My first completed Chinese Historical outfit! This five dynasities and ten kingdoms hanfu is made in the vauge manner of Tang and Song dynasty clothing. I used a combination of period appropriate and modern techniques and fabrics for this project. I dont claim to be an expert on Chinese history, Chinese clothing, or Chinese culture. This is just a video about my journey and my thoughts as i explore the dress history of my own heritage.

thank you so much for making and sharing this! It's so good to see historical costuming for something other than the standard european/american ones. And as a person of chinese descent myself, your video reminds me that I should learn more about my history and that of my people.

Thoughts on anti-capitalism, history bias, and racism isn't the commentary I usually expect on a historical sewing video but I really appreciate it.

love the non-western historical clothing and discussion of Chinese history :) I frequently feel really disconnected from my Chinese roots. and since I found your channel five minutes ago it helped me realize I can reconnect through my new hobby, sewing! I'm looking forward to your future videos and (as a suggestion) would find it really helpful if you mentioned or put your resources in the description box so that others (including me haha) can learn more about the topics covered in your video or try sewing their own historical clothing?

I think regardless of the inaccuracy of the fabric choice as you mentioned, you made a very timeless garment. I believe it helps bring into question what the value of wearing and recreating the clothes of our ancestors does for the knowledge and understanding that is gained by making and wearing said garments. I absolutely love this and you are fine sewist. 🤗

What makes this hanfu style of clothing so much more beautiful in the reveal pictures is the historical discussion through the lens of both sides of the coin, that being the culture being overtaken and the person(s) doing the overtaking. In school, I’ve always questioned the view because it was being told/taught from only one biased view, and always wondered why I questioned. Having gained experience from life i often look back at my life and discovered that my questioning was that you can’t take a 2 or 3 or multiple sided thing and discuss it from only one side or lens and believe that whole thing is being described. I often will not accept one’s view on a thing unless they’ve put in the work to not only understand but include another view from someone or something else involved on it. Because it’s that multi-dimensional view that brings the full story into focus!

A lovely outfit that looks wonderful on you! The embroidery peeking out from behind the jacket is so pretty. The whole thing evokes a very feminine/masculine vibe to my mind, with the soft fluidity of the fabric and simple clean lines. And I really like how the utility of the skirt ties becomes decorative with their length and contrast in colour. And omg am I over analysing your work lol. 😜

Would this outfit be made out of silk historically?
@Ora_Lin
@Ora_Lin 2 жыл бұрын
It’s possible yes. My understanding is that linen and other plant fiber materials were used often by people of lower stature because they were much “cheaper”, and in the painting the person wearing this outfit is part of a music ensemble which makes me think they would be somewhere near the middle or slightly lower half of the sociopolitical hierarchy.

huh... that whole bit about colonizers, while making clothing of Han Chinese who colonized Taiwan and killed the natives there. then were conquered by Japan and forced to adopt Japanese culture. it's colonization all the way down

They did not colonized the Taiwan or kill the indigenous people, in fact, they shared dynasty ruling with the tribes of the indigenous people of Taiwan. Netherlands colonizers and Japanese invader at late 19th century, done more damage to the Taiwan, especially for those indigenous people.
