Get to a big lake (Spirit Lake, Okoboji) this spring when the toothy critters are spawning in the shallows. Pike, Musky or giant Largemouth Bass will gobble that thing right up! If you put a blade on the "chin" of the head, it'll do the snake wiggle. Nice job!

This just ended up in my recommendations, most likely because I watch a lot of “hand made” videos. I don’t fish. I know nothing about making lures, but the title intrigued me. I watched, and I was amazed! The amount of artistry and hard work that goes into a lure astounds me. I realize this wasn’t a usual lure by any means, and now I plan on educating myself more about lures so that I am not as ignorant the next time I watch one of your videos. And yes, there will be a next time because a 44 year old woman whose idea of the outdoors is a well tended garden just subscribed. I did it is because your craft is exceptional, and you are far away from a guy “in his garage making lures.” Now I need to go watch older videos and catch up.... 👍

Dude you make so much more than baits... These are tools that our fathers used, not only to teach us to fend for ourselves, but to create lifelong memories with us. Learned how delicate our ecosystem can be with lures. We all can hopefully one day pass these lessons and good times Down to our kids and possibly grandchildren... You create the lures that are passed down through generations as heirlooms. Not the big box store kind that lack quality. The good lures that last, and in time will tell stories and teach lessons. The next time you feel like you “just make bait” you think about that. You’re an artist, and I am greatful that you allow us to watch as you create your masterpieces. Merry Christmas 🎄

Just a few ideas. 1. It’s way too big. The first one you started was a much better scale to work with and fish would be way more likely to hit a juvenile snake. 2. Bind it all with one of the inner strings from a length of 550 paracord and drill a cavity into the tail piece so that you can knot the end then fill in/sand the cavity. The cord is EXTREMELY strong and the knot will make the whole bait strong enough to add hooks down the body. I’d keep the front hook, add one in the middle, and one on the tail. 3. When snakes swim their heads remain stationary while the rest of their body moves and the head is slightly higher than the rest of their body. I’d make the head stand up a little and make a second thick section to put the 90 degree lip and weight on so all the action starts behind the head. Just a few ideas, LOVE your work, keep it up!

@@devmike haha that's hilarious, im a herpetologist. I don't think you could have read me more wrong. And you are incorrect, most boas, pythons, pit vipers, and vipers have elliptical pupils because it suites their method of hunting better. Colubrids and elapids tend to have round pupils because it suites their means of hunting better. There is no correlation between toxicity and pupil shape. I'm late as hell with this comment, and first I'd like to say I love the content ( just recently discovered this channel), but to answer the one question around the 29:45 mark.. no, snakes don't die in the winter. They brumate, which is best described as their metabolism slows to a crawl, so they are simply in a deep relaxing state, but on warm days, even during the winter, they'll come to the entrance of their den and soak up some sunshine. I figured I've learned a lot already from this channel, might as well throw some information your way. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more great videos. The long-eared sunfish is by far my favorite.

You could always try wood burning, I know that when carving feathers into a duck decoy we burn in the fine lines and then paint. The feathers stand out and look great. Nice job on the bait!

You should try agin but, instead of just reeling it in, try to do the “walk the dog” technique. I think it will really help.

i'm not a fisherman nor i'm interested in but i like the way you build a snake with segments that actually look and "act" like a snake and it gives me a few ideas how i could build stuff out of ....stuff thx a lot for sharing this :)
