Use a RGBW LED with a dimmer. Tunable light so you can choose the Lumen temperature. Comes in a bulb or tape or rope. If you use tape you can hide it surrounding the opening. Or put the light in the back and use a frosted acrylic pane in front of it. With the Red Green Blue and White you can change to any color.

Fit socket to end of each nook. Then get short length cluster fairy lights in warm LEDs, green or black cabling. Plug fairy lights into socket ball up fairy lights and place in the nook hiding the socket. It'll look amazing and you can change fairy lights out easily. Edit. Turned out really good. I like the way it features a view of wall construction rather than just pretty lighting.

Never underestimate what lifhting can do. And in saying that its an art and science knowing how to light an area. We used a sheet of 1/4 inch plastic and cut it to size and put in front of the light for something similar in our house. The fitted plastic helps decrease the blinding from the light bulb, but still shows the depth and uniqueness of the lighting area, while helping to decrease dust and drafts. The light in the wall is nice when you only need a little bit of light or a night light. We love ours.
