Although I can agree that you don't need school in order to learn to love and use makeup, in some states you need to have an esthetics or cosmetology licence in order to practice in a salon. It also helps build credibility. Good luck to all freelancers just starting out!

I love your advice and agree with you 100%. It is not as easy as I thought it would be. You have to work really hard to get to where you want to be. But you know what! I don't care. I just discovered my passion for makeup and love the idea of being an independent businesswoman. I can't fail and have to make it work because like you, this makes me happy. Right now, I'm just trying to figure out the business side and it's a lot of work since I didn't finish school; which I regret!!! Anyway, you're so smart and beautiful so keep up the excellent work my dear! And I hope to see all of my aspiring freelancers at the top!

awesome vid and message!! you sound like an awesome person! I'm a makeup artist/hairdresser and I'm currently training as a beauty therapist whilst trying to break out into the freelance world! I have 5/6 years experience hairdressing and a few years experience doing makeup on the side - and I have to say that I still found your videos super helpful and informative!! :D You have a great attitude and drive that shows through your videos. I aim to work for myself too and I want to own my own business in the future - for now I am focusing on getting myself out there as a freelance makeup artist/hairstylist in a new city and it is TOUGH getting yourself out there! I am also a solo mum so stocking my kit back up after almost three years out of the industry, has been really hard as well. I just want to thank you for this vid as it gave me a boost and reminded me why I am doing this and to keep pushing forward! All the best for you and your endevours - I look forward to watching more of you videos! :)Sending love and positive vibes all the way from New Zealand! xxxx

Your story is exactly like mine! I always loved makeup and had a natural talent at it. I never thought of doing it professionally because I did not think it would lead anywhere. I went to college in hopes to getting a job I would love. However I never found my one true passion. I have been working a corporate job but lately I just have not been happy. I should be blessed but I've just been so down about not loving what i'm doing. I've been doing my makeup and realized this makes me happy. I truly enjoy this. I looked up a freelance kit video in hopes to educate myself and then I stumble across your video. This just confirmed that makeup is what I should be doing. I appreciate you sharing your story and all your advice. This really put everything into perspective for me.

And i totally agree with what you said about people becoming a makeup artist for freebies, people think i make videos on youtube to become famous but its honestly just to promote my work and to to get my work out there, and its working! It would be really hard to build a business without social media seeing as its so big at this point in time

A lot of great information but 38 out of 50 states do require you to be either a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist in order to apply makeup, so education is important. Many artist are practicing illegally. Make sure you know your state's regulations.

How do you know how much to charge your clients for certain things? Or how to keep competitive with today's MUA's?
@MakeupbymckennaB
@MakeupbymckennaB 8 жыл бұрын
I did a lot of research looking at other MUA's pricing in my area. Every area is different some areas you could charge a lot and others you can't it really depends. Once I had a general idea of what other MUA's charge in my area I came up with pricing I thought was fair and made sense for my business. You will change your pricing a lot in the beginning because you will learn what clients are willing or not willing to pay. Keep in mind things like how much time your taking out of your day to do the makeup, the products your using, travel time, etc. :)

It's weird, I emailed my state board of cosmetology and they would not give a straight answer. I told them my plan of freelancing in college and they told me that in the state of Ohio freelancing makeup is non existent. like?!? They said that you had to get a license to work in a salon. And then I asked, would I be in violation of the law if I did it in my own house or my clients houses if I was self employed and didn't have a license. They just said I needed to get my license if I was doing it in a salon. Im still confused on what they mean, they were very unhelpful and short with their answers which made me mad. If anyone freelances in Ohio can you please let me know?

I really enjoyed this video, it's so helpful! I plan on attending a makeup school in a few months, cause my biggest dream is to become a makeup artist 😊 I was wondering how often you work, how many people you do makeup on every month and how long it took for you to be able to live off of it? 🎀❤️🎀
@MakeupbymckennaB
@MakeupbymckennaB 8 жыл бұрын
Good luck girl! Right now it's a little slow with the Holidays but September- November I was doing 1-2 weddings a weekend which is usually about 5 or more girls each wedding and some random makeup appointments throughout the week. It will take a lot of time till you can live off of it. I am able to live off it now because when I was working in college I saved all my money to prepare for freelancing for awhile since I know freelancing is not consistent money. It takes time, there may be awhile where you'll have to have another job while freelancing cause some months are busier than others.

If you can find people who will actually pay you for doing their makeup without any sort of certification then I guess you don't need a school. However a professional makeup degree is needed to get jobs in the movie industry, fashion , TV and to be taken seriously.Knowing how to apply makeup on yourself is not all they teach you.There is more to it and the best MUA'S never really finish studying and evolving as an artist.Talent is important, drive, ambition and being organized is also important but so is professional guidance.
