The key thing here is consent. Consent is a flexible thing, and even with both of them exchanging the hundreds of emails stating that they want this to happen, if, during the act itself, either of them withdrew consent, then it should have stopped. We have no idea if Sharon continued to consent during the act itself or not.
@ViciousVelociraptor2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Whether it was "consensual" or not homicide, taking the life of another person, is illegal. And since they have evidence that strangulation was not only intentional but planned well in advance I think voluntary manslaughter is the appropriate charge. Either one of them could have changed their minds last minute but it doesn't matter because either way she died.

Even if it was 100% consensual I still don't like the fact that he was capable/okay with taking someones life. If someone came to me and said they wanted to be tortured to death, I couldn't do it. I wouldn’t say THAT. He was the father of psychology for a reason. Many of his ideas were foundational, and a lot of his theories were modified and tweaked by Erikson and Jung, for example, who are also pioneers in psychology. The amount of nuance and humanity you apply to these stories is unreal. I used to listen to a lot of true crime until I had kids, and then I just felt so wrong and even paying attention to this stuff - I think mostly because most stories felt so sterile and detached. You explore darkness with such a tender and sympathetic viewpoint. I also appreciate you taking the time to stop generalizations and encouraging safety. You seem like a really beautiful person, and deserve all the success with the platform that has come your way ❤️

This hits really REALLY *REALLY* close to home. Not only did I grow up in Baltimore, but Sharon's father was actually the cantor of the Pikesville Baltimore Synagogue that my mother & her family attended when my mom was growing up. A sad cultural context comment about Sharon's parents' reaction, speaking from first-hand experience with what happened to my *own* mother having also been cut off by both the family & that *same* Orthodox congratulation (also for marrying a Catholic): The Jewish Orthodox ostracizing of those who marry gentiles outside the Jewish religion is still *far* more common than people realize & it's often a *total* disavowal/disowning of the individual. If it's an Ultra-Orthodox or even particularly rigid Conservative Orthodox community, the family will not only cut off all contact but literally declare the individual who married outside if the region to be "dead" to the family & to the faith community. My mother's Conservative Jewish Orthodox family full-fledged sat Shiva (week long mourning period for deceased loved ones) for my mother & didn't speak to her for more than a decade when she married a Catholic. Part of Sharon's parents' statements that she wasn't their daughter may have been much more complicated than "shame" or embarrassment over the scandal, rooted in the Jewish Orthodox cultural tradition that they'd professed the mindset that *their* daughter had already been "dead to them" from the moment she'd married a Christian 😪
