So I use a LiDAR scanner for work to make 3D models, I can tell you the best surfaces for LiDAR are retroreflective. Mirrors and material that absorbs alot of light are very bad. The LiDAR emitter and receiver are right next to each other, so light has to be reflected back to the source, which is why retroreflectors work so well, and why mirrors don't work at all. For most materials that scatter light in all directions, you want it to scatter as much light that hits it without absorbing too much. The LiDAR they are using is orders of magnitudes cheaper then what I use, so your mileage may vary, but for calibration try using a retroreflective piece of tape on a wall, and same for shots where its having a hard time focusing, put a piece of retroreflective tape on the subject where you want the focal plane to be, even a small piece should have such a high intensity value that it blows out the averaging the software is doing and it should lock focusing on the retroreflector. Mist, fog, dust and similar don't play nice with LiDAR as you found out lol Hope this helps.

Super valuable!! Thank you so much for dropping the real science on this!!! If you have any other ideas, fabrics or broad spectrum sunblock that may help, let us know. I'll pin the info here. The idea of having some more tools to make this work better, without compromising the shot--- reflective tape would be great, but how would you hide it on the subject? Thanks yo!
@KlockworXMusic
@KlockworXMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL No problem, honestly thought this would just get washed out in the sea of comments. I will give you a bit more insight and the method I would use to test this. We use retroreflective paint and tape for reference measurements and for locking in surveyed points. We do this because LiDAR reports intensity values along with distance, and when we adjust our point clouds for intensity, our reference markers have way higher intensity and stand out. I would start by getting a roll of retroreflective tape and seeing how it reacts to it and with different sized pieces. If it works well there is retroreflective fabric paint, you could use this to go over a design on a piece of clothing with it, that way it's visible for the LiDAR but doesn't look out of place for the shot. My favourite jacket has a mining company logo in this type of fabric paint on it, and when I wear it into public bathrooms, it will set off all of the hands free sinks, soap dispensers, and hand dryers simultaneously; this was also very spooky at first. The nice thing with retroreflectives is they shouldn't bother the camera and the shot, since they send light back to the source, assuming your light source isn't very close to the camera, they shouldn't show up on camera as a bright spot. If you try this out, post a reply, I would be interested in how it turns out. One last note, if you are curious figuring out what materials work and what don't, since you seem reasonably tech savvy, you can get a single point LiDAR like a TFMini for like $20, add your microcontroller of choice and some code, and a display to have it display its intensity values. Then from a similar distance each time, point it at different materials and check intensity. Higher intensity values, the better it will be for LiDAR.

Would be cool if it could temporarily change the light color to something in the visible light spectrum, so you can make sure you and the sensor are pointing the same way by looking at the screen. I could easily see the angle being off slightly due to how it sits in the shoe.

I suspect the issue with things like brick and concrete is not absorption but diffraction. Tiny imperfections in the brick, bumps, holes, even some that are probably close to microscopic, are going to be very close to the wavelength of the IR. Imagine what happens if you shoot a watergun at a window screen - The water will turn from a steady stream to a cone of mist - the same thing is happening to the IR against those surfaces - it is reflecting - but it's not reflecting efficiently enough for the sensor to read it.

Two small cheap cameras can be used instead of infrared. The principle of operation is the same as that of human eyes and the technology of the old rangefinder camera. It's just that the cameras need to turn quickly to each other, and the software needs to recognize where the images overlap. This also makes it possible to detect faces. As well as for fixing the focus on a specific point. Another very cheap and simple option is to use ultrasound, the problem with it is that the device will not detect small objects and will always focus on the background.

Try searching for a Total station prism I think it could work out to help focusing. The total stations use a laser in the same concept as LiDAR. The laser shoots from the TS to the prism and reflects back to the machine to tell you the exact distance etc. Leica is the manufacturer of the equipment I use. If you have a friend in construction/civil/earthworks they should be able to help you out. There is also a mini prism which can fit in the palm of your hand.

technical gripe here; TOF is not LiDAR, they're separate technologies. TOF is basically the kind of depth sensor you'd see on iphones BEFORE they put in the LiDAR sensor. fixed light sensors (like kinect) project and track infrared light fields, TOF sensors on modern smartphones use infrared pulses (kind of like echolocation) and LIDAR is basically a laser reconstruction. The distinction is important because you might find with multiple cameras with multiple TOF focus systems they could interfere with each other and your shot could get fucked up.

For being in its infancy stage, there is really cool potential with this. Granted, I'm still very new to creating film and video myself, but seeing where this will go definitely gives me a lot of ideas for future projects. As well as where I save for certain products. In regards to the haze being in the way, it might be an intriguing idea for DJI to reach out to various marine biologists and biologists to research how whales and bats process echolocation to find their way between travel and food. After that combined research, DJI could then find a way to code that into the LiDAR-based tech to improve how low end sensors can pinpoint harder surfaces as the focal point for shots that have haze, fog, smoke or anything that may get in the way of a focused shot or clip. Really cool to see the test footage with older lenses. Thank you!

The soft push ins and outs might be rested to the motor’s inability to move the lens fast enough to keep up with your moves. You can see in most instances of your tests, the focus was sharp a moment after landing at the end point. This is a common problem with any remote focus system.

What lenses do you recommend I add this unit to? I'm building a kit. I want a box full of dusty interesting lenses and to do a video on adding autofocus to them. The cheaper and more interesting shaped the better.

@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL I am not sure I can really recommend something to you, according to your knowledge, and as I am nowadays a large and medium format film photographer, acting in video and trying to use these monsters recently in my video creations. But for the smaller lenses fitting 24x36, I was trying to autofocus the Гелиос 40-2 85 MM F/1.5 (Helios, Ukrainian lens) recently, but the focus ring was too stiff (using the Zhiyun focus motor, may be weaker than djis'), I am now dismantling it for a CLA. I had a great experience with the Asahi SMC Takumar 50mm /1.4, which is a gem, small, but not particularly "interestingly shaped". My next goal would be the medium film format lenses Pentax SMC 67 45mm 1.4 and of course my Pentax SMC 67 105mm / 2.4. But these are already very specific narrow angles when converted. I am trying to work on a system that would be able to focus small barel lenses, I have fantastic copper ones, placing them on a cranted "chariot" which would be actionned by the focus motor. But that's not really ready yet ha ha ha Thanks so much for all your work and creation shares!

So good! And as much as I love the concept, I’m way more excited about those rebodied vintage lenses 🤤
