Ah, a new avant garde short film from the maker of "I am NOT your little jester (volume warning)" and "Super Mario death row". For the untrained eye, this may just look like any cooking video, but for the more socially minded and critical thinkers, this reveals itself to be a thoroughly engaging Marxist critique on our modern day! The tone of the film and it's true purpose is revealed from the very start, and even if you didn't know why I'm sure everybody felt it's presence throughout it's runtime. We see a common electric cooking oven, and on it the focus of the shot is the time of 11:18. Notice the pulsating lights, as if the very heart of the machine beats, yet it doesn't know it is merely a tool for someone else in power, to exact his own whims whenever he sees fit. But let's come back to that number 11:18, or should I say 1118! The number 1118 holds significance as it signifies change or transformation. This could be literal as it transforms the unbaked dough, into a delicacy, or as we should all be able to see, the ability to change in the hearts of the common folk, and the hope that we can change the very world and systems around us! After Mason (An embodiment for the bourgeoisie), forces his id based desires onto the common man in order to gain more, the number changes once more, this time to 375. Just as before the number holds meaning; for one thing it shows he is from the U.S.A. a husk of an empire, clinging to the ideas of capitalism, despite it's world being in collapse; this furthers the point of Mason being a bourgeois stand in, and enemy to the workers. Though there is hope in this message, as the number 375 hold a meaning of good luck, this can either be interpreted as luck in the oven (or working class), to continue their daily toil (ie good luck on that), or a sense of luck in the ability to change the current situation, and move into a better world for them in the future, despite the difficulty. This latter meaning holds more weight as we then change the message on the lights, or the beating heart of the workers to 'pre', showing that we are just in the establishing stage of a potential revolution, which may soon occur. Truely a stirring message. We then cut to the counter top, a place above the working class oven, but a place the bourgeoisie still have firm control within. Mason does a flashy hand movement in front of the camera to make sure it's working, a more subtle message of how the bourgeoisie must put on a big show to make sure everybody around them continues to work as they intend them to, yet they truly don't have any power. We then observe him laying out his 'ingredients' on top of this counter. Now for the studiously minded (such as myself), this can correlate to a wealth of valid interpretations; be it the middle class themselves who appear to be beyond their lower class workers, yet still get manipulated for the social elite all the same, the enforcement taking control directly from the upper class to meet their interests and stomp over the lower class, or using the food as a metaphor for an insatiable hunger the aristocracy feels, which they must satiate despite it only being a sometimes food. Whichever way you look at it, this is one of the most thematically rich scenes in the film, maybe in the entirety of film if one was so inclined. I personally believe it to be a very high brow jest, stuffed with a powerful critique of how the bourgeoisie manufacture the illusion of progress for the middle and lower class. The ingredients are being used time and time again for the same base goals, and yet as they are rearranged multiple times to 'improve the framing', really the same things are being shown again and again just with different layouts and packaging in order to misdirect the people away from something of true value. The final scene I would like to look at is the famous 'Draw scene', in which we take the perspective of Mason, as he rummages around a disorganised draw of utensils and instruments in order to craft his latest batch of worldly, Hedonistic, delights, of which he will keep to himself and other 1% people, never giving any back to those who made it in the first place. I believe this shows us how the bourgeoisie think, seeing all their possible means of enforcement as just a jumbled mess, used purely to meet their own needs, and shape the masses to their will. Sadly these instruments will never know that they are merely just another part in the aristocrats process to get what they desire, as they mindlessly push around the other people, their brothers and sisters of the cause, simply to enforce a statuesque which doesn't benefit them in the slightest (unless they are sadists of course). I could go on about the subtle brilliance of each and every scene in this masterpiece, but I believe anyone who is anyone could easily see it all, and perfectly understand the film's deeper meanings. I just hope I could shed some light on what is easily one of the greatest works of political commentary of the 21st century; a crown it is sure to hold for a very long time..
