Ironing creamy white silk would be the EXACT moment my iron would decide to start spitting out brown goo. You're brave!
@updownstate4 жыл бұрын
I never put water my iron. I learned better. To remove brown goo take the iron => outside. Plug it in and fill with white vinegar. Set with fill opening open on highest heat and let it steam. Cool. Turn upside down and let goo run out the fill hole. Repeat until no more goo comes out. When no more goo comes out fill iron with distilled water and iron on high heat on waste fabric to be sure it's all gone. I learned this from my sister, who did put water in her iron. I have a spray bottle to dampen fabric if needed before I press it.

lol same it almost ruined my graduation dress I made, it was a mint green crepe material. I usually have a piece of muslin when ironing the good side but it was a circle cut dress that had a lot of fabric so I was not bothered to use it.

That gown is gorgeous and the addition of the jewels makes it breathtaking. I am sure those painters of the past would be well pleased to see their bejeweled art inspire a real life counterpart centuries later.

It looks beautiful! Great work! Quick boning tip: if you want to avoid having to press boning, flip each bone so the curve is opposite to the previous one when you're sliding them in. The first 3 or 4 will be hard to slide in but as you continue you'll see your work piece flatten itself out as the opposing curves cancel each other out.

When working with pearls, consider using the pearl knot to secure the pearls in place; silk thread is usually used when stringing pearls too. That's what is used with real pearls and will help with the strength.

Sarah Patch good advice. That way if the thread breaks, only one or two pearls will fall off, the rest stay on the thread.

Would you mind doing a quick video showing how all the pieces of the outfit are assembled into the finished look on the dress form? I think I see how it comes together but would be interesting to see how the closures work. It also would be nice to see the gown itself without the additional elements.

I always remember my mom having the same attitude when it would come to the sleeves. She enjoyed the sewing until it came to that part of the process. That most likely why I wore sleeveless clothes when I was young. Sundresses and alike. lol I love the look of the dress. And the work you did on the jeweled additions was really very interesting to watch. Thanks Looking to the headpiece. I watch the cloak video first.

Thank you for the tip about using the zipper foot to sew right beside a bulky area. :) That will come in handy. So will the tip about only rough cutting the layers until they’re all sewn together. I feel like I’ve thought that kind of process through and used that method before, but also that I’ve forgotten and cursed at myself a lot for doing it the other way since then - when I should know better. I’m watching this from the standpoint of craftsmanship appreciation mostly- I can’t imagine I’ll ever have the inclination to take on a project this massive with this variety of skills and techniques required. Because I’m mostly in this for a general overview, I really like your pacing. One thing that would help me though, would be showing pictures of the finished dress in between some of the steps. By the time you were sewing, and then changing your plan for the sleeves, I couldn’t remember what the sleeves looked like. Love your craftsmanship. Love that people are keeping these skills alive.

That is absolutely stunning! I actually like the sleeves the best - they almost look Edwardian. And you look lovely in it. I was wondering about the word "monty", but then I realised it's probably from the French "monté" meaning "mounted" - which would be jewels mounted in a surround? Anyhow, they definitely add the right finishing touch, whether they're a painter's fancy or not. Well done, it's a lovely Christmas gift to us, your viewers! And I wish you a very happy Christmas and New Year in return.

For more durable eyelet may i suggest using a good sharp awl to push the threads aside rather than cutting holes. Occasionally cutting a couple of threads may be necessary but it should be a last resort if, for whatever reason, you need a large hole or have very tightly woven fabric.

@Johanna C - The jewellery is so much more than faux, it's imaginary LOL. Angela mentioned recently that this outfit was inspired by a painting in which similar jewellery was worn. She had seen the jewellery in multiple paintings of the period, so believed that women had worn such pieces then. After buying findings to make costume versions of the jewellery & while doing her research, Angela discovered that the jewellery in the paintings was simply a decorative detail added by the artist & that women did not wear such pieces after all. Angela then decided to add the jewellery anyway for a bit of fun :) Best wishes.
