverse SIM card that is not a consumer-level solution. The Telna SIM has a cross-networking agreement so that their cards work with multiple wireless carriers around the world. Also, the Telna cards are never throttled, something that is nearly impossible to root out of the fine print and realities of consumer cell service contracts. I could go on - I've forgotten other points as I've typed this. For producers like me who plan to stream from a wide variety of locations and different regions of the country, you will find the mobile connectivity landscape is constantly changing. Pay attention to the date of KZbin videos because cell data offerings can be out of date in short order. Starlink pricing, coverage, mobility, and availability is volatile. Right now, from an RV video published only days ago, T-Mobile is reported to have a particularly strong data hotspot offering. But for professional use, you have to really pay attention because some of these consumer plans for motorhomes and such can have severe throttling during certain hours of the day, such as evenings when everybody in a campground may want to watch Netflix all at the same time. You are well advised to avoid consumer retail sales channels if robust network connections are essential. For instance, Verizon has SIM cards with no data limits and no throttling, but the people at retail do not know about them. My company has commercial accounts with Verizon, so I was able to access these products. Verizon is important to me due to better rural coverage in the middle of nowhere America, but the ideal thing is to bond multiple networks. In the boondocks like I operate, this can mean multiple directional antennas, a site survey, each pointed at a specific cell tower and hard locked to the strongest channel on that tower. Professional video over wireless systems is not a trivial activity and cannot be solved by buying the "right" equipment. It requires a high level of expertise and an engineering mindset.

Aaron, outstanding job on this video! Your video and tests are amazing, so well done. Thank you!!! I was so so so happy that Yolo made this update when I saw their newsletter come in. I do video for our local Honor Flight to Washington DC and I have the Yolo mini to do live feeds for the family and people back home to watch them. I got the mini because I have a sponsor for the stream and needed to have their logo on the bottom of the screen. It was the second trip I used it for and was running into all sorts of buffering issues on the trip last month. I started googling a battery powered way to do some bonding... and then Yolo knocks it out of the park with this update. What a great company! Hopefully they will add this feature to the mini. Our next flight is in September, so maybe. Their pricing for the service is great too.

Excellent video. I've been using bonding on the mini throughout the beta. It's worked very well. My use case is using the internal Sim card on T-Mobile connected with my iPhone (Verizon) hotspot on Wi-Fi. Before the iPhone I was using a mobile hotspot through the ethernet port which also worked well.

Great in-depth review, the charts make everything super clear and easy to follow along with each scenario. Thank you for that. I wonder if YoloLiv will ever implement a "offline" card for when all bonded connections drop? When IRL streaming in Australia (from a moving vehicle) we often come upon areas with zero 4G coverage and when that occurs KZbin creates a new stream for each time we connect and reconnect. If YoloLiv could "recognise" no data incoming and revert to a "on hold" card, that would ensure the resulting feed is one long, continuous stream. Thoughts?

I've watched soooo many videos regarding bonding from teradek, liveusolo etc but never have any of them done thorough tests to showcase the situations in which bonding shines through. This was incredibly helpful. One question; did you use different ISPs for the different internet connections? I heard this was a highly recommended approach. I don't pay for yolocast but this feature alone is why I will now be paying.

Thank you! For this test it's using the same Fiber ISP for both, but since each connection is going thru a different router in my studio, it's effectively the same as having two ISPs.

Great video and REALLY great product from Yolo. One thing you didn't mention was how you managed the bandwidth and simulated the packet loss. Is that option built in to the YoloBox?

The simulated packet loss is effectively real, it's being done by a separate router in my studio. I'm planning on going into more detail about it but it seemed a bit out of scope for this video

Fantastic.. thank you for running the test. What is the user experience like with the Yolo bonding service? I own a Teradek Wave and have had good bonding experiences, but they discontinued the model after just 1 year, and ppl seem to often have issues with their cloud servers (Core) not starting.

@@aaronpk awesome! I'm seriously considering adding this to my toolset.. been eyeballing Yolobox for years but a few bad user experiences scared me off -- and I needed the extra inputs of the ATEM Extreme. Both would work well together .. I could use the Yolo for titling and bonding and the other for sources.. love it! Wondering in a network environment, what ports need to be opened to connect with YoloLiv and the bonding server? Have you tried controlling the Yolo with a Streamdeck?

Hey Aaron, I had the Atem mini, great piece of gear. And I learned a lot on how to use it thanks to you. Unfortunately, during the pandemic I had to sell it. Now, I'm looking for a solution like the Atem but just for 2 cameras, not 4, nor 1. Any suggestion? Thanks!

There is a sale on the ATEM Mini series for 20% off through the end of the month, so the ATEM Mini Pro ISO is $395 right now, so it's a pretty good price. You can also probably find an original ATEM Mini for under $300 now too. As far as I know, the only switcher with less than 4 inputs is the Roland V-02 HD, which is also $299: amzn.to/3r212lo I still think Blackmagic should make an ATEM Nano with just 2 inputs!

I would be interested to see how this compares to typical SDN solutions from companies like PepLink, versus BYO solutions like Speedify. Especially as those streams get bigger with larger screen sizes, higher color fidelity, and less compression. Can you do 4k60p? How well does it handle three or four streaming paths?

It's a custom built linux PC with 3 network cards, the main software that does the "chaos routing" is called "Linux Traffic Control" or `tc`. There's a nice web GUI that someone wrote for it that's on GitHub. So, half and half I guess. Oh, and then also some very careful wiring and network configuration in the rest of my network to be able to use it with arbitrary devices on my network.

I'm an arborist that is trying to live stream my work, I've set up th spreezy budget irl kit but I struggle to keep it working. I've been using just the gopro app but the stream always seems to die. It's super frustrating, anyways I'm considering getting the yololiv mini but can find any protective cases for it. Does it come with plugs in the ports that I could keep in to protect them from sawdust and realistically do you think the mini is durable enough. I'd have to keep it in a pouch on my work belt.
@aaronpk
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
oh yeah I would not recommend a GoPro for that sadly. This isn't exactly the same thing, but I have another video all about problems with the GoPro: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZbdgaJ5ZcmBo5Y That sounds like a rough environment for any gear though and it's really too bad the GoPro isn't up to the task. YC Onion makes a metal cage for the YoloBox Mini, but it's not exactly protective in the way that you might need. At the very least you'd also need a cover for the touch screen and I haven't seen any products like that on the market. The yolobox also doesn't come with any protective covers for the slots you aren't using, but you can probably find some third party ones easily. I did notice that the Spreezy kit mentions using an external HDMI encoder instead of the GoPro streaming app, which I definitely believe will give you better results than the GoPro app itself. It might be worth trying that again. Sounds like a fun project and I hope you can find something that works!

Boy, this really seems great and less expensive than the other options that are out there. I often find myself in the scenario where I have a really decent hardline (ethernet) connection but on occasion there can be a hiccup. My question is, can you set priorities, such as saying, "use the ethernet connection, unless it falls below X bandwidth than go to WiFi. And use that unless the two fall below a certain bandwidth, than go to cellular?" or something to that effect????
