Make Something

Күн бұрын

Alex from ThisWoodwork and Steve from Woodworking for Mere Mortals challenged their viewers to make something that represents their town, state or country. This is the shape of Ohio made from the numbers 4-1-9. 4-1-9 is the telephone area code of Toledo. Toledo is also known as the Glass City because of it’s long history of making glass and innovation in the glass industry. I wanted to represent that glass heritage in this piece as the background. I'm in Virginia. Too bad peanuts don't grow on trees. Something made from peanut wood could be nice ;) Don't get me started on Virginia Ham trees.

i would try to use something other than hot glue. because depending on where the picture is placed it's possible that mere sunlight coming through a window or just a warm house in general could be enough to soften the glue and cause the numbers to fall off. I gotta think that some sort of gap-filling CA glue might be better.

Great video David, cool response to the challenge! I've really been enjoying your recent video structure by the way. Also, I liked the reinforcing triangles you used, I too am not that fond of splines and that is so simple!

David, you referred to splines as "unsightly". I guess I have always seen them as a neat way to accent a miter. I like to use contrasting wood, such as maple and black walnut. Instead of hiding them, I like to show them off. But that is just me. Great video and great looking project!

like! Pre-heating the glass makes the hot-glue "glue" better. Cause it will spread the glue more before it gets sollid again. Fot the rest, Love this idea of the glass-plate. Thnx!

Maarten Happel Or lay the glass on top of the wet towel. The top stays dry, and can be left on the towel during the glue up. Or use silicone. That stuff bonds to glass like no one's business.

i saw tommy mac make some hidden spline on the inside of the miter. tried that before? might have been hard on your smaller frame but i thought it was an idea that could be brought up. Rough Cut's Tommy Mac builds Spline Miters from Season 3

@MakeSomething

If you live in or near a bigger city you should be able to find a glass & mirror store. And you'll find it's pretty cheap compared to wood. Or you can find an old cabinet or tv stand. I got mine from an old entertainment center that we threw out years ago but kept the glass. Check your local thrift shops.

Not to be overly critical but the glue up at 1:16 seems a little pointless as you are just cutting the numbers out again. The 4 & 1 could have fit on 1 board with the 9 on the other. With the seam going down the edge of the one, it might be a potential weak spot that could open up.

Curious as to what woods you used. I really like the wood you used for the numbers. I'm planning on doing a similar project for my first woodworking project, but with a larger map and just hanging the individual sections to the wall. Designed the numbers, now just have to do some work. i.imgur.com/gJ0llrq.jpg
