Stu, that’s correct... closed outside Aluminum angle towards the Ocean... open portion of Aluminum angle towards Beach. That way the open angle acts like a shovel versus a plow and holds better when Sharks get hungry.. keep drag on reel light too so Rod doesn’t Torpedo out of Sand Pike.

Great tip...if you would like to flare out the pvc pipe on the end take your heat gun heat up the pvc take a corona beer bottle and press it in. You may have to repeat a couple times to get the flair you want.....works well on schedule 40

Well, I just got home from the hardware store with the ingredients. They didn’t have 1/4” x 3 1/2” bolts. Only 3” and 4”. I got the 3”. We will see how that goes. Do you put the bolt through the corner of the aluminum angle or through one of the flat sides? Do you have a preference if the nut goes on the aluminum angle side or the PVC side? I bought nylon nuts. I also got nylon washers but I can get galvanized washers if that is the way to go. I friend is going to loan me a chop saw with a carbide blade to make short work of those aluminum angles but also cleaner cuts on the 2” PVC. I’ll knock these out tomorrow morning. Jeff, just use the 4 inch bolts and cut off excess with hacksaw and file off any burrs afterwards. I usually put the nut on the plastic pipe side of the connection. After installing nut and tightening, you can also wrap some heavy duty duck tape around the bolt head and nut so it doesn’t snag any clothing during operation. The hole gets drilled right into the corner of the aluminum angle. Iron. Only use heavy duty duck tape to connect the top portion of the pipe to the angle iron.

Why not use 1-1/2” PVC for a slightly snugger fit? The rods can easily fit.

The butts of my surf rods are 24” to 25”. Why only 12” from the top of the PVC to the bolt?

Shu, when you get into a school of pompano you want to be able to snatch that surf rod out of its holder Quickly. A longer pipe or a snug fit would be bad news when you go to grab it out on the run. Mr Shark will get to that Pomp before you do if you’re not quick enough.

I wonder, instead of sanding the inside, could you dip it in Plastidip to coat the rough surface.

It’s not so much rough as it is the sharp edge of the PVC pipe that will damage your Surf Rods Putting them in there a few hundred times a week. By sanding the inside edge of the PVC to a taper it makes for smooth entry for the Surf Rods.

if I wanted to make them sticking out of the sand taller, like say 5' holders, should I go up to say 3/8 or 5/16 metal for the spike?

JM, There is no need to go up that tall... you want to be able to run up to any rod with a bite and to be able to quickly pick it out of the holder so you don’t lose the fish.

JM, use 12ft rods minimum.. they’ll be able to walk under no problem. Keep your rods about about 30 ft from surf to protect reels.

Also the higher the rod sits the better it avoids the crashing waves and weed. If the drag or clicker /baitrunner is set then no need to run and rip the hooks from the mouth of a fish of a life time.

If you made the PVC a little longer you could use 2 bolts to hold it on. Why spend all that money just to use tape to hold it? If nothing else use a U bolt or even better a hose clamp.

Gene, I use the Gorilla duct tape for a few reasons. When I get to my surf rod I remove it very quickly and don’t want anything nicking the padded handle. I also don’t have to worry about anything on the outside snagging my clothing. Never underestimate the power of adhesives.. they held the tiles on the Space Shuttle.
