Removing an Old Tabique Stud Wall (and Kitten Update)

The upstairs work to replace the old floor continues… The next stage of the project is to remove an internal stud wall that originally separated the small upstairs kitchen from the room with lots of windows at the top of the stairs.
This wall is not supporting the roof above and is built in an old Portuguese construction called tabique. A series of wood uprights sit between a floor plate and a wall plate - much like a modern stud wall but much more sturdy and without any insulation. The wall was covered in wooden laths and lime plastered over.

Guys, you melt my hart with your kittens. Tricoloured cats (un Spain web called carey cats) are overwhelmingly female. Only about one in 3,000 is a male. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of lath and plaster repair work to come … all the remaining internal walls upstairs. We’ll have to cut new laths for them, but they’ll all be done the old way 😃

There's one that will be absolutely gorgeous fully grown, the black, orange distinct patches with the white belly. Beautiful. I enjoy these videos because we see what needs to be done with each project, and the two of you actually doing the work! There are videos of people in similar situations whom I would call "dabblers", who do little bits on camera, while the rest of the work either was already in place or magically appears. I presume that with a functioning heat pump you might plan to spend next winter in the lower floor of the house rather than in your tent.

One month after buying our renovation near Poiares we discovered 4 kittens and a Mamma cat. That was two years ago. Lots of cuteness, delay, stress and costs, but what you gonna do ! All our 5 still around using the place like a hotel. Congratulations and sympathy, we haven't been on holiday together since. But well done.

KITTENS !!! Yup been there , done that! Here in France I have rescued ,raised and rehomed several, also kept quite a few 😻. Mostly try to limit the indoor cats to three (very difficult) trapped the outdoor (feral) with humane cages, very successful. Have a great relationship with our Vet ! I think we must have funded the recent renovation of the surgery !! I always know when new kittens are on the horizon as I dream about them, weird I know but true. As a rule gingers are usually male and calico are usually female, but of course there’s always an exception. Might you be keeping one or two ? Calicos are very lucky and also affectionate. As a former breeder of siamese kittens I know how much time they take up, feeding, training etc. So distracting but so enjoyable and of course there is the vet bills but I think not expensive in Portugal whereas in the UK sky high. Good luck with what work you manage to achieve anyway 😊

So we started with 2 cats but slowly but surely, we expanded to what we have now. We have 12 indoor cats which includes 4 kittens and 30 outdoor cats which includes 5 kittens. The best toys that we have found are tinfoil balls (about golf ball size crushed so that they are really hard) and a large sturdy cardboard box. The box with the flaps pressed in will allow them to learn to balance, they will play hide and seek in/on it. It's also a great tool to help them when they are cutting teeth and also sharpen the little claws. You can expect the box to last about a month as they rip it to shreds. I take it you're using the communal method to feed them (as few dishes as possible). You might find seperate dishes might help at feeding time, you would need to scatter the dishes as if they are close together then they will try and eat someone else's food. If you do the above with the dishes, then try to feed the same kitten in the same place every time (after a few days they will know the feeding spot and might sit at it waiting for you to feed it). I was stunned by how much of the doorjamb was just dust, what a good job you found it. I thought you had already got rid of the wormy wood, it might be a good idea to "tap" a few mre bits of timber that is left..... just in case. Thanks for posting
